OK, I waited patiently to see if anyone else would name it, on my top 3 list for sure......... William Holden

Stalag 17

filmed the year I was born, I guess that's why it was one of my favorites, LOL !

PS - and to think MASH hasn't been named yet, no war movie has ever spawned a longer running TV series. Can you name the two from the movie that made it to the TV series ?

heart wrenching. I'd put 'Salvador' in the same genre of civil war dramas.

It is ('The Killing Fields').

* Revisiting war movies from memory is quite an emotional ride.
War is not fun, killing other human beings is not civilized, exploiting other human beings is despicable, using other human beings is like enslaving them physically or psychologically or both, and it's not good form. War sucks, hatred sucks, violence sucks, human exploitation sucks, racism sucks, corruption sucks, power by evil sucks, dictators suck.

Saving Private Ryan is one of the top best War movies. ...Apocalypse Now Redux also. Then all hell breaks loose with zillion of bullets, guns, blood and guts all over the movie sets...Black Hawk Down, 13 Soldiers, ...

** On another thread; Best Favorite Love story (Romance) movie ...

Gone with the Wind also ranks among the top epic war movies.

And Dr. Strangelove.

* Stanley Kubrick ranks among the top film directors when it comes to war movies.
...With a different take; Dr. Strangelove, Full Metal Jacket, Paths of Glory, Fear and Desire, Spartacus, Barry Lyndon.

** Kathryn Bigelow (James Cameron's ex-wife) also ranks high as a director of powerful war movies; The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty, K-19: The Widowmaker.

My favorite is probably Das Boot. In addition I enjoyed the first two of Spielberg's Trilogy "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific" and have been looking forward to the third installment sometime called "Masters of the Air" or "The Mighty Eighth" currently in production which is about the air war in Europe.

Others have posted some excellent ones such as Saving Private Ryan, Midway (original), We Were Soldiers, Flags of our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima. There are a few that are great but hard to re-watch like Schindler's List and The Book Thief.

Funny but I never liked Patton.

My two favorites are:

Battle of the Bulge (1965)
The Bridge at Remagen (1969)

They may not be the best of the bunch that others have mentioned, but they are to me for very personal reasons. My grandfather, who passed away in 2016 at the age of 95, fought in both of those battles.
