What was the last movie you watched?
Thought I would start a similar ongoing thread here at AS, that we can all reply to about whatever movies we have watched recently, what you thought, and if you recommend others to watch them.
To kick it off, here are a few that I watched over the last few days.
Split - very well done movie about a guy with 23 distinct personalities. One of the personalities kidnaps 3 teenage girls and some of the others try to help or protect the girls. What I didn't realize before watching it, is that it was mostly filmed right here in Philly and the Philly Zoo. McAvoy pulled of the multi personalities in a stunning fashion. Highly recommended.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children - This one started of ok and with a reasonable plot, but after 1.5 hours it just started getting stupid. Maybe one for a younger crowd, even though I generally like these kinds of movies.
Captain Fantastic - This one is highly recommended. Viggo Mortensen plays the father of 6 kids being raised in the Pacific Northwest in the wilderness. They are taught to survive as well as be highly educated by the parents. The mother dies after being in the hospital for a while and the rest of the family heads into real civilization for the first time for the children. Great movie!
The Sea of Trees - This is another excellent movie that takes place in the historic Aokigahara, known as The Sea of Trees, a mysterious dense forest at the base of Japan's Mount Fuji where people go to commit suicide. Matthew McConaughey is not my favorite actor, in light of those awful Lincoln commercials, but he does a great job in this one. After watching the movie, I looked up the history of the forest and lore to find that they put every bit of truth and details into this movie. Very spiritual and highly recommended.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Snowden - Very well done movie and it is NOT science fiction. And don't think for a second that just because it was deemed illegal and they would stop, that it isn't going on every day still. You are all being tracked by your smart phones and ipads. And if you just happen to use the wrong word or combination of words, you, your family, your friends and thier friends are now under total scrutiny.
The guys girlfriend is a saint!
Zootopia - Yeah it's animated but anymore most of the good movies are. Plenty of adult humor and a good message about not stereotyping everyone. Funniest scene is when they go to the DMV and every employee is a Sloth. Funnier yet is that the Sloth they talk to for help is named Flash.
Equals - Don't bother. It seems like every movie they cast Christen Stewart in is worse than the last one. I found myself wanting to toss her a few carrotts thru the whole movie.
The Way - This one is a few years old but I recently watched it again. Martin and Emilio together. Written and produced by Emilio who embarks on the El Camino Pilgrimage in Spain only to get caught in a storm and die one day in. Martin, the father goes to collect the body and decides to stay, get the body cremated, and do the trek carrying the ashes to spread. I loved this the first time I saw it and again this time.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
I go to the movies all the time but seldom watch them at home. Can't remember the last one we watched.
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
In the theater, Split, which is pretty freaky
at home, Hell or High Water - fantastic
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Love my media room optimized for stereo, but doubles as a home theater. We seldom go to the movie theater anymore.
Manchester By The Sea last night. Characters were dark, depressed, angry, conflicted, & aloof. Slow & hard to watch. Immersive acting from Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, & Kyle Chandler.
Hacksaw Ridge Friday night. War scenes hard to watch but incredibly heroic storyline of medic, conscientious objector, and Medal Of Honor recipient Desmond Doss. VG acting from Andrew Garfield, not so much Vince Vaughn.
Hell Or High Water earlier this year. Immersive acting from Jeff Bridges, VG storyline. My favorite 2016 picture so far, although I've only seen 3 of the 2017 Oscar nominees so far.

Fantastic performance from J Phoenix.

Watched Hacksaw Ridge over the weekend. Very good movie.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
'Manchester By The Sea' - 2 hours 18 minutes of dark, angry and sad people. Did not enjoy it and do not recommend it to anyone. Best Actor? You have to be kidding me.
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
The Equalizer. I watched it for the second time yesterday afternoon.

Yes. I expected it to obtain more Academy Awards than it did.

So far on several sites I seem to be one of the only people who found this movie a total bore fest. The only thing i got out of it is how to launder money thru a casino :)

