first flight to tokyo: the lost 1961 recordings ... audio tranferd from ¼” tape(?)

blue note is putting out this new 2xLP release from art blakey and the jazz messengers, a previously unreleased live recording.

i see from the blue note description that the "Audio was newly transferred from the original ¼” tape reels, and the vinyl edition was mastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed on 180g vinyl at RTI".

just curious if anyone knows exactly what this process is? ...transfer to another tape format? transfer to digital making the LP ADA?

Perhaps if you email BlueNote they will let you know. Doesn’t hurt to try. I’d be curious too.

I would be surprised if you got a reply. I have written many labels before asking for similar information and have rarely heard back.

You are likely correct that the LP is ADA. Grundman likes to work in the digital domain and this recording probably has warts which need fixing.

i received this reply yesterday, so maybe we hear back: "Thanks for reaching out. We are looking into this for you and will be back in touch with an update as soon as possible! Please let us know if you have any further questions or concerns in the meantime."

i agree it is likely ADA. usually, blue note goes out of its way to point out a release is AAA but not in this case.

Re: first flight to tokyo: the lost 1961 recordings ... audio tranferd from ¼” tape(?)

well, it took a while but today i received an answer to this question from blue note support:

"...the upcoming Art Blakey release, the mastering chain on the vinyl edition of Art Blakey’s First Flight to Tokyo was not all-analog."

it would have been nice to get a little more detail on the mastering chain used but at least now they have confirmed what all here suspected: this LP is ADA. as mentioned above, in all likelihood the original 1/4" tape was in such a condition as to require the use of powerful digital editing / correction software.

It is great that they replied. Makes sense that they recorded to tape to a digital workstation and did the editing there.
