Re: Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any Mediums :

I received this in the mail today--most enjoyable! I hear distinct echos of Shostakovich and Prokofiev, but he also has his own "thing" going on. I own only one other recording of Toch's music, his Cello Sonatas, which I also enjoy, so perhaps I need to investigate more of his music. This is an SACD even though the cover lacks the logo. Excellent sound and performances.

John, do you listen mainly to Classical music?

And mainly from SACDs, or CDs too?

    LPs?

    Big cheers.

Re: Classical Music Only | What You're Listening to Now, Or Very Recently | Any Mediums :

Mostly classical with occasional forays into jazz and classic rock (Hendrix and Deep Purple especially ). Most of my listening is via SACD unless I have a better RBCD version. I own maybe 100 LPs, but I don't listen to them very often.

My goodness, Ms. Grimaud has scored a knockout with this release! This is easily one of the best 1st Concertos that I have heard and a darn fine 2nd, too. A pity that DG doesn't make SACDs anymore, as while this sounds quite good, I can only imagine how much better it would be in m-ch SACD. (Another alternative would be if BIS, Pentatone, or Channel Classics had recorded them with these artists!)

I have no doubt John, some of my favorite classical music is from DG and on CD.

Around 85% from Amazon sellers (very rarely straight from Amazon), and the rest primarily from MDT in the UK or occasionally Acoustic Sounds in the US. I'm also an Amazon seller--Classic CDs is my store name. There are no CD retailers in my town, but I do make occasional trips to Berkeley and SF to shop at Amoeba Music or Rasputin's.

Cool. Possibly my favorite composer...tied with Bach...I think Hadyn discs now equal Bach at home...nearly all of his works that I could find. How do these compare both Fischer or Bruggen? I like Fischer on Haydn earlier symphonies but like Bruggen's later symphonies...

I've only heard the Fischer...the sound on this Ars label is superior--less resonant and more detailed, plus Weil indulges in fewer quirky tempo changes. I just ordered the other volume--I hope they get to the "sturm und drang" middle period symphonies soon, assuming they are recording all of the symphonies.

Thanks! I might have to give those a listen! Have you heard Bruggen London symphonies? I think they're remarkable. Kuijken Paris Symphonies also good IMHO.

Have you heard weil's Durm und strang with Tafelmusic? I have not. Also, presume you've seen that Weil and ARS releases The Creation by Haydn? I have the Harnoncourt...like it but prefer others of Haydn's works...though I admit I have said that before....only to hear another interpretation that opens my eyes and ears to a piece properly. That's what's fun about this.

Judging by the German-only text, which only appears to explain the wonders of SACD audio, this was not released in the US, nor the others in the series. Regardless, the remastering has produced superb results, even if the original mastertape was mostly likely stereo. The performances are masterful, too. Be aware: This disc contains only a m-ch SACD layer and a stereo RBCD layer--no stereo SACD, so you stereo SACD fans won't reap any benefit!

    - This box set is only $162.25* right now at amazon.com | That's only $1.80 per disc!

    * Was $800 when originally released (MSRP).

Yes, it's unique in my experience. There are several others in the series (Eloquence)--mostly recordings from the mid-1970s, so clearly some hocus-pocus was involved to make them multi-channel, but this one certainly sounds fine. The Wagner overture one looks inviting, but I read two terrible reviews regarding its sound quality.

I bet that by not having a solid stereo SACD (pure DSD) layer it must scare the hell out of some purist audiophiles!

John, do you think that eventually they will release hi-res multichannel audio albums (vinyl LPs)?

Was it that much originally ? Wow. Didn't know that.

Hmmm...not sure. Are there quadraphonic phono cartridges?

Simple humor John, just pure humor.

I seem to recall quad LPs back in the day...weren't there quad cartridges for playback?

Yes, quad albums; very bad. And indeed you needed a special cartridge to play them very bad quad albums. ...And also a quad surround sound decoder preamp. ...And of course four mono amps, or two stereo ones.

While I vastly prefer multi-channel SACDs, I must say that this stereo disc sounds superb--very warm and detailed. (For their multi-channel discs, Tacet apparently surrounds the listener with instruments, a technique that ruins it for me: I just want the hall sound in the rear channels.) The booklet goes into quite a bit of details itself about the analog and tube gear used for the recording. The performances are excellent, too, full of vigor and vitality.

Very cool! Will definitely check this one out...I am a big fan of Hanel, Boccherini, Vivaldi and to a lesser extent Corelli...so should be interesting to hear! Thanks!

Easily the best performed and recorded version of "The Ghost" Trio that I have heard.

John, just for fun I'm going to check how much you're going to cost me total this year (2014) on SACDs.

Good stuff! Thanks. I like the Florestan Trio on Hyperion...box set of the Piano Trios. How do they compare?

I haven't heard it. I compared it to the Borodin, Kempf, and Storioni Trio. The Borodin is closest in intensity, but the one on Alba (I guess they don't have a name) has far better sound. The engineer has placed the listener up close and personal, but a large-sounding hall keeps it from sounding claustrophobic. I prefer a fairly close placement overall.

To my ears, the sound on this is nearly perfect: it's close so there's a good sense of presence, but there's still some "air" around the piano, and it's rich and warm--not the least bit clangy. Too bad Triton only makes stereo SACDs these days. Edelmann's playing is sensitive and authoritative.
