Recently I heard some really good speakers with some mediocre gear. The speakers were the new Paradigm S8's, with a run of the mill AVR, and they sounded astounding. I couldn't even imagine how great...

If we're talking speakers that I could actually afford, for me, it would have to be Totem Mani-2's. For the brief period I had them on loan from a friend, I will never forget how good them sounded....

Been careful not to turn them up too loud so far. I have probably 50 hours on them so far. Not that I'm keeping track that obsessively.

What are the general thoughts on speaker break-in out there?

I have a new pair of Totem Model-1 Sigs. Totem recommends (I believe) a 300 hour break-in period.

So I decided to quit farting around and step up a bit to something of quality.

Picked up a McIntosh MA6600 integrated.

I tried 3 different speakers with it, it wasn't the speakers. I also tried 2 different DACs, as well as well as all the inputs on the amp. I even tried different IC's.

It was definitely the amp,...

Well, the TEAC was a bit of a fail.

After about 1/2 a week of owning it, it constantly went into protection mode every time I changed a song.

Weird.

Back it went.

So now that I have my new amp situation all squared (TEAC AX-501), it's time to try out some new speakers.

1) Budget is around 1k (new or used), but this can be stretched a bit for the right...

I had a Gungnir awhile back. It was one of those pieces that I left go, then regretted it.

I need to stop doing that.

So I've had the TEAC since Friday and I've managed to put maybe 15 hours on it. I have to say I'm pretty happy with the sound of it. It doesn't at all sound like the few Class D amps that I've owned....
