    Honest opinion only

Yesterday for the first time ever in my entire life I was introduced to this ...

I was very surprised that I've listened to it in its entirety.

Anyway, I like honest opinions only, raw and dead uncensored honest to the point.

    * I'll share more later on, but first I want to be educated because I know less than zero about this band, this guy. ...Music wise.

P.S. You don't have to watch, you can only listen to the music and vocals.
And if you have a high-end hi-fi stereo sound system it might help.
Check a Hi-Res audio streaming radio station.

It's all about the music ...

I think some of his music is catchy and I admit to liking a couple of his songs but that’s probably it. I don’t think it has the staying power of some of the greats.

excellent song Bob. The Weeknd is a very talented dude. I have 4 of his albums.

I just watched the half time superbowl show. Its quite good, however playing snippets of tracks that people don't know is not the best way to be introduced to an artist.

The Weeknd is best streamed or have a listen to the below clips. Luv the 2nd track House of Ballons on how he samples Siousxie & the Banshees Happy House at the beginning.

I like some of his songs, those used in 50 Shades of Gray and Starboy are my favs. I could do without the language but that seems to be synonymous with Pop these days.

I didn't see the half time show but The Weekend is a hot artist that's how he landed the gig.

Hi Shane, I like your frank honesty, plus the education.

Everybody knows that I'm into Opera, and Tango.
I don't mind a bit all types of music, and that's what makes music respectable on many levels...R&B Alternative, R&B Pop / ElectroPop / Synth-Pop included.
    ...The music...the construction...the impact from a high-res audio system.
That's why I mentioned it, without being influenced by the video moving pictures.

Music education is good, music is good for the brain, for the children.
...Classical music and all that Jazz.

    * I like reading other people's opinions, and the education.
    Yes, he's Canadian (Toronto, Ontario).

    Happy Emancipation Day! (August 1st, 2021 - 🇨🇦 Canada)
Now back to Opera (the Weeknd). Listen from a high-res audio streaming music lab.

Stay safe everyone, in Florida too; listen to music...all genres you like.

    Re: Honest opinion only

    Adele seems to enjoy ...

To be totally frank, after giving him plenty of time listening to several tunes; it is simply not my genre.
So I'm in the majority in this case.

I love a million times more Opera music than his music; I'm simply not young enough I guess. It's a way of saying, no comparison.
Pop techno synth manipulated electro style here with his vocals don't do it for me, not much, less than what my vibes can handle. I was curious, he's popular with younger audiences, my first intro was totally new territory, the hit on the strings of the guitar for few seconds got my attention, and after that I was in a de-escalation mode. And if I was looking @ the moving images (I did for the most parts) from the YouTube videos I got lost even further.
But it's about the music first. It is RAP techno soft listening and it just is not my cup of tea.

Thanks to members who honestly said in their own words. Everyone's opinion is valid when it comes to music that moves our personal internal chords. No animals were hurt during the process, cool.

Any further comments from old and/or new (young) members are welcome.

I dig the 80's new-wave pop sound. That would have been a hit in the 80's, too, if you ask me.
I'm not surprised to read he sampled Siouxsie and the Banshees after hearing that because the 80's vibe is real.

After exploring The Weeknd furthermore yesterday, and re-reading comments here; yours rings true in my heart and soul. I want to explore further higher musical grounds; Classical, Jazz, Opera, Tango...International.

I like some Electronica music on occasion, but only occasionally. It moves my but and my guts from the low frequencies (synthesizers, drums, ...), but it doesn't move a single feather of my heart and soul.

Also, a voice going through an electronic chamber to modify it a la Madonna style is not natural and pleasant to my heart and ears. I much prefer Opera voices and Choirs. ...And also beautiful raw Jazz vocals ... I know you know what I mean.

But some Electronic music is cool...a la Brian Eno, Jean-Michel Jarre ... and several others contemporains.

To me The Weeknd is sort of like Soft Listening Rap modified manipulated ... with an accent to sell to the kids in search of an identity in this world of chaos and no direction home.
It is my own personal opinion. I don't blame anyone for their taste and music direction in life; my own had been chaotic by periods. There is not one music style above all others, but Classical music is one I cherish along with Jazz. And we all know the multiple variants of those two music genres.

Last, I like Opera best because it touches my emotions best. It is what it is, my taste.

Joe mentioned "catchy". You can listen to it without the visuals or with the visuals.
It is the late 70s and 80s disco electro, but today with the sound of today for one audience of today.

There are certainly some aspects of that tune and video that I too like, or I wouldn't even started this thread in the first place. It is not for all taste and I completely understand the majority here.
I enjoyed also reading Shane's comment and with full understanding. He has four albums of The Weeknd. Over the years we learned each other's music taste, and with the times from yesteryear and where we are @ today slowly going towards tomorrow...music evolution in each one of us related more or less to our age and life's exposition...bringing up...family, friends, and all.

The Weeknd ... music today that resonate differently in different audiophile's ears and emotions ...

I do try and keep up with modern music and having two daughters just out of their teens keeps me up to date with the more poppy stuff. I like The Weeknd but he is more of a singles artist than full albums and as others have mentioned, there is a lot better electro pop stuff out there, but this discussion was to comment on the Weeknd.

If you can listen to Rufus Dul Sol on hirez or vinyl, you will have a better idea of really good modern electronic music. These guys are unbelievably good.

If you can listen to Rufus Dul Sol on hirez or vinyl, you will have a better idea of really good modern electronic music. These guys are unbelievably good.

You are absolutely correct Shane; it's about The Weeknd.
We can all compare to other bands too; that's very easy.

I started this thread specifically about this singer from The Weeknd. I wanted to know what people here thought. I wanted to know if some will stream the hires of that first tune I posted through their hiend hifi sound system and turn it up. I kind of knew that only few would dare.

    * As for the couple videos that you've just posted above...not my cup of tea, no offense.

There's some music that I enjoy because the fidelity pulls me in, 'The XX' is an example, but the weekend is too far from my preferred genre. and the dude's lips make Steven Tyler look normal.

Pffft… The Weeknd. Music will never be as soulful as it once was in the 80’s
