New MSB S500 and M500 Amplifiers

I am looking forward to the arrival of the new MSB S500 Stereo Amplifier and M500 Mono Amplifiers scheduled for this Spring. So I am starting a thread where new information can be posted as it trickles in.

Will these new amps continue with MSB's industrial design used on their previous amps?

    Jim,

No, they will have an entirely new industrial design. A very stylish looking rectangular box.

    Keith,

The MSB M204 monoblocks also have a Class A Input Stage and a Class A/B Output Stage, so this is not a change. The key question would be how many watts each amplifier operates in Class A. I don’t have the answer to this question yet.

Got it. I guess I just always think of them as Class A amps I guess, but really just biased really heavily into Class A. They run hotter than tube amps as well. My friend has a set of the 203s and loves them.

Re: New MSB S500 and M500 Amplifiers

From reviews I've read about their previous generation of "Class A" power amps, in testing they were determined to not maintain their Class A operation at full power but were heavily biased into Class A.

Yes, that’s the basic shape of the amp but with no detail.

Re: New MSB S500 and M500 Amplifiers

I like the looks, although the lack of cooling surface means it will work in much lesser degree in Class A (I reckon 10W is max what can be dessipated) than their previous designs. Which, of course, doesn't mean much as it still may sound better.

I'm affraid the redesign will jack up the price considerably - I'm affraid the monos will be in $60k range. This is sth MSB has been doing in the recent years. Not many of you remember, but M202 used to cost $18k, then when M203 come out (with minimal changes), the price went up +50%, to $28k, then again to $40k or so with M204. So the next stop is probably $60k+ ... which is sad.

    Hi Adam,

The photo was a prototype and the final version will have much larger heat sinks. So I would expect it to be much more heavily biased into Class A than what you’re describing. As for the price, I also would expect it to be heading upwards as the amps are designed to be mated with the Reference and Select DACs.

Ah, I see. They originally had a meter on the prototype but they removed it when they realized through their measurements that it raised the noise floor. They are fanatical about noise suppression. On the photo I had posted of the prototype, all that remained was the circle from the meter. In the circle, was a power and standby button. The final version will have substantially larger heat sinks and the circle from the meter may or may not remain. There could be other changes to the design as well.

It was requested that I remove the prototype photo because it was misleading. In the final design, the heat sinks will be much larger and the remnants of the meter will probably be removed. I will post a photo of the final design as soon as it’s available.

Concerned about its form factor; hopefully the feet will be no deeper than 16" - otherwise it won't fit on the platform in my audio rack...

Is that a fan in upper left under the round cutout?

OMG, I hope not. But I was actually wondering the same thing. It certainly looks like it could be a fan assembly.

    Hi Ken,

Why would you hope not? From the pictures of the Prototype casework there does not appear to be any external heat sinks or venting. Yes that is a mock up in the pics but there may be intent to keep the outer case smooth and homogenous without cut outs? If so, they would need to move heated air out of the interior of the chassis somehow, no?

I spoke with MSB regarding the fan question and here is their response:

“Absolutely not! That is the bracing for each of the two transformers. It will have two massive heatsinks machined here in our shop. Working on those now.”

So a smaller transformer for the input/control section and a big boy for the output...nice!

    Hi King,

You may be right but looking at the photo of the M204 monoblocks from MSB’s website suggests that the two transformers could be identical in size. Maybe one transformer for each channel on the S500 Stereo Amp.

    Hi Ken

The upper transformer looks smaller than the one under it but who knows...time will tell. Sure glade to hear there is no fan!

Re: New MSB S500 and M500 Amplifiers

    Hello Gentleman,
I just joined here to comment in this thread. I own a fully loaded Diamond Dac 4 with the Signature Data Cd 4 transport with separate power supplies. When I bought them I was using the Krell Evolution1 power amps.
Vince convinced me to buy the 203 monoblocks to replace the Krell's. Krell has a reputation for great bass, and the Evolution1 delivered. When I considered the 203 I read up about zero feedback amps.
They sound great, can be hard to keep stable with the bass being alittle tubby. I bought them anyway. They were alittle tubby on the bottom end compared to Krell, but everywhere else; they destroyed the Evolution1.
The next year I upgraded to the 204's and was assured the bass was not tubby any longer. The 204's bottom end is as good as the Krell, maybe better. The resolution from zero feedback amps is astounding.
The 203 and 4 are hybrid amps. Fully Class A input with A/B output stage. I'm under the impression that they don't output Class A at all. They don't run as hot as the Krell's did, but they can heat the room. I love my MSB stuff. A friend tried a panorama of my room, looks interesting. IMG_2574.jpg

Re: New MSB S500 and M500 Amplifiers

Thanks for your input. I've never read any M203 vs M204 comparos. I personally still have the M202, which basicly are the same as M203, but with 100VA smaller transformers. From what I've read, the M204 brought a major topology redesign.

The only downside of those amps is the lowest bass, which is like you said a little bit 'tubey'.

I would love to hear the M204 one day. I'm affraid the M500 will cost over $100.000.

They look pretty good. I like how the industrial design is consistent with their DAC's. Nice job.

They removed the meters because it raised the noise floor. They are obsessive about any extra noise. I like the look too, nice industrial design.
