Re: What are you listening to tonight ?

Been listening to a lot of Basie with Ella, Tony, and Frank. Can hardly go wrong with them. Can't get enough of great sounding horn sections on my system. However, I do prefer listening to those artists more when their recordings sound more modern. I prefer the more modern mixes. I don't listen to a lot of mono. I do listen to a lot of bluesy jazz, jazzy blues, bop, and.....bluegrass!!

Re: What are you listening to tonight ?

I like some of the older like 50's & 60's better than modern recordings, in general. Good older recordings seem to separate the horns more, giving each more their own space. Also, sounds like more live in the studio type recording with less manipulation.

Did you see the new Bella Fleck Bluegrass album? I haven' listened to it all the way through, the tracks I did sounded pretty good.

Re: What are you listening to tonight ?

Aaron Parks, I heard him on a playlist and checked out some of his albums, sound is excellent, he is a pianist, some material is traditional acoustic where a later album is more modern. I liked his playing.

I haven't listened to Bela's new recording but I know about it and I will very soon.

Regarding older jazz recordings, I love Basie and his orchestra with just about anyone. Notice I didn't say I don't listen to '50s recordings. I just prefer the '60s recordings, especially the remixed/remastered ones.

Re: What are you listening to tonight ?

Can't seem to get enough Count Basie or anyone who sings with his orchestra...Ella, Frank, Tony, Sarah, Billy, etc. The Count also makes some top notch, top quality, recordings. The horns are usually just killer sounding on a good audio system.

And the acoustic instruments on many bluegrass and acoustic music recordings can also sound stellar. Unfortunately, since bluegrass is the poor stepchild of country music, it can be a bit of a challenge to find high quality bluegrass recordings. Many bluegrass groups/artists don't have the money for top notch studio recordings. So they end up with DIY recordings done in someone's basement. Often not very conducive to high quality recordings.

Take 5 by Dave Brubeck, the high resolution version,it's excellent

Jakson, Johnson, Brown & Company by Milt Jackson

    Mayday by The Warning

Star Crossed by Kacy Musgraves (The CMA wouldn't allow this album to compete, wanted to hear it. Pretty good but didn't save it, I agree it's not Country ) First album of hers I heard, checked out some earlier tracks off other albums, not my thing.

Re: What are you listening to tonight ?

Aaron Copeland: Billie the Kid, Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Andrew Litton.

I am a very infrequent listener to classical, but I enjoy Aaron Copeland. I had a fellow visit last week to hear the Alsyvox Botticelli speakers. I’ve never met anyone as passionate and knowledgable of classical music. He knew symphonic works like I know DSOTM. He’d read comments that I prefer dynamic, powerful, melodic pieces if I have to listen to classical so he prepared his playlist to include a lot of music I might have heard, but had no idea the best performance / conductor/ etc. He could say, for example “listen for the organ, it comes in on the left, just after the piccolo”. It was really a pleasure to listen to classical music for 4.5 hours — easily a record for me. I am going though the playlist again, but this time listening through all movements.

    Drive by Bela Fleck
    Traveler by Jerry Douglas
Skip, Hop and Wobble by Jerry Douglas, Russ Barenberg, Edgar Meyer
No Room for Squares by Hank Mobley (Rudy Van Gelder edition) Interesting to me there are high Res versions of this album, I compared and preferred the Rudy Van Gelder edition at 44.1k. More interesting than just sound quality, the Van Gelder edition the musicians seemed closer and not as spread out on the sound stage, but I preferred the more live sound of the 44.1k, the high res seemed smoothed over for lac of another way to put it. The comparison was from Tidal..
Soul Station by Hank Mobley , same versions available as mentioned above.
