The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
Imagine if they had recorded it to 1/2 inch tape - straight analog.
DAT was horrible.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
sad but true ...every time is listen to this recording which is fairly often, i have to cry that is was not put down on analog tape -- truly a great recording but it is just seems to me to be missing a bit of its soul.
however, rest easy as analog productions assures us that there is enough magic in those DATs to warrant a pricey reissue LP:
"Yes, this is a digital recording. True to our company principles, Analogue Productions in almost all cases reissues recordings only where the analog master tape is available. However, there are rare exceptions that whether digitally recorded or otherwise, a recording is so outstanding it's worthy of the highest quality vinyl reissue."

I don't think I have ever heard the tracks but what Margot Timmins vocals were subdued to the point that you had concentrate to hear it. Is it possible that both of the copies of the cd I have are poorly made?

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
i think "Trinity Sessions' goes to show you that the music, the recording approach and care, and many times the simplicity, trumps the format. yes, we wish it was all analog. but the magic of the moment was a bigger part of why this recording has been considered iconic. the single mic, and the church, together, worked. probably the Ambiosonic mic added something of an analog signature that translated to some of what worked. just my view.
in the big picture of all recordings i very much prefer all analog. or at least hearing the most native version. but the music shines through less optimal formats sometimes. there are many examples.
my now 20+ year old 4 disc Classic Records 45rpm version of "Trinity" sounds awesome. not heard the 'AP' version.my system on Audiogon; https://www.audiogon.com/systems/615

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
As much as I love “the trinity sessions” I prefer “Trinity Revisited”. Sure, its nothing like the guerrilla recording of the original, but its a full on professionally recorded re-do adding Natalie Merchant, Vic Chesnut, and Ryan Adams et.al. and its just terrific to play all the way through when I’m in the mood for some sloppy, wet, raunchy, nasty, lusty Rock-n-Roll. YMMV!

I understand the point about originality of the initial issue, but I was bored out of my mind trying to listen to it.
Definitely enjoy the un-original much more.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
Something I think AP and Mofi will need to figure out at some point is where do we go now? I mean ... at some point there aren’t going to be that many analog tapes left to remaster unfortunately and/or the younger generation simply won’t care enough about ‘our’ music to make it worth while any longer. Maybe some truly awesome ‘new’ recordings mastered at a very high level? That might interest the younger generation and maybe even a few of us also. I remember as a teen finding mobile fidelity pressing of what then was at least recent music and snapping those up. I bought quite a few of those and I’m guessing the younger generation might be more interested in higher quality newer releases also. My 20 year old son simply has no interest in most of my recordings but loves Qobuz and Tidal now and looks for the hiRez or Master recordings of music he likes. Hope we have access to high quality new recording for years to come but I think for that to happen we can’t alienate the younger generation and their newer music but rather include them with better recordings of their music. Who knows ... maybe that Spurs more high end audio purchases as well.

with this thread for new context, had a listen last night and was able to better understand the attraction of this album ...for me its the material and especially the interpretation that i like. also, some nice pedal steel playing which is complimentary to the interpretations.
that being said, i have much better produced / engineered / recorded releases in my library -- and, i agree with @kuoppis that if you are not in the mood to hear the record, then it can drone on a bitviking acoustics berlin r mk2 | air tight atc-5 + atm-300r | clearaudio concept + virtuoso v2 MM | t+a dac8 dsd + kanjiroba diy transport + roon rock

Anybody notice the super high noise floor of this recording? It starts the second the music starts playing. I have an LP copy that’s horrible and I don’t think I made it past the first track when I first bought it. I streamed the digital file and it’s horrible too.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
as i said above, the Classic Records 4 disc 45 rpm "Trinity Sessions" set is wonderful sounding to me, a powerful musical experience. it's not the clarity or imaging champ, but it's an enjoyable listen and some of the cuts are demo quality. it's opaque nature plays to the vibe of the whole package of venue and music.
i've played this for many group sessions and it always gets a big amen. my system does synergize with the bass density, space and enhanced ambience.
it does not check every box when i'm in my 'counting nose hairs' mood.......but so what?my system on Audiogon; https://www.audiogon.com/systems/615

