    Re: Today's Jazz Playlist

I just told Myles that the best sounding LP I bought at Axpona was Miles Davis Bags Groove. If you love jazz and you love vinyl and you love great sounding recordings with great music, run don't walk to your keyboard and order the new QRP remaster of Bags Groove. This is a 1954 mono recording that will have you patting yourself on the back for your innate brilliance at assembling your stereo system. Yes, this is a mono recording, but I promise that if you don't tell your friends, they will have no idea. Oh, and did I mention how damn quiet this LP is? There is no doubt in my mind that QRP is turning out the best LP remasters available on the market now.

    Wntrmute2,

Do you listen to any Jazz that was recorded in the last decade?

This is pretty good and that is from this year.
And the audio quality is on pair with the good ol' stuff.

The room was filled to the brim with audio enthusiasts, the closest listener being just a few feet from the musicians and the microphones.
When the audience is so close to the musicians, a synergy occurs. The audience becomes part of the music making and help spur the musicians on to great heights.
The musicians feeling the empathy from the audience dare to take chances that one rarely hears in a studio recording.
Tony and Bert had not performed together as a duo before, and no rehearsal had taken place prior to the Rhapsody concert, but the music these two masters of improvisation created that sunny afternoon in Rhapsody, is simply breathtaking.

Much of the recorded jazz I care for is from the Bop era. I find the recordings much more minimalist and gets me closer to the artist despite the distance in years. That said, I do go to a number of live performances; the crown jewel is the Detroit Jazz Festival where I have seen stars such as Sonny Rollins, Ahmad Jamal, Wayne Shorter, Randy Weston, Ramsey Lewis, Cyrus Chestnut, Bill Charlap Lou Donaldson, Dave Brubeck and others. So in that sense, yes I listen in the current epoch! I do have a number of new recordings. The Smoke Sessions, The New Standard, Patricia Barber, Three MFs (Branford Marsalis) to name a few but just a few.

    Got any suggestions?

I might be in the minority but I love it no would I sell my box set. Especially the music on Blow Up.

I also have the original and Audio Naute 45 rpm reissues from a couple of years ago.

Interestingly, as my system has improved over the years, so have these and some of the other TBM recordings. Yes, they are studio recordings. Yes, it's close miked. Yes the piano is a Yamaha. But they are still very good.

My copy of the TBM set is the 45 RPM reissue and is the one record set in my collection I would save if I could only save one. It is stunning in the way a beautiful woman is. It makes me weep listening to Midnight Sugar.

I can't believe I have something that you would want and don't already own! I tell you what, send me some of your 'leftover' stereo gear and I will gladly send you my TBM 45 RPM collection.

Love Red Garland, possibly my favorite Jazz pianist (certainly among the top). While many have an individual flair in their sound that represents their personality, Red is a master of subtlety and understatement. Great stuff.

    Jackie McLean Hipnosis

    From AllMusic.com
This valuable and attractive two-LP set from 1978 issued for the first time a couple of sessions by altoistJackie McLean that had been lost in the vaults. The 1962 date is fairly boppish with McLean being teamed with trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Butch Warren and drummer Billy Higgins. The emphasis is on blues and straightahead swinging but even here McLean sounds like he is pushing the boundaries a bit. The later session features McLean, trombonist Grachan Moncur, pianistLamont Johnson, bassist Scotty Holt and Higgins. Despite some soulful moments, the music sounds ten (rather than five) years more advanced and is strongly influenced (but not derivative) of the avant-garde players. Despite being overlooked, the music on both of these dates is up to the high level ofJackie McLean's better-known Blue Note dates and is easily recommended to fans of the innovative altoist.
