    Guitar suggestions for a newbie...

For all you guitar players out there, I am considering buying a starter guitar. I used to play the piano when I was a kid (took lessons for 4 years but quit at age 13 like an idiot...one of my biggest regrets that I did not continue with it!). I want to get back into playing a musical instrument. Anyhow, I would ideally get back into piano at this point, but finding space for a piano in my current living situation is going to be tough. So I figured the guitar would be a fun instrument to learn (at the tender age of 46! ).

    So a couple of questions:

    1) Any recos for a beginner's acoustic guitar (up to $400...don't want to put too much money into it in case I lose motivation and it ends up being a decorative ornament )? I would prefer a guitar with a warm tonal signature.

    2) Should I consider an Acoustic-Electric guitar to give flexibility of adding a guitar amp (more options to play with tubes ) down the road? If so, what would be a good starter guitar in the Acoustic-Electric category (with same $400 budget)?

    3) what is the consensus on taking lessons with a private instructor vs. trying to learn via various on-line instruction courses? Or even more generically, what are folks' recommendations on how best to learn the instrument (here looking for suggested books, online course recos, or types of instructors to look for, etc...)?

Looking forward to all your suggestions,

    Thanks,

    Cyril

PS: Admin...can you please fix my typo from "syggestions" to "suggestions" in the title of the thread...thx

Depending on your needs, these are great starter guitars. Blueridge. All price ranges. http://www.maurysmusic.com/blueridge_guitars
    Or Guitar Center, Musicians Friend

I recommend get yourself a few months of lessons, this way you start off correctly with no built in issues. Depending on your goals and the type of music you want to play, taking lessons is a great way to start. Find a teacher that will teach you how to play the the music you want to play. Nothing worst that starting with lessons on a classical technique when along you wanted to play rock and roll. Remember we go to teachers to get learn and to get better. You can use a teacher for an extended period or just to pick up some specific skills.

What frustrated me was my teacher would never keep at a song until you knew it from beginning to end. Once you could play a couple of chords from the song, it was time to move on. I never felt like I could play a single song from beginning to end.

Oh, and I could never play bar chords to save my ass. I "got" switching from one open chord to another quick enough to keep time, but never with bar chords as I was just way too damn slow.

Re: Guitar suggestions for a newbie...

Cyril - I got back to playing guitar over a year ago and take 1 hour weekly lessons. I think I still suck, but my teacher says otherwise. You need to work on strengthening your hands and practicing. There are lots of great guitars from lesser known companies for a good price. Acoustic-Electric is a good way to go, but personally, I mostly play acoustic. Lots of Neil Young, Eagles, etc.

Not to hijack this thread, but since guitar guys are looking, this is something new to me. I played a Fretless Rickenbacker Bass years ago which was difficult to learn. But, I never saw a Fretless Guitar or anyone master it.

Check this out, Guthrie Govan from The Aristocrats and other bands.

I think they figured out that some people have a natural ability to play guitar and that I had an unnatural ability to play guitar.

Cyril..Check out Yamaha. You should find something in your price range. The most important thing for a beginner is playability. If it is hard to play, it will be frustrating and easy to give up.

Re: Guitar suggestions for a newbie...

Hey gents...I thought I would update everyone on what I ended up getting. After reading a lot of reviews, ended going with a Yamaha FG730S. A couple of notches up from their entry level FG700S. Has Spruce Sitka solid top and Rosewood sides and back. Some nice mother-of-pearl in-lay tastefully done around the sound hole and few other parts. Sounds quite nice (perhaps not as warm as a mahogany solid guitar would) but still has some warmth to it. At $299 (which is price for guitar only), I got the folks at Guitar Center to match an Amazon bundle which included a hard-body guitar case, guitar stand/tripod, electronic tuner, extra strings, a set of picks and an introductory book/cd/dvd on how to learn to play guitar for an extra $30. So all in all a good deal.

    Here's a pic:

And here's a link to the guitar at Sweetwater.com which has some nice views of the guitar: Yamaha FG730S - Natural | Sweetwater.com

Thanks for all the help and advice. Now the hard part of learning how to play the instrument

Congrats Cyril!! Enjoy!! I've been taking lessons for over a year. Even though we work on songs like Old Man, Stairway to Heaven and the like, I still suck, but I enjoy it. Lack of practice time is my issue. I finally have rock hard calluses on my finger tips, so it doesn't bother me too much to play.

Work on finger strengthening exercises - like chromatic scales - that helps build up the right muscles.

