    Roon 2.0 update or wait?

I got a email a few days ago about the newest and most exciting Roon 2.0 and today it launched. I updated my iphone app and saw what could be a potential problem for some. My current Roon core computer was on version 1.8 and the iphone could not find the core computer. I went to the core computer and usually it will inform me about a update. But, nothing was showing up. So, I went to the Roon community and saw alarms and frustrations from users. Someone posted a link (below) on what is currently compatible with Roon 2.0

    https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/...owngrade_to_18

I was able to update the Roon core computer and iPad and all seem to work well. At least for me for now.

    Good luck

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

in the past roon has instructed users to first update the iOS app and then the core. perhaps, this is similar sequencing ...otoh, it may also be a bug -- if so,i am sure they will get is sorted.

for major updates, i usually wait a few days in case of issues just in case.

    thanks for the heads up!

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

I only updated the Roon Core based on this.

"Compared to Roon 1.8, the minimum recommended requirements for your Roon Core have changed. Roon 2.0 requires macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later, Windows 10 or later, any version of RoonOS, or any recent Linux release (back to approximately 2014).

If your Core or desktop remote(s) do not meet this minimum specification, they will be unable to run Roon 2.0. If you wish to run Roon 2.0 or later, you will need to update any computers that are below the minimum specification, prior to installing Roon 2.0."

It was a easy but anxious moment.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

Why would anyone that has any computer exposed to the Internet not be running the latest updates, both OS and patches? Seems like an absolutely reasonable requirement seeing that one of the major added functions allows for access to your library remotely (i.e. through the Internet).

not really as it is not possible to upgrade to 2.0 for those with computers below the new minimum requirements. macOS catalina or later as an example. for those in this situation here is a helpful link:

I wasn't addressing people who have gear that can't meet the minimum requirements necessary for the upgrade.

I love Roon but will stick with 1.8. There is nothing in 2.0 that interests me.

Love the new Arc app, have a lot of ripped jazz CDs that are not available on streaming services and can now access my entire Roon library in the car, walking the dog, while cycling, at my son’s place in VT… Also downloaded playlists to my phone to play when there is no internet access. What’s not to like?

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

OP - As one data point, I upgraded today and have zero issues. I haven’t played with ROON Arc yet but will get a chance over the weekend when I am traveling.

Frankly, as long as I have Qobuz available on the road, I could live with out having access to my personally library. There is a high percentage of overlap between them so I don’t suffer.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

for those wishing to stay with version 1.8 you must:

    1. download the roon 1.8 (legacy) app to your phone from the app store
    2. install the legacy version of 1.8 for your core / remote

detailed instructions can be found here: https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/...Roon_18_Legacy

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

I updated to 2.0 last night. IPad and iPhone check. Roon server on the NAS, check. I installed ARC on iPhone and it works well, although I would probably just keep using the Qobuz app for that purpose probably. The ARC app is an iPhone app only, there was not an iPad version.

No adverse issues, I’ll do a closer listen this evening.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

Here is something I'm trying to figure out with Roon 2.0 and my ipad. Usually when I use Roon for Tidal or Qobuz I have to wake up my silent computer before my ipad is able to play Roon. Just now I brought up Roon on the ipad and started a play list. My display shows the Roon input as not active on my TV. Which means it is in sleep mode. But, if Roon 2.0 allows me to access everything while my computer is in sleep mode?! This is huge IMO. Have other people noticed this?

Could this be related to Lampizator's use of NUC as a bridge on their supercomputer unit?
My guess, is probably that NUC Spec\OS is not standing in Roon minimum requirements.

My update went well ...no problems. I did read somewhere that Roon recommends updating your remote app first to 2.0. Than your Core.
That’s what I did, and everything thing went smoothly from there.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

FWIW I also updated to Roon 2.0 on my Intel NUC Roon Core and Roon client devices without any problem. I didn't pay any particular attention to the order of devices, although the first thing I did was click the Update All choice in the notification popup in one of my clients.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

I had no intention of upgrading to 2.0 as I don't listen to music outside of my home (unless it's live) so I have no interest in ARC.

Well I wasn't paying attention and hot the upgrade button on my iPad for the Roon App. After the App updated I was no longer able to access or control Roon until I updated my Core to 2.0.

I then proceeded to update to 2.0 without issue. I just use it without ARC or its app.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

One reason NOT to upgrade. Roon 2.0 will not work without a persistent internet connection. For people like me without good internet connectivity in one of my homes it’s a non-starter. Sure glad I didn’t opt for a lifetime license. I’m also concerned about the open port on my NUC needed to enable ARC. It will be vulnerable to attack. Roon is probably obscure enough that it won’t happen anytime soon, but still a concern.

I don't use Roon (it won't recognize too much of my music) but this property of 2.0 has been the issue for many (and apparently Roon is trying to bury discussion of this on its forums).

In the six years I have been using Roon I can only remember one time it had a problem identifying one of my albums. As far as Roon requiring a internet connection, we haven’t been without internet for years. In fact I cannot remember the last time our internet was unavailable.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

I have a business ISP account (with a much "hardier" infrastructure than consumer accounts), and there are outages several times a year, usually less than 2 hours. Some are scheduled (typically early a.m. hours), some are due to accident. Rural areas and smaller cities around the country fare much worse, especially with a consumer account.

Roon won't recognize untagged files, and there are also some tagging schemes that are (apparently) incompatible. If one has radio broadcast recordings and/or other "unofficial" music Roon won't find them until they are tagged in a way that it recognizes.

Re: Roon 2.0 update or wait?

I went ahead and loaded 2.0 with no issues. We’ll see how it goes with my ISP being less than reliable. I closed the open Roon ARC port and found a dozen other ports open on my PC. Closed most of those. We’ll see what I broke.

ARC does not work for me at this point. I have zero desire to chase down the network protections that are preventing my connection. It’s just not a value add for me.

All internet connections are persistent, can you explain exactly what you mean?

Also, I upgraded last week, no issues, no sound difference.

Late to the topic, but to answer your question, it doesn't sound any different. The guys at Roon even said they didn't touch anything as far as sound is concerned.

As for Roon 2.0, I have everything updated on my Core, laptop, Raspberry Pi4, Android phone, as well as the new Roon Arc app. It all runs flawlessly. Zero issues all around.

I posed that question to a certain member who said he would not upgrade, but he ended up upgrading to 2.0 by accident. It was a hypothetical question to see how stubborn the mule was and not a reflection or question of my personal beliefs of the SQ of 2.0 vs. 1.8.

At our Lake home we use our phones as hotspots and experience significant dropouts and connectivity issues depending mostly on network traffic. The only other internet connectivity options is Century Link ADSL which is a non-starter.
