    * 'Oblivion' I like it too; some scenes are real cool. ...And I love the musical score.
It has some 'Elysium' in it, and some 'Pitch Black', and some 'Prometheus', and some of 'The Book of Eli'.

    Re: What are you watching?

Yes I know, for many people it is not among their favorite flicks.

For me it's the technical aspects that I'm particularly fond of; the three-dimensional (3D) perspective, the pristine crystal clear picture quality, the spatial environment, the infinite darkness of space and highness of silence, the sublime musical score and intelligent distribution of the discrete audio stems associated to their respective channels, the fully enveloping experience.

And that, you cannot take from me, because it's my own personal experience and in this particular case here, the storyline and factual accuracy of real space events in a gravitational world are taking a back seat to the extraordinary technological tour-de-force by a team of cinematic artists working for a visionary director, and that guy I highly respect in his creative art. And it is that acknowledgement and appreciative awareness which is in honor here. ...My own appreciation as an artist who understand the art of cinema in 2014.

So I revisited it, and in 3D of course (the only way to fully appreciate this one, IMHO) :::

Is it perfect, no, but it certainly is perfect enough for me, right in the now. ...And right there along 'Nebraska', another genre of masterpiece, on a human story level, with a unique blend of humor and simple black on white narration.

Honest to gosh, they re doing my house and I am just too tired at the end of the day to post. But in two weeks things should be back to normal.

I did see Notting Hill, with a nodding head. The picture was OKay but far too formulaic for me.

Gravity was a fun movie too!

Barry, still typing on your smartphone.

In two weeks your house is going to look lovely. ...And your posting will resume back to normal.

    * Last night I re-watched this, but in 2D ::

Amy Adams she's in it. ...Many people aren't happy with this film; me I found some' interesting and entertaining in it.
Hey, it is a super hero flick, so all sci-fi, and nothing's real, only our dreams.
...And dreams are often over-the-top, just like 'Man of Steel'; and part of our growing up...Hope. Because hope stands for that big S on his torso.

Tonight in the United States is a national correspondents dinner. Once a year the White House has a big shindig and reporters and comediennes and celebrities are invited. The president actually does about a half an hour of comedy standup. It can get a little silly and inappropriate but it's always a fun thing to watch

    Re: What are you watching?

Touch of Evil is a damn good and compelling movie to watch. It’s not a great movie, but a fascinating one, just as everything Orson Well directed.

This was his last Hollywood movie.

The disc , however is fantastic. First, it has the three versions of the movie. The Theatrical version, The Orson Welles version, created from his notes after the studio re edited the movie and added new scenes, and the “test market” version.

The 40 minutes of bonus movies interviews are some of the best I have seen. Filmed in 2008, 50 years after the movie was created, stars Janet Leigh and Charlton Heston, along with Peter Bogdonovich give great background to the filmmaking.

Welles had seen the studio version of the film and wrote a 58 page memo telling them how to correctly edited the film. That memo is included as a booklet to this movie!

The picture and audio are just fine, but nothing special for this black and white film.

Personally, though, it still doesn’t make complete sense in certain spots, making are viewing important. Again, it’s not a great movie but a compelling one. And the restored opening scene is fantastic.

Last night we watched the documentary about the Flyers in the 70s called The Broad Street Bullies. It chronicles the start of the expansion teams thru the changing of the rules due to the Flyers style of hockey, which was Kick Your Ass AND outscore you. It also covered the details of the game between Russia and the Flyers, where they tried to quit after a few minutes of getting their asses handed to them after beating 3 other US / CA teams.

If you ever wondered where fights in hockey games came from, it was the Broad Street Bullies!

Last night we watched a silly-funny movie called Welcome to the Jungle, with Jon-Claude van Dam. Hilarious Team Building trip to a remote jungle island for a bunch of lame advertising geeks goes Lord of the Flies as van Dam, the leader of the exercise gets mauled by a tiger and the group splits into 2 camps. Lots of fun for a stupid movie, but laughter releases many good hormones into the bloodstream.

    Re: What are you watching?

Auric Goldfinger: There is nothing you can talk to me about that I don't already know.
James Bond: Well, you're forgetting one thing. If I fail to report, 008 replaces me.
Auric Goldfinger: I trust he will be more successful.
James Bond: Well, he knows what I know.
Auric Goldfinger: You know nothing, Mr. Bond.
James Bond: Operation Grand Slam, for instance.
Auric Goldfinger: Two words you may have overheard, which cannot have the slightest significance to you or anyone in your organization.
James Bond: Can you afford to take that chance?
Auric Goldfinger: You are quite right, Mr. Bond. You are worth more to me alive.

There is an important lesson about moviemaking that could be picked up in Goldfinger many times with the Harry Potter movies and even some of the comic book movies fans complain that the movie does not 100% accurately portray the book. Goldfinger is a great example on why they should not be a problem. In the book Goldfinger the bad guys actually want to rob Fort Knox. In a book this will take a couple of pages but in real life it in the movies it would take a very long time to have 100 Trucks drive up get packed and leave with the goal. In the movie Goldfinger decides to blow up Fort Knox which gives an exciting countdown the threat of a nuclear bomb and move the plot along very well. So you really wouldn’t complain about it made a better movie. But I noticed today people complain if they are Harry Potter or even if there James Bond doesn’t look exactly like the one described in the book. Movies are different than books.

I saw it this morning! Still love this movie!

Not quoting the post you are referring to can get confusing. Since many think/thought the flyers were Bullies, they also may have thought them to be Evil.

Last night; first time on Blu ::

Love this flick (directed by Steven Spielberg), and the great majestic musical score. ...For me it is more impactful, emotionally charged, more rewarding, better acted, better cast, better cinematography, better locales, better soundtrack, more immersive sound, better EVERYTHING than 'Twelve Years a Slave' by Steve McQueen.

It was nice to revisit, this time on Blu.

    * A worthy upgrade over my DVD, which was non-anamorphic (1998 - bad) and only Dolby Surround 5.1 (highly compressed).

    Re: What are you watching?

I really enjoyed Barry Lyndon of Blu-Ray. The DVD I had was 3 by 4 and the blu ray was widescreen. I thought this was a wonderful picture.

Last night I saw "BIG" the first time in 20 years. I remembered it fondly, but this was not as good as I thought.85186_large.jpg

    Re: What are you watching?

Big Stanley Kubrick's fan here; got all his flicks. ...I mean 'all of them', except his film essays from his school years.

    * As for 'Barry Lyndon's "true" aspect ratio it's complicated: http://www.highdefdigest.com/blog/ba...-aspect-ratio/

By the way, the DVD is @ 1.66.1 and the Blu is @ 1.78:1 screen aspect ratio.
...The film was shot in the 1.77:1 aspect ratio but was projected (cinema theaters) in the ...

Kubrick, Cameron (James), Spielberg, Lucas, Bay (Michael), Scott (Ridley), Scorsese, Malick (Terrence), Hitchcock, Gilliam (Terry), Friedkin (William), Kurosawa (Akira), Fellini (Federico), Leone (Sergio), Michelangelo (Antonioni), Tornatore (Giuseppe), Bush (George ), etc.; they are all in one aspect ratio or another when it comes to lenses and cameras.
And it varies too from one format to another; theatrical, VHS, Laser Disc, DVD, Blu-ray.

The thing is that all these master "cineastes" don't have full control over all business distribution and art development.

If you want the real stuff simply get the original film pellicule (negatives) where it all started in the first place.
It's the same thing with audio (music); original reel-to-reel tapes. ...Mono, or stereo.
    And good luck!
