Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
New construction for my listening room should start in 3 weeks or so. Would like to install some quality receptacles that don't break the bank. I would need about 8 to 10 receptacles so I would like to keep it around the $50.00 each amount. I would love to have the Furutech GTX-D (G) Duplex Copper Receptacles but that would run into a small fortune.

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
Paul,
All outlets are not created equal. Neither is their intended use. Are some of your planned outlets used for more critical applications? Maybe splurge for a couple where the quality might be more important. Others can be swapped out later if you want.

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
Perhaps you can swing a few Furutech receptacles for your stereo equipment. I think it would be well worth the added expense as the power coming into that room is what you'll be listening to.
I'm using the Furutech/GTX-D NCF(R) supplied power via a 100A subpanel with four 20A twisted pair wiring for each audio circuit with the neutral and hot wires wrapped on 2" centers and the ground wire placed parallel in PVC conduit. A white paper presented at the 2010 AES 129th Convention shows this method has the lowest ground voltage induction tested.________________________________

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
That’s a great suggestion. I might splurge for 3 of the better outlets. One for each of my PS Audio BHK Mono’s that will be plugged directly into the outlets and one for my Shunyata Denali v2 that will have some of my source and DAC equipment. The rest will be Hubble outlets for the rest of my equipment.

The Hubbell 5362's are very good outlets if you don't want to splurge on the "big buck" outlets for all ten. Pass & Seymour/Legrand also makes very similar outlet. Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
My favorites of what I've tried:
1) Hubbell 5362 cryo'd and cooked from Take 5 Audio (ironically the cheapest; also the basis for the Shunyata SR-Z1)
2) Audioquest Edison - silver plated
On the fence about:
3) Furutech GTX-D (G) - (In one system I like them (older stock); in my simpler system I tried them twice (2 different outlets) and couldn't believe how veiled they were; the resolution was terrible for delicate sounds)
Duplexes I didn't like:
4) Audience Hidden Treasure - rhodium plated, made by Cardas (if you like fast and dynamic, I've never heard anything like this duplex; it wowed me but I couldn't get past the midrange which I found too lean
5) Furutech GTX-D (R) - like the Audience, rhodium plated and I had the same perception of sound.
I'd love to try the Shunyata Copperconn, however, they're $300 or more.Christian

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
The AES paper:
Ground Loops: The Rest of the Story
Bill Whitlock, AES Fellow and Jamie Fox, P.E.
This paper was presented at the AES 129th Convention, 4-7 November 2010, San Francisco, CA, USA
ABSTRACT
The mechanisms that enable so-called ground loops to cause well-known hum, buzz, and other audio system
noise problems are well known. But what causes power-line related currents to flow in signal cables in the first
place? This paper explains how magnetic induction in ordinary premises AC wiring creates the small voltage
differences normally found among system ground connections, even if “isolated” or “technical” grounding is
used. The theoretical basis is explored, experimental data shown, and an actual case history related. Little
has been written about this “elephant in the room” topic in engineering literature and apparently none in the
context of audio or video systems. It is shown that simply twisting L-N pairs in the premises wiring can
profoundly reduce system noise problems.

So I have it narrowed it down to the 20A Audioquest NRG Edison and the Shunyata CopperConn outlets. I’ll start with 3 for my 2 Channel system. One for each amp and one to plug in my Denali 6000s V2. The rest of the outlets will be Hubbell’s.

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
Never ever cryo a receptacle or breaker, some of the pieces & parts can't tolerate such a low temperature and it will invalidate the required 'UL' rating.

I am interested to have dedicated lines in my listening room, too. I may consider Shunyata, Cardas, Furutech duplex. What wire and guage size would you recommend to run from the duplex to the main breaker panel (approximately 30 ft)?

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
Southwire brand Romex® is the real deal, it's not a generic NM-B (Non- metallic) copy. The three conductors are held in correct alignment.
Bill Whitlock of Jensen Transformers (retired) tested it,and it worked great. There was another test of generic and it didn't.
Plus it's what Hone Depot and Lowe's sells.