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
This ones from a few years ago, but worth a watch
What we do in the shadows
amusing vampire mockumentary by the guys from Flight of the Conchords
best horror comedy since Shaun of the dead?
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Wife and I watched Masterminds over the weekend. It was quite funny....hard to believe it's based on a true story!
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Where Eagles Dare .....................Clint was but a young lad.
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
The Founder - about McDonalds with Michael Keaton was really good. I would have never guessed it went down like this.
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Arrival - Good movie and I love Amy Adams. It was hard to follow because they kept jumping time, and the bit about seeing into the future was meaningless to the rest of the story.
Lion - This was very well done and kept my attention all the way thru. This was way more worthy of a Best anything award than the winners.
Moonlight - This movie was just OK and in now way should have won or been nominated for Best Picture. It was slow and boring really and I hate when they have to keep using the N word while nobody else is supposed to.
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
oh yeah, and this one
Deepwater Horizon - This was action packed all the way thru and an eye opener to what greed will do. It's a real shame the 3 BP assholes survived.
-
Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Hacksaw Ridge - Wow! What a good movie, good true story, good acting. I suppose those who voted for Moonlight didn't actually watch this one. This was special for both my wife and I. Her dad was a Medic in WWII and my dad was on one of those battleships that was blasting the ridge. My dad never really led on that there was that much and that kind of fighting and carnage.
Highly recommended but at 2:15, they could have cut out just a few of the exploding body scenes.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Sicario with Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro, and Emily Blount
I very much enjoyed this movie - and the scene filmed in night goggles was off the charts harrowing. Somehow missed it upon release.

This was one of my best picture nominees a couple of years ago.

As a disaster movie, this one is more realistic due to its basis on a true story.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
I've just watched "Sully" for the first time, missed it when it came out for some reason! Thought it was nicely done and portrayed, although I don't remember the repercussions at the time...
Couple of days ago I saw a great argentinian movie, in a local latin film festival. The movie is called "Al final del tunel", or "At the end of the tunnel" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5133308/?ref_=nv_sr_1)
I'm a huge fan of argentinian cinema, they take the best of the european school and blend it perfectly with american film making. And this one's no exception, as it's incredibly put together. If you like that kind of crime/suspense movie, it's a must watch! It's from 2016, so it might start showing up on the online services too.
cheers,
alex

Yes, I think it shows the skills of the filmmakers by turning this subject (primarily an investigation to find whose fault) into an engaging movie.

If the unfortunate immoral choice is removed from the screenplay, it would have been a more acceptable Titanic-in-space movie for mainstream audience.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Every once in a while I like some pure fantasy. Same author and many references to Harry Potter, but it's own still the same. Eddy Redmayne plays the lead but may not have been the best choice. (he was much better in The Danish Girl) Effects were good and the story didn't get too whacked out by the end, but it was again just a little too long. Sounded great on the HT with all the effects.
Saturday night some friends wanted to see one we have seen many times, but still an awesome movie. Even better when you have read and understand Swedenborg's Heaven and Hell, which half of the movie is based on.
What Dreams May Come - This movie won awards for special effects way back in 1998 and the painting scenes are still up there with today's cgi. So the story is a little depressing at times, but the overall message is good. This is Robin Williams in one of his most serious roles with a host of other good supporting actors like Cuba Gooding Jr. Again, knowing a little Swedenborg will go a long way understanding the scenes in the second half of this film, but not required. It does need more than one watch by anyone to catch everything tho.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - I love the Harry Potter series so I love this as well. The effects are better than the original Harry Potter movies, as technology improved.
What Dreams May Come - I'm always fascinated by movies in which the protagonist die at the beginning of the movie. Its depiction of the afterlife is unique as well.

I haven't seen it yet, but will once Netflix has it. Looking forward to learning the original meaning of computer. No spoilers, please. What my Computer Science degree accomplished was getting me to correctly spell 'Computor'. :)

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
This morning I watched Safe Haven with Marlene. Chick flick for sure but she enjoyed my company. Now she wants to it watch again in the morning. I stream it from Netflix, but tomorrow she'll be enjoying by herself. Once was enough for me.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Ghost in the Shell (2017) drops the original philosophical exploration of what separates a human from a machine from the 1995 anime masterpiece. Even without the depth, this is still an entertaining sci-fi action movie with great visuals, featuring yet another Hollywood imagination of Hong Kong.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Patriot's Day - This was a well done movie of all the events before, during, and after the Boston Marathon Bombing. Tastefully done as best as could be in light of the horrific events, injuries, and deaths. I do question some of the events in the movie as per the time when they caught the older brother and the younger one got away. I don't recall the news reporting all the extra bombs and the blowing up of 5 or 6 cop cars so I am assuming it was fluff for the movie, or it was blocked from the media. At 2:15 long, it keeps your attention all the way thru.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
Fifty Shades Darker - This is the 2nd installment of the Fifty Shades Trilogy. I happened to like this one better than the first. We now have to wait til next February for Fifty Shades Freed. Dakota Johnson is a very pretty girl and keeps your interest in this film.

I think it might be a better movie if the subplots and the seemingly important supporting characters are given more time to develop.

Re: What was the last movie you watched?
De-Lovely - The Cole Porter story. Quite an interesting look back at his life, his music, and his lovers of both genders. Lots of good music and several other great performers like Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Dianna Krall, Natalie Cole, Elvis Costello, and Kevin Kline played Porter very well. He can sing!
