    Re: Sugden LS21

Implementation of 1/4 wave TLs is much the same, in the two design cases - both appear to be straight, untapered "pipes".

If the column of air is unimpeded by a labyrinth or stuffing, it may...

    Re: Sugden LS21

1/4 wave TL designs require careful placement. Casual layout can emphasize a single room mode to produce "one-note" bass.

Experiments with the similar Definitive Technology designs leave me...

Re: What specs make a speaker full range?

There's the ideal transducer, then there's what can be made today - and the inevitable compromises imposed by materials used.

Re: What specs make a speaker full range?

My definition includes faithful rendering of natural singing voices. That's 100 hz to 5kz.

Most convincing applications of this type need a subwoofer and "helper" tweeter.

Re: Cut out the Preamp and go Direct?

I have a similar setup with an NAD M51.

If the digital volume control is sufficiently "deep" you won't lose resolution if it controls gain.

I've had multiple Preamps (none so fine as mentioned...
  6. Re: What's the hype with Mcintosh amps : how to choose ? and which ones are well rated ?

If this is temporary, keep in mind stronger resale value on MacIntosh tube gear.

I would suggest seeking out a loaner or buying a dedicated amp to run the woofers.

I too, am a convert to...
  7. Re: What's the hype with Mcintosh amps : how to choose ? and which ones are well rated ?

The AP Virgo is a (nominally) 4 ohm load with poor efficiency. Your 845 amp drove them?

    Which output tap worked best?

Have you reached out to the speaker builder to ask this question? The...

Re: My rant on things digital...

My NAD M51 doesn't have this level variance with my music library. I suspect that I gravitate towards recordings with little compression.

Most guilty pleasures of my youth are "pumped up" and...

Re: Whose Lyrics Move You Most?

Jennifer Warnes writes beautifully and has a clear, uninflected singing voice to get her songs across. "Lights of Lousianne"

Re: You can't even text and walk

The largest contributors to distractions resulting in MVAs are the driver's years of experience (younger drivers tend to have less), talking to passengers and eating/drinking behind the wheel.

    Amen, Reverend.

I scarcely believe regulars on that forum actually care for music. It's s constant "This one goes to Eleven.." slog over there.

Re: A good read: CD vs Vinyl

My measured hearing tapers above 12 kHz and still I can hear obvious differences between playback media. The most obvious being dynamics on uncompressed recordings.

Re: Opinions of Quad ESL 57's

    +1 on Kent McCollum's work.

It is my opinion that a pair of rebuilt ESL63 from Kent represent an audiophile "bargain".

I found my set to play best with a Quad 909 amp. I have no doubt that the...

Re: A good read: CD vs Vinyl

The limitations compile with each "gating step" in the recording, and again in playback.

Microphones and loudspeakers induce distortion orders of magnitude greater than either medium mentioned.

Re: This should be fun to watch....

I suspect active monitors, and DSP filtered subs will fill the void. To stay below five figures (let alone six), complete systems must be from larger product runs.

The "youngest" song was written in 1977.

No mention of Maria Schneider, or other contemporary composers?

    Re: Budgeting your system

I spend money on equipment I can't build myself. Current Digital streamers rely on VLSI semiconductors and fine connections I can't see, let alone assemble.

I would say this ratio is reasonable,...
  19. Re: Primer for getting started with networked audio sources / streaming?

I employ a similar solution. I use the BlueSound Vault 2. I did multiple comparisons (all sources through the same DAC) and with the same files and found it easiest to use.

    Not the best...

Re: How to make a $300k speaker

Let's not forget the required loft space, with freight elevator access...these won't fit in your average "man cave".

    Re: what price love?

    Nothing dumb about questioning price.
The real value of things like this is shown at resale, when the replacement model comes out.

Many of the familiar brands began building their products in...

  24. Re: Recently purchased a McIntosh MAC6700... swap to MC8900???

The limiting factor is the source material. If the bitstream is presented digitally, and converted in the integrated amplifier, the last conversion matters.

If the bitstream is converted to...

Re: What are your audio values?
