    Re: Great MQA Finds

Not hearing much about the difference the DAC makes in the sound quality of the MQA folding. Years ago I bought the Meridian Explorer as a nice portable DAC to carry with my laptop and headphones while travelling. Comparing it directly with my super PCM DAC (Pacific Microsonics Model Two), it was great for the price, but was no Model Two. If I can buy the upgrade to the Explorer ($199 currently), will it matter much, say compared to the Berkeley Reference DAC2 with MQA? That is, does the MQA unfolding make the vast majority of the difference, or is the basic DAC crucial in the sound quality?

    I haven't experimented with MQA at all, but I'm not a non-believer.

Larry, I can see how you could be confused. But, the quality of the DAC still matters a lot. If you think about it the other way around, just because a DAC can decode a PCM or DSD file doesn't mean all DAC's sound the same. The other components inside the DAC still matter tremendously as does the method for delivering the files to the DAC (i.e. Aurender or Lumin).

Thanks, Mike. Currently I don't subscribe to Tidal. I was thinking about having it when I travel (normallly about a month or so a year in the UK.) With MQA, the Explorer II, headphones and Tidal, I could have a very nice portable music collection with me, for a cheap price. I'll have to find out whether my other DAC (mch NADAC) is going to have MQA capability, especially with HQP and Roon. That makes my music collection very accessible.

There is a better list that is being maintained on the Meridianunplugged site. Here is the link. Lumin stopped updating when this new list was generated.

I haven't. I stumbled on this MQA album and just love it. I did compare it to the rebook and it was no competition.

    Re: Great MQA Finds

This is cool that there is a thread like this for the MQA fans. Would love to see similar thread for DSD. As a person who is not interested in streaming, and prefers local files, I love the sound of DSD. I currently have 319 DSD albums, and almost anything I find in SACD I can make a DSD version on my server (I buy SACDs specifically to add to my server). And much of it is stuff I want to listen to, Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Donald Fagan, Norah Jones, etc., etc.

For example, the new Lyn Stanley albums are now available in DSD256. Maybe the best sounding albums I have ever heard on my server.

Anyway, congratulations to the MQA fans that are finding some music they love.

I am also listening to quite a bit of stuff on MQA I otherwise might not. A recent example is the MQA CD I bought:

It did not push my buttons as an PCM version before I had the Nyquist. Listened to it again yesterday and quite liked it.

Randy, please feel free to post DSD stuff here as well, at least I don’t mind. I do like DSD as well, is also hi-res like MQA.

Randy just start a new thread in the music forum, GREAT DSD FINDS and post away, I'm sure a lot of us will like your music taste, not to mention I've got a few myself.

This is quite a nice co-incidence: first encountered them in a rather small club-type set-up in Europe maybe a decade ago. And now they’re making it big on Tidal.

The MQA version sounds so much better than the 16/44 version. IMHO

    Re: Great MQA Finds

Greetings All - I'm new around these parts, but not new to audio / music world... Happy to find you all here. I know many of the names from long time lurking in other forums. This thread is great and should be a mile long! Here are a few of my recent MQA favorites. If you have Roon, then I can say the reviews there are pretty much spot on. It's a little mix of genres that should make for a great night of listening. I suggest skipping around to the highlighted songs in the Roon reviews, so that you can quickly digest... If you like what you hear, then listen all the way through when you have the proper time. Cheers

If you like Lucinda Williams her version of Jimi Hendrix "Angel" is, for me maybe the best track she has ever recorded.

Charles Lloyd's "Forest Flower" cuts from his "Forest Flower live at Montreal" album was the songs that hooked me on Jazzz when I was 17.

I have this as redbook and the recording is wonderful.
