I'm considering upgrading to a new turntable and I am stopping in several stores to listen to new turntables - and wow, they sound terrific.

I am wondering - for others who have done this recently, what soundtracks or albums did you hear at the retailers where you shopped? I love listening to the very best of their collections, usually on Master Recordings no doubt. Is there a short list that they all use for these listening debuts?

One of my very favorites so far is the Dire Straits Love Over Gold album.

I'm asking because I figure these shop owners probably know better than anyone the best songs to show off their listening rooms and turntables, and it is those albums that I will next add to my collection.

There countless options as you know. One strategy is to have a selection that shows off various elements of the ‘audiophile’ repertoire. Bass, midrange, highs, smoothness across the frequency range (although that is more a function of the dealers room/setup), male / female vocals, orchestra, tracks with dynamics, etc.

In my experience, it is more or equally important to use tracks that YOU are very familiar with. Then try to choose those that have various traits above. It will give you the best chance of making mental comparisons or emotional connections.

More than equally important, I think it’s vital to hear tracks you’re very familiar with.

Too easy to be wowed by an unfamiliar track curated intentionally for associated gear to sound it’s best.

It’s not reference if it’s not YOUR reference, at least in this context.

auditioning TT's can be dicey. So many variables..........TT itself, tonearm, cartridge, phono-pre not to mention all the ancillary gear that is different from what you currently have and the room !

How much do you plan to spend ? What are you looking for that you feel your Pro-Ject is lacking ? What are your thoughts on cartridges ?

As a side note, nice choice of speakers (Montis) :D

I probably was not totally clear on my initial post..........

I actually posted this thread because I am searching for the perfect audiophile albums to show off my current system. I have searched many threads that were basically titled what is your favorite vinyl, or what is the best song recorded and then I started thinking - if I was in the business of selling $15K turntables and $50K systems and I was the owner of the store I would certainly stock that listening room with the VERY BEST recorded vinyl songs that show off the sound stage. It is my hope that a few new albums emerge from people's experience in these elaborate listening rooms and I will add them to my collection.

Sorry I was not clearer on my initial post.

No worries Neil !

As for favorite Lp's to showcase ones system, I have plenty but one that NEVER fails to impress........

Chuck Mangione - 'Children of Sanchez'

I do like Dire Straits and I must say the very best vinyl song I have heard so far is: PRIVATE INVESTIGATIONS - Dire Straits, Love of Gold album. (45 rpm, Original Master Recording album).

I heard this song being demo'd on a recent test listening and I bought the album. It is absolutely magical.

I've got several others that I love, but I love this music and it really, really shows off fantastic stage imaging.
