Billie Eilish - When we all fall asleep............

Full title is When we all fall asleep where do we go? Billie is the young performer who wears clothing several times to big. I think it has to do with body shaming. I saw her perform on one of the music awards shows. She sang one song accompanied by a pianist. I was impressed.
This album is not the simple and direct rendition I heard. It has distortions, electronic effects and instruments. I have difficulty deciphering lyrics and have not been able to get into it. Disclaimer: I am far from a teenager age wise, but I also am not stuck into one period or genre of music.
I am wondering if other members have listened to this album and what your take is on it.

My daughter plays her music all the time. I don’t get it. I don’t understand what she is saying half the time. Her songs seem very dark and sad. I’m not sure the songs tell much of a story, mostly it’s her bellyaching...oh, and she even has a song called bellyache.

She’s no Joan Baez, Janice Joplin or Joni Mitchell.

Her albums seem well recorded and engineered. I admit to enjoying her music. I tend to gravitate towards melancholic, sort of dark or sad songs. Some of the bass in her music really taxes your system. As far as having staying power in 5-10 years, who knows.

There are YouTube videos of vocal coaches analyzing music. There’s general praise for her vocal control. I probably don’t have the best musical taste but enjoy her music as well as others I care not to admit to loving.

Re: Billie Eilish - When we all fall asleep............

My own opinion: She found a winning financial recipe with her brother to attract the young generation of kids. Do you know how much she get paid? ...
    The Celebrity 100: The World'''s Highest-Paid Celebrities 2020

This is great for her, she's rich. That, nobody can't take that away...she made it.

Her costumes, hair colors, hats, etc. is part of her unique genre she is comfy with for an 18-year old young girl. But she did say that she feel trapped now in that sticker.
As an adult myself she's not my bag appearance wise.

As for the musical talent aspect, the music genre, the grooves, the tempos, rhythms, her voice ... what can move my soul, my heart and brain ... it has zero effect. It is simply not my music genre for my age and musical journey. I'm an Opera and Tango music lover genre...plus Classical, Jazz, Rhythm&Blues, New Age, Calypso, Samba and Flamenco/Gypsy. I also like Cuban music.

That's my own personal opinion. And I love kids of any music generations.

When I was 11-12 I was moved by Blues. That was me back then...1966...the years of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Today is 2020 and kids from say 11 to 16 they are exposed to other music genres than what us were listening to back in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s.

Some of my older friends were listening to traditional folk music from the 30s and 40s. They don't even know Pink Floyd, but they know The Beatles and Bob Dylan though...and Van Morrison too.

The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, John Coltrane ... all part of my music repertoire when I was just a young kid.
You gotta respect the kids ... The WHO.
Leave the kids alone ... Pink Floyd.

Re: Billie Eilish - When we all fall asleep............

WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? is excellent in my opinion, and I really like the melodies and harmonies and how her voice is incorporated into them. The songs are definitely about her emotions and inner thoughts. Her earlier album Don't Smile At Me doesn't have the same type of content and the tracks aren't as richly layered. I would have liked to have seen her perform at Apple.

I didn't mention the lyrics for the simple fact that I cannot hear a word of what she's saying; everything is muffled, indistinct, bury under a veil of low whispers, which where her inspiration came from...ASMR...Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response.

I'm sure you guys have seen those on YouTube, they are the rage for young girls and young boys aged between 9 and 13 (approx).

I hated it at first, and maybe the second third and fourth time but then it started to click and there are definitely a few tween songs on there but I'm starting to become a fan of hers and her brother Finneas.

Re: Billie Eilish - When we all fall asleep............

this is my favorite new pop album in the last few years. play it often. blindly stumbled onto it about 6 months ago on Quboz (24/48.....noticeably superior to the redbook) just surfing and fell in love from the first listen.

i think the dynamics really come alive on my big rig. not as excited to hear it away from my system as the music can sound congested.

then later saw her James Corden video and that really made me a fan.....priceless if you have not seen it.

I own both this album and the EP in digital downloads. I enjoy this album so much that I also purchased the vinyl. I listen to the album in my car frequently and enjoy the vinyl also. I have very little issues understand the lyrics and actually am quite impressed with what this young lady has accomplished. She is also still a teenager which is again very impressive.

Even more impressive is this young lady also suffers from Tourette Syndrome and has learned to live with it to accomplish what she has accomplish already

Which version on vinyl did you buy? I've read so many complaints of bad pressings that I've been chicken to order one.

Hmmmm... I cannot remember exactly where I purchased it. I listened to it last night (after this thread started ). It seems to be reasonably good, not the best I have of course, but definitely a solid pressing. The vinyl is a Melon color (or maybe Cantaloupe).... no idea what they called it.

Maybe I got it from Acoustic Sounds (that is where I get many vinyl albums from)... but they are calling theirs Yellow... I guess this could have been called Yellow.... more off Yellow??? Maybe I got it from a local record shop???

Her live, quarantine, prime time special was really good. It was loose and live from a room in her house, but when she and her brother play, the simple arrangements display their talent, especially her voice. It was just her and her brother with vocals and guitar or piano, mostly.

I can't recall if it was on all the networks or just CBS/ABC/NBC. If it's streaming somewhere, it's worth watching.