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
Hi gang, semi-new guy here. (I joined some years ago, but haven't posted much.)
Poignant thread...
I recently ran a direct line from the panel to my listening room - Southwire 12/3 MC cable and used the better Leviton "industrial heavy duty" 20A outlets - nice, firm grip with a positive "click-in-place" feel when inserting plugs. A very big improvement for my system power - noise floor is significantly lowered and there's a superb enhancement in low-level system resolution. My ears are happy!
I'm considering next the inevitable outlet upgrade, and budget suggests the Sunyata SR-Z1 will be the best option for now. Anybody have experience with these? I know they're the "entry level" sockets from Shunyata, but at $100/ea, they fit the budget better than the other upgrades available. Any feedback is appreciated - thanks!

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
'Don' those better Leviton "industrial heavy duty" 20A outlets, should be more than adequate for decades.

I've been using mine for about 9-10 years now. Unreserved recommendation. Made an notable and audible improvement; your best bet in this price range. Just as importantly, they are also durable with respect to use. Give 'em about 2 days to burn in.
At some point when the budget allows, I'll upgrade to the new CopperCONN outlet.

I appreciate the responses, gents, particularly the long-term use testimonials. These will definitely be on the radar when the motivation strikes.

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
I got the NRG Edison and have been happy with it (reasonably priced, high quality, grips like a vise). Installed on a 20 amp dedicated circuit. Did not do a home comparison. I went this way in part to complement my choice of an AudioQuest Niagara 5000 conditioner and Hurricane PCs.

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
I compared the Edison and the PSAudio’s in the same room, same circuits, same system, and there was no comparison - the PSAudio’s are for sale. Different price points, but no sonic comparison.

I put "hospital grade" 20 amp outlets on the separate circuit for my amps. Bronze (or brass most likely), for sure, the hospital grade makes sure of good connections.

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
Last September I read in a post where somebody bought some kinda voltage meter and just started measuring everything he could get his hands on. Somewhere along his journey he mentioned his findings from measuring a Furutech outlet. Well, I've been using Furutech outlets for about 14 years now. I've had a few other audio-grade outlets prior to the Furutech's but I liked the Furutechs best.
Anyway, upon reading this guy's findings I did a little homework. In the end I purchased 4 fully-cryo'ed Hubbell outlets from Jena Labs. Installed them and after a few days of burn-in, the upgrade was surprisingly quite large. Not surprisingly. Shockingly. And this is no slight against Furutech as they were better than those I've had before that including Oyaide and a few others. Anyway, I actually expected to hear very little or no improvement but what I got was rather significant. Almost like the system had previously been playing on 105v but now it's exactly 120v.
I'm kinda' closed-mined when it comes to enthusiasts buying measuring tools and their findings. But when I read his findings on the outlet in question, something perked up in me to at least do a little investigation. Well, at least I'm trying to be more open-minded."The more I dabble with extreme forms of electrical mgmt and extreme forms of vibration mgmt, the more I’m convinced it’s all just variations of managing mechanical energy. Or was it all just variations of managing electrical energy? No, it’s all just variations of managing mechanical energy. No, wait. It's all just variations of managing electrical energy" -me

Re: Please Recommend a Duplex Receptacle
It falls wholly in line with my signature, near as I can tell. For all I know, maybe 5 years ago such a change would have been minimal if anything.
I actually consider myself fairly open-minded. Just closed-minded about certain sources of info. Like when people run around measuring everything because they have a new toy. I don't trust that many even know what or how to measure, much less sufficiently interpret what they've measured."The more I dabble with extreme forms of electrical mgmt and extreme forms of vibration mgmt, the more I’m convinced it’s all just variations of managing mechanical energy. I also care more about different experiences and different conclusions that leave to not aligned opinions.
When someone says something that looks just right, I think to myself: there must be a reason that makes this person do such assertive and categorical statement. I'll go looking for the reason and most of times i found were the opinion was born.
About the topic: why the "duplex" receptacles? One thing I've noticed is that the outlets should be farther apart. So, for me, a duplex outlet doesn't make sense. But that's what you find most. Singles are much harder to find.
