First review of new ModWright PH150 reference tube phono stage

Have heard this phono, very smooth indeed, great soundstage and separation, and ultra quiet on the 100dB+ speakers being played!

I had the opportunity to listen to the PH 150 vs the Soulution 725 w built in phono stage courtesy of a local Chicago dealer. Was not expecting much from this outboard unit. Was pleasantly surprised. This tubed phono with separate power supply gave the onboard heralded 725 phono a real run for the money. With certain re-issues of Blue Note recordings it seemed to sound better. e.g. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers 180 gram re-issue of the 1958 recording of Moanin'. I thought i could hear deeper into the music. Like it was recorded yesterday. Astounding.

I own one and it is perfect for what I need in a phono stage. It sounds great but at this price it better! I'm sure you might even find a phono stage that sounds just as good for a little less coin, but not one that sounds this good and is as versatile. I own four high end carts that each require different settings. Because I own the PH150, a VPI with on the fly VTA, and four VPI wands, accurately switching carts literally takes less than a minute!
