coffe or wine ; digital or analog
it would be interesting to hear folks' answer to the audiophile version of the age old question: if you had to give one up which would you choose to keep: coffee or wine (caffeine or alcohol)?
> for those having both analog and digital sources -- if you had to give one up, which source would you keep?
just to keep things interesting and on an otherwise level playing field, assume you have the exact same library of titles for each.
also, feel free to answer the coffee or wine question as well.
please note: this is NOT a which is better question. it is simply and effort to discover which source has the highest level of satisfaction and, thereby, commitment.

as i only have a digital source at this time, i will just choose a beverage to keep: coffee -- although not sure it is worth living without either.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
Wow... tough... I like wine but coffee... no way. Plus my main adult beverage is Brandy, so wine would have to go....Dam, I just got back into vinyl, but since I have recently been doing much more headphone listening, and for portable use, etc., I would have to sadly say bye bye to vinyl :P

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
Coffee sucks. This one's easy for me.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
But Jim, you avoided the main question that was asked :D.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
clarification: in the "coffee or wine" question please feel free to substitute your favorite form of "caffeine or alcohol"
-
Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
For me, the convenience of digital (Roon, Tidal, FLAC library, iPad control) outweighs the sonic advantage of analog. The alcohol/caffeine decision is too difficult to answer.

It was the easier of the two questions to answer. :D

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
Get rid of any alcohol, and I will keep my LP's and CD's.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
Though i really enjoy a cup of fresh black coffee I would take wine or the equivalent any day.
Wait, don't some coffee shops serve beer and wine. I won't even need to give up friendly faces. The morning glass of wine would not work out very well though. Well, at least from a productivity stand point.
As for music, I'm digital only.

But can I throw some Bailey’s in my coffee?

To the first question, I would give up coffee. As to the second question, easy, I am digital only already.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
I would give up wine and I would give up digital. The A2D process remains the weak link in the chain for digital and I can’t live without my cup of Joe in the morning.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
twenty years ago the answer would have been simple..... analog / vinyl. But today as I'm cruising towards 70 it's just as simple..... digital. It's gotten better and my hearing has gotten less so.
As for my coffee and my whiskey, don't mess with me on either !

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
For me it's what is more real and that would be digital source and wine

Difficult. Keurig makes a machine now that does cocktails. :celebrate008_2:

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
Have to have the coffee and as much as I love some LP's I've collected over the years, I'd have to keep the digital.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
So, maybe you make a mistake and use Vodka instead of water for coffee sometime.
I have seen these displayed at the local wine & spirits store. They rolled it out with a women trying to do demos. Short skirt, tight top and not many takers for a drink machine sample.
I just think it would be more work to mix a drink in this than the old fashion way. To say nothing of all of the cleaning.

Yeah, pouring bourbon [emoji1634] really does not take anything but effort pulling out a glass, removing the bottle cap and pouring. [emoji16]

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
Easy. Haven't listened to analog since the early 80s. Coffee or wine is different, since I can live without either. However, the music does go better with wine, so I guess coffee has to go. Thank goodness in the real world I can have it all. At least so far.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
About 8 months ago, I gave up both coffee and alcohol about 95% along with losing 20lbs to solve some health issues without drugs. I love a good cup of coffee but know it's bad for the body. I now drink one cup of Decaf Sumatra one day every other weekend. As for alcohol, it is one beer, shot, or share a bottle with my wife 1 to 2 times a week on weekends only. (rare occasions or events excluded)
As to the real question, I was dumb enough to sell or give away all my albums in 1986 or 7 when I bought my first CD Player and CDs. Fast Forward to last fall, my wife made a deal with a woman selling her late husbands gear and after selling most of it after toying with it for a while, I ended up with a Rega P3 for $5. So now I am slowly buying up some old used and some new LPs to replace ones I loved and do not have in digital. As much as I like albums, if I had to choose, I would keep digital only for the convenience and cost/wear factor of Analog.

Id replace coffee with tea, I wouldn't give up wine. If you cant justify having two or more music formats then maybe music really isn't your thing, time to find a new hobby.

I would give up this hobby if vinyl was the only format. There is no way I would fiddle with the hassle and cost of vinyl on a daily basis. Any possible SQ pluses considered.

I am perfectly happy with one format (I haven’t played my SACD player for at least a year). When I listen to music I sit back and listen to it nonstop for hours. I started at 6 PM tonight, and will go to at least midnight. The only time I will get up is to either get a beer, or take a leak.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
Easy if have to choose between coffee and wine , since I rarely drink wine, only on occasion , so it would be the first to go and I'm heavy into both analog and digital , but If i had to choose, i would give up the digital ..
multiple Turntables arms and carts are way more fun :)

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
What? Those coasters aren't for the early morning wine spillage?Hmm, guess Im wine & digital then. I own a coffee shop though, slight disclaimer with a roaster & at least half a tonne of green coffee beans at one time. Don't think I'll run out of coffee anytime soon, virus or not!

I would miss my Whiskey but I need the morning coffee more. I have moved on from Analog sometime ago so Digital for me.

Re: coffe or wine ; digital or analog
as expected, doesn't look like there is clear winner here ... other than [morning] coffee which has a very devoted installed base. the morning stimulant seems to be more important than the evening relaxant.
thus far, digital seems to have an edge in preference with convenience or "gave up analog a long time ago and am not getting involved again" being the motivation. otoh, the vinyl fans here are hard core and seem to be pretty much SQ driven.
