Thread: Entech Wideband Power Analyzer

I had questions similar to others on the efficacy/limitations of power cords and conditioners so I ordered an Entech wideband power analyzer. It seems to function, but I'm wondering if it's working correctly.

When I plug it into an unfiltered outlet I can only adjust the gain to a max of ~60. When I turn on "noisy" devices (ultrasonic record cleaner, coffee pot, coffee grinder) on the same circuit the noise doesn't change. When I move it to a filtered line with an aftermarket cord the reading drops about 10 points to 50, so the Entech seems to be measuring something. The instructions say you're supposed to adjust gain to 100, and the videos I've watched show the display around 100 and reductions of noise to <1 with filters.

Before I spend a lot of time characterizing things, is there a good way to make sure the device is working properly?

I cannot get it to reach 100. It maxes out at about 60. It does reduce a bit when plugged into a filtered circuit, but not as much as I'd expect. This is why I wonder if it's working correctly.

Is there a "known noise generator" that will definitely drive it above 100? Based on one of Shunyata's videos I tried a paper shredder plugged into a cheap power strip but I still can't get a reading above 60.

Tried outlets next to my fridge, microwave, wine cooler, and freezer. Even tried plugging in and running a vacuum cleaner. Nothing caused the meter to be able to be adjusted above 58. Plugging the meter into my RGPC does show a reduction to 48, so it seems to be doing something, but it does not seem to be working correctly. I have a Shunyata Typhon QR and Triton V2 coming Saturday for demo. I will try it again with them. As an aside I am very impressed with BuysPro on EBay--great customer service!

That's what I'm expecting.

I did call the company I bought it from, but they are not the manufacturer, just a distributor, so they couldn't help other than offering a free replacement.

The one Mauidan has is different than mine. Mine doesn't have the large knob on the left.

Here's a link to videos I put up a couple years ago using it demonstrate the performance of the Shunyata NR V14D power cords on mitigating noise and RF. I set mine to approx. 100 as well, though, as it's noise, there will be some fluctuation as others have mentioned.

Your videos are what convinced me to get one. I have the same Entech model as you. I do not pick up AM radio on mine, though!

I ordered a replacement Entech meter. I'm pretty sure the one I have is FUBAR.
