Re: What are you listening to tonight ?
Mellow Madness is the leadoff volume in Blue Note's Original Jam Masters Series compilation series that thematically focuses on guitarist Grant Green's late period with the label, from 1969 to 1972.
Unlike the proceeding two discs, Mellow Madness is a more textured soul-jazz record. Its tunes comes from the same discs as on the latter volumes, but as "Cease the Bombing" by Neal Creque suggests, the spacious side of groove is what's highlighted here.
Drummer Idris Muhammad, bassist Jimmy Lewis, and vibist Willie Bivins all shine on this laid-back shimmering beauty. And Green, in uncharacteristically laid-back fashion, makes every note count.
Likewise, an 11-minute version of Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage," from Grant's Alive! album, takes its time gathering steam and enlists tenorman Claude Bartee, Jr., organist Ronnie Foster and conguero Joseph Armstrong.
But it is the set's closer, a stunning take on Donald Byrd's "Fancy Free" with bassist Wilton Felder, percussion master Hall Bobby Porter, and vibist Gary Coleman that sends it off with authority.
Green's loping lead solo takes its time unfurling its knotty labyrinth while never leaving the groove. As other layers enter and leave, he caps, tags, underscores and extends every other solo in the mix. For the money, this is a great way to re-evaluate the guitarist's mature years.

I will look to see if it is Roon or Qobuz. You are probably right, that it is Roon that is making the choices.

Re: What are you listening to tonight ?
QOBUZ FLAC 44/16
Live in San Francisco 1976
It was serendipity, indeed. In September, 1976, America’s most renowned organist, Virgil Fox, was to play a series of concerts at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. RR’s own ‘Prof.’ Keith Johnson was invited to record everything, and he did, using his legendary hand-built three-channel analogue tape machine. Now, after years of complex negotiations, RR is releasing highlights from these concerts, featuring the mighty music of Johann Sebastian Bach.
Virgil Fox was always controversial. Like Vladimir Horowitz, Fox always gave highly personal interpretations of everything he played, and purists frequently railed at the liberties he took. But unlike many musicians found on organ benches, Fox was never dull. Invariably, he made one hear the music in a new way, and audiences roared their approval as you’ll hear at these live performances.

Re: What are you listening to tonight ?
Recorded with some of the finest string players in her native Australia, this soaring, dramatic set of romantic piano compositions could inspire peace and meditation, but also, as in the case of "Dance of the Penguins," a sense of joyous celebration in the listener. Fiona Joy Hawkins took the instrumental world by (winter) storm when Angel Above My Piano was released, winning the NAR (the international New Age Reporter) Lifestyle Music Award for Best Piano Album, a category that also included legendary solo pianist George Winston. A worthy follow-up to her 2005 debut Portrait of a Waterfall, the collection also came close to the top of the NAR World Radio Charts. "Dance of the Penguins," "Flight of the Albatross," and the moody and contemplative opening track "Crystal Desert" combine to form a sweeping musical travelogue of Hawkins' incredible journey to Antarctica. She later engages in a heartfelt soul search via the orchestration and soaring piano of "Opus for Love," a three-part exploration of "Love for Winter," "Love Forever," and "Love in Spring" which was written in response to the passing of her grandmother. Other key tracks are "Watching the Wind," a reflection of the beauty of her garden and its Japanese maples; and "Thinking of You (Australian Lullaby)," which she composed with her father. Hawkins also includes her interpretation of the Bach piece "Preamble: Partitia No. 5" in deference to her years of classical piano training. In the cynical 2000s, it is hard to say that an album could be divinely inspired. But this spiritually transforming disc makes a strong case for faith in that possibility. I've been listening to this on Qobuz for the past hour or so (and last night). Extremely good I think. SQ is excellent as is the music. Very open, clear and airy, allowing the "space" of the venue to shine through.
Highly recommended if you like Classical music.

I don't do politics but I like Jazz...
New album. Qobuz/Tidal and others.
Jazz music is the perfect metaphor for democracy,” says famed trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. At a time when America—and indeed, the whole world—finds itself at a crossroads, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer has been inspired to write a poignant and buoyant work, The Democracy! Suite, which proves that the joy and beauty of jazz can bring us all closer together.
That new suite is now a digital album from Marsalis and a septet composed of members of the famed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Recorded live in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room during the Covid-19 lockdown, the work is irresistible and irrepressible. Tracks like “Out Amongst the People (For J Bat)” and “Be Present” are an impassioned reflection of turbulent times that find peerless musicians working as a harmonious community, urging us to reflect on the past and reconsider the future. Re: What are you listening to tonight ?
Saw the movie 30 years ago, still relevant. The topic is more pressing today than ever (again), as Biden just re-joined the Paris Climate Accord.

I don’t understand the whole iPhone app to control the amp approach. I like a good old fashioned remote. The new Rogers amp we have in the store is all “app to control it”. No remote. Guess what?...