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
Well, I went back and listened to the Trinity Revisited yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised that I liked it as much as I did.
That would be with the exception of Sweet Jane, that unfortunately was one of my favorite tracks from the original. I don't know what they were thinking with that beginning of, to me, unlistenable guitar screeching. I'm sure there many people that like it, just not me.
I'm sure I must have listened to the CD when it first came out and expected something much different. So, 12 or 13 years later the second listen I would listen to it more often going forward.Synology 1019D+ - SGC Sonictransporter I9 w Roon/HQ Player- UltraRendu- PBD Stream IF to Playback Designs MPS5 via fiber optic - ARC 40th Anniversary Pre - ARC 610 T's - Martin Logan CLX's - 4 Martin Logan Depth i Subs - Shunyata Hydra, DIY PCOCC interconnects, speaker cables and power cords with Furutech terminations. About the original
I sold mine long time ago. After having Trinity sessions revisited, when and why would i revisit the original?
I must confess i like. I like when the order comes from the chaos, when the music appears from the noise. It´s like a good surprise! Like this beginning

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
You sound like my grandpa! All kidding aside, to an extent I agree. It’s why I say “when I’m in the mood for some sloppy wet raunchy rock’n’roll” because there are a few places with some purposefully distorted, reverb’d guitar work that can be a little much if they were to catch you unawares. But taken as a whole, when the stars are aligned, and I’ve had a couple glasses of wine, its a really fun LP to listen through.
I might play it tonight ;-)

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
only speaking about the Classic Records 4 disc 45rpm version; there are 4 cuts which i liked and played as demos. "Misguided Angel" and 'I'm So Lonesome I could Cry" are two i enjoy and played often. but really the two that became demo tracks are 'Sweet Jane" where i especially enjoyed the authoritative bass line and high hat cymbals toward the end that are so delicate and floating, and the "Postcard Blues" with it's piercing harmonica soaring above everything......on my system with the scale and space it's a memorable musical experience. in certain mind sets it can viewed as a chaotic mess too.
i do enjoy Margo Timmins vocals and style and feel it really fits this music perfectly.
this is late night, dim the lights, adult beverage of your choice.......atmospheric music. visitors seemed to really enjoy these too as they were frequently requested cuts back in the day. great music, not objectively great sonics or a great recording.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
the cut "Mining for Gold" has the faint sound of a ventilation fan whirring in the distance. It makes a click sound every revolution. Back in the day when this record was in heavy rotation it was the 'demo cut' dealers would use. Depending on the resolution of the system it mattered whether you could 'see' the fan or not.
Music by The Sea had an ultra dead sound room Steve McCormack used to evaluate circuit changes, the SQ of wire, caps, etc. We were going back and forth with his disc damper used in his, then best, CDP and the effects were quite noticeable and obvious...And the fan? it was as apparent as Margo's voice.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
Wow. I like the music and I remember going to see The Cowboy Junkies at Guelph University back in the 80’s. But this album recorded to bad early digital isn’t stellar quality. I have a 1959 analog recording that will mop the floor with it.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
All right. I'm going to play a song for you and I want you to see if you can hear the clicking noise the fan makes on every revolution. That sounds like some audiophile nonsense. I can just imagine a room full of audiophiles sitting in a crowded hotel room listening to a demo of a "high resolution" system to see if they can hear a fan clicking. That's even worse than every audio show demo that has a torch jazz singer with a 3 piece jazz ensemble playing sweet, smooth, non-system taxing music.

Never mind 1959 recordings, 1957 was a year of incredible sounding jazz recordings. That's why I can't get lathered up about a horrible sounding 1987 DAT recording that you can listen for the sound of a fan clicking and feel assured you have a great system if you can hear the fan clicking.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
the Junkies were a huge step forward when you consider Amanda McBroom and Radka Toneff records were it around that time. Two other records from that period in heavy rotation: Paul Simons Graceland and Tracy Chapman's eponymous record. The same demo cuts, no matter which dealer, over and over and...the thought of blowing one's brains out came to mind. Thank god for Qobuz.

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
No DAT recorder was ever 24 bit. Tascam briefly made a 20 bit DAT recorder at the tale end of that era, but that was long after The Trinity Sessions.
Regardless of the medium, The Trinity Sessions is nice sounding. A "reference" recording? Maybe not, but if you like the music it's great; if you are luke-warm or less interested in the music, the sound quality alone is probably not good enough for it to entice you to pull the CD or LP off the shelf.Rob

Re: The Truth about The Trinity Sessions
you have to consider they used an Ambisonic Soundfield mic which has a higher intrinsic noise floor than a usual stereo array. Some history here: Rode NT-SF1
The original 1st press Canadian RBCD is the best version of Trinity, the 45 rpm vinyl by Classic Records is less good IMO.
