The store is located in La Jolla, a beachside area of San Diego, in a 2200 square foot house. With 6 individual listening environments, the idea is to offer an enjoyable music experience to audiophiles and newcomers alike.

Some of the lines/products we carry include: YG Acoustics, Avantgarde Acoustics, MSB Technologies, Kubala-Sosna, darTZeel, Evolution Acoustics, Kronos, Ortofon, Auralic, Hegel, Audionet, Solid Steel, iFi, Music Hall, among others. Other lines will be added in the following months.

An integral part of the store, the vinyl records section will have, on average, 2000 records, covering a variety of styles and genres, both old and new.

Alma will also distribute Audiopax in the US. The brazilian brand has gained quite a following years ago, and now it’s back with new and exciting products, and with US presence to boot.

Alexandre, congrats and wish you much luck on your new venture!

Very interested in the part of the 'highly curated selection of vinyl records'. Will the store have a website to sell these records?

    Congrats again!

    Re: Audio Dealers

    Jim,

On the distribution front, no. We're the sole distributor. I understand Silvio (the head of Audiopax) has some local help in the San Francisco area, but I don't know everybody there, so maybe John is involved in that aspect.
We're signing up dealers at this point, so John is welcome to get back onboard, if he's reading this
As a side note, we're dealers for Avantgarde, and we'll have a dedicated room for the pairing (Audiopax+Avantgarde)! We're waiting for the first batch of Audiopax gear, but once it's here, I'll post pics!

    Allen,

Unfortunately, no. Actually our purpose is to bring the joy of record shopping back, with quality LPs that you hardly see in physical stores anymore, since the store owners just list everything up on eBay and don't even put them on the shelves anymore...
But if you have any specific wants, for both old or new LPs, please let me know and I'll keep an eye out for them for you! We're all crazy LP collectors here, and we're always digging for gold

    Thanks,
    Alex

Alexandre...congrats on Alma Music and Audio's launch and good luck with the new venture. Are you going to stick with the FB page as the primary on-line access point or will there be an Alma Music and Audio separate website setup to showcase the store/rooms etc...?

    cmalak,

We're working on the website. We've hired a professional photographer to shoot the different rooms/environments, but since we haven't finalised the rooms (still waiting for gear...), we're a little behind with the website...

If you all don't mind amateur iPhone pics, I'll post some up in a bit

Sounds like a good operating model. My local record store (Princeton Record Exchange) is doing pretty well and thus far they have also avoided the internet trap and rely solely on customers coming in and thumbing through their selections. They are doing pretty well given the crowds I see every time I'm there.

Alex, I will PM you a short list. I recently got into vinyl and can't get enough of the good stuff!

    cheers!

    Re: Audio Dealers

Our company is the exclusive distributor for a few brands here in the Philippines. While I first got into this to help fund an expensive hobby, exposure to new people and their music has been quite the wonderful and unexpected reward. Other bonuses are the excuse to travel to various shows around the world as well as factory visits where so much insight can be gleaned from direct interaction with the manufacturers.

While these days my personal systems are made up of mostly products made by companies we represent, this has been fairly recent. There are many brands that I owned that I still love, respect and have no hesitation to recommend.

Our main business is a Media conglomerate. We are partners in a publicly listed TV and Radio Network. Wholly and partially owned subsidiaries include a TV Commercial production house, a record label, a Post Production/Film Lab and Massive Multiplayer Gaming. My personal experience includes Recording Engineering, Audio Editing for Film and TV, Design and Construction of Critical Listening Environments. I took specialist courses at Full Sail in Orlando Florida a decade and a half ago as part of the process that built the equipment and workflow roadmap for our migration from analog to digital. Acquisition to broadcast. A career detour (drafted into Politics where I served as a Legislator) had me leaving the industry just as I was starting (prior to that I was in Brand Management) and at that time I needed to channel my passion for sound elsewhere. That led me to high end audio's deep, deep end. LOL. Online I am a moderator on two other audio forums. Forums are like clubs. Each one has its own vibe and I appreciate what vibe each one has.

I will create my signature shortly.

What a great story, Jack, thanks for sharing! Love the broad background in media, in particular recording engineering. Anything any of us would have heard here in the states?

    Thanks, guys...