Thanks Mike...will do. And I hear you about developing the calluses as I have started futzing around with it and doing various left hand exercises and the finger tips start hurting 10-20 minutes into it

I am going to do some online courses to start off with to go over basics and then will look into private lessons with an instructor. Thanks again

Mike...I hope so. There is a lot of stuff on YouTube but seems haphazardly organized. But I found a few channels on YouTube with free lessons that go over the basics so I will start there and see how it goes.

Re: Guitar suggestions for a newbie...

Guys...after seeing Kev's mystery new guitar, I thought I would update this thread. I have naturally added to my Yamaha acoustic with a new electric guitar. I was going to go down the road of getting a Fender Strat but fell in love with Paul Reed Smith guitars. Beautifully made guitars and stunning to look at. I ended not getting his US Core line which starts at $3K because I am still in the early stages of learning how to play and won't spend that kind of money on a guitar until I can do it justice, so I went with his SE line which is made in Korea but still to very high exacting standards and at $760 not exactly an entry-level electric guitar, which many can be had in the $200 range. In any case, here are some pics:

I received this baby last week and I have been practicing on it (to call what I do playing is a stretch) non-stop

I bought it from the folks at Sweetwater and I have to say they are absolutely amazing. Great customer service. I must have asked the "sales engineer" assigned to me when I first contacted them a gazillion questions via countless emails and he always got back to me with very thorough and thoughtful answers. Great advice and always looking to tailor the right solution for the customer. Very highly recommended.

Big +1, PRS would be my choice for a solid body electric. My choice for acoustic is Taylor due to its easy playability and nice tone. For archtops, Comins, Buscarino or vintage Gibson. Nice radius on the fretboard ensures that bar chords will be easily played.

    Best of luck,

    Guitar suggestions for a newbie...

I recently saw a nice Telestrat on offer from an English luthier and had it fitted with a Strat maple neck and locking tuners, two DiMarzio Area 51's in neck and middle positions, along with a DiMarzio Area 61 in bridge position. That's now my own custom-made Telestrat, driving it with a Mesa stack.

The inspiration for the Telestrat came from a YouTube video featuring Oleg Plastinkin. I think this guy has his prog-rock figured out or at least it is a good aspirational piece...

Cyril, great choice, I was looking very hard at the PRS range, there is just so much to like about them. But alas, too many of my favourite axe shredders have got me in a tizzy over these. This is my first that I will hot rod myself eventually, but for now, I just need to commit to it & listen to it's secrets & promises & return the love that it deserves. I am very pleased to introduce another passion, Gibson Les Paul Standard.......

The inspiration for the Telestrat came from a YouTube video featuring Oleg Plastinkin. I think this guy has his prog-rock figured out or at least it is a good aspirational piece...

Kuoppis...wow! What a hot rodded Tele. Looks great too. Has more of a Strat style config in terms of the bridge and 3 p'ups. What's the body made of?

Hi Cyril, I think it is spruce with a wax finish to make it look more natural. It is a so called Telestrat, i.e. Tele body with Strat wiring and configuration.

As you noted, these are custom made not available as such from Fender. What comes closest is a Texas Tele with 3 pick up configuration.

Hi there. I took a few lessons with a teacher but that got derailed for various reasons, so ended up purchasing Gibson's Learn and Master the Guitar which is a 20 DVD/4CD instruction course and it's been ok. Each lesson takes about 2-3 weeks to master (at least that's there reco especially if you practice every day, which I end up doing every other day) but it's going. So I have just started chords which is lesson 5 (out of 20 lessons) so still early stages :-)

I am enjoying it and to be honest, I have been distracted from listening to my stereo so that I am only firing it up 1-2x/week

How long have you played Madfloyd? Tell us about and show us your gear

Re: Guitar suggestions for a newbie...

I started playing when I was 14... took lessons for a year or so, played with a few bands in my teens and ended up switching to bass when I was 20 or so.

Not too long afterwards I sort of gave it up... only to take it up again when I was 38 or so. I got back into it serious at that point and started composing and recording.

Now I am off and on. I will go on a kick where I learn favorite lead guitar solos and other times when I try to compose and record.

Here's some pics of my little studio:

Madfloyd...holy moly! What a studio and what a collection of great gear. Do you ever have friends over to play with you or is it mostly playing/composing for yourself?

Hard to beat a Strat as far as electrics to my ear.
Or a good Martin dreadnought acoustic.
I still believe for a first guitar a good nylon string acoustic is the best beginning guitar you can buy. Easy on your fingers, cleaner and easy to fret because of the wider board.
Im down to 2 guitars from a high of over 25. My last 2 standing is my Martin HD28 custom and a Spanish/Italian classical guitar. They both have tone to die for.
I still love pawn shopping for classical guitars. Lots of the early Japanese made Yamaha guitars are gems. I picked up an early nippongakki model for my son for 100 bucks and it could rival my best classical in tone.
