Loved this quote from Hunter S. Thompson: “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.”

    Good read!

I like ‘The Bad Plus’ and Ethan Iverson. He didn’t mention live performance as an income stream. That would be an interesting topic. Wonder why streaming service brass aren’t testifying in front of Congress? The CEO of Ticketmaster and LiveNation might give them some pointers.

Re: The End of The Music Business

In the "old" days, musicians tended to use concert tours to promote albums (or singles), and ticket prices were lower partly because of that; the thought was people would go out and buy physical product and partially subsidize the cost of touring. Now of course the opposite is more likely to be true, and Ticketbastard and LiveNation are on hand to make the most of it.

I really wouldn't mind the LP revival if only the record companies released the same masterings in hi-res digital (since almost all are from digital recordings), but that's not where the money is (for them).
