Someone is asking me...if my XP-10 has selectable gain. Not to my recollection; but I did a little Google-ing, and it looks like some did.

Is it something they stopped (meaning older models have it), or started (meaning newer models)?

The original (early) XP-10 had adjustable gain. I believe you have to push 2 buttons on the front panel to toggle between hi/lo gain.
I had an XP-10 and sent Pass an email, they responded quickly, and explained the procedure. I sold that preamp to a friend, moved up to the XP-20, and now I have the XP-30.

How big of a difference in the sound when going from the XP-20 to the XP-30?

Joe,
Thanks! I read several forums daily, I just don't post often. I have an XA-30.5 that is my winter amp, (I live in Phoenix). I tell any visitors (audiophiles & non-believers) it is the best sounding space heater I've found. It's in my system & on from November until April. My Rowland 625 is in the system & always on the rest of the year...

Bud,
I've owned the Pass Aleph P, X1, XP-10, XP-20, and XP-30. To me, the X1 eclipsed the Aleph, The XP-10 was noticeably better than the X1, and the XP-30 has just more of everything than the XP-20. I'd still consider an XP-20 for my second system, when I move from my current rental house to my next house.

Daniel