As Jack put it, it is indeed great to expose people to new music (through the record store side of the business), and also to quality music reproduction. Just in this brief period that we've been opened, there's been a few eyes opened by the possibilities of a better turntable, an actual phono stage, dedicated DACs, etc. If I could get a handful of folks off the Crosley boat, I'm happy

The Newport Beach show is coming up, and we'll have 3 rooms there, but it's also a good oportunity to come down and visit the store! We're about 1:15 away from the Hotel Irvine.

    thanks,
    alex

Ummm....Princeton is really a shell of its old self though ones reaction will depend on musical genre to a certain extent. Classical. Forget it. Gone for all intents and purposes. Jazz selection is ok, rock is a little better. Occasionally one finds something in the new arrivals bins. Truth is Princeton is known to put stuff aside for certain customers though unlike other stores, doesn't seem heavily wedded to selling on ePay. Also the condition of the LPs ain't what it used to be.

Too bad because have a lot of fond memories of Princeton dating back to when the store was located on Tulane St. At that time, Princeton had boxes of Mercury classical discs by the checkout counter for reasonable prices that they couldn't give away. Then came TAS and the prices went through the roof.

Been to a few record stores across the country (and world) and the best current store that I've come across is Twist and Shout Records in Denver. If you go to RMAF, the store is about a $25 cab ride from the hotel. The best US store of all time (and sadly long gone) for used records was G&A records in NYC; for new records, the award goes to Discophile Records located in Greenwich Village in NYC. (Aclose second was Tower Records when they actually had vinyl). Both were fantastic stores to go shopping in and as my ex used to say, pack a toothbrush!

Now back to regularly scheduled programming!

Myles, I've never been to Prex in its heyday, but what I see there today suits me just fine (vinyl newbie). The classical section is de minimis, but I've been able to pick up some NM- Shaded Dogs, London Bluebacks, Lyrita, RR, Wilson Audiophile titles, etc. Their Jazz section is growing, as well as their Techno/Electronica section. Out of the local places I've been to, it's the best of the bunch thus far!

Thanks for the recommendations on the other retailers. Will check them out when I can.

Twist and Shout is a great store. Been a customer since the late 80's when they were in the old building across from ListenUP on Exposition Street. Paul Epstein (owner) has deep roots in his vinyl love and just keeps growing and honing his business which is great for his (us) customers.

tip: If taking a cab from RMAF or elsewhere in town, take your cell phone and the cab company phone number and call them for a return fare/trip several hours later.

Agree with Myles about Twist and Shout. We actually met there one time during RMAF, remember? HUGE store, almost Amoeba-size, great selection too.
As for PREX, is it not on S Tulane St. anymore? I haven't been there in about a year...

    Hi Everyone,
This forum somehow managed to exist without me knowing about it. I stumbled upon it last night and am so glad I did. I love the friendly vibe here. I work for a audio dealer in NY and it's great to see so many industry people and hobbyist's commingling in such perfect fashion. Thank you to the owners of this forum for encouraging dealers and industry people to openly participate in the conversation. I am very lucky to spend my day's working with audio enthusiasts and all the great equipment we represent. My evenings are spent.....well....playing with audio equipment . I have a pretty modest system at home that I get great enjoyment from. This year I plan to do a lot of upgrading, starting with the monumental task of cleaning my basement and building a dedicated listening room. I am looking forward to joining the conversations and getting to know everyone here at Audioshark.
I will put my affiliations in My signature ASAP.

So I go to the "Forum Rules" page and this is the first thing I see:

"If you are retailer or manufacturer, you are encouraged to promote your business."

Mike, you had me at hello.

It is really nice to not start out as a second-class citizen, assumed to be deceptive and/or incompetent.

I only build and/or sell stuff that I believe in, and respect anyone else in this industry who is doing the same, and frankly don't think there's anyone left in this industry who isn't.

For many years I was an amateur speaker builder, then bought a pair of Sound Labs and loved 'em so much I became a dealer. About a decade ago I returned to my roots and started designing commercial speakers of my own, having had the good fortune of working with Earl Geddes on the speaker that emerged as his Summa.

During the Great Recession when sales of expensive toys plummeted, I started building bass guitar cabinets, on the theory that there's still a market for a decent "tool of the trade" even in hard times. Bass players got me through it, and I continue to build bass cabinets today.

I consider myself very fortunate to participate in this industry.

Welcome Duke...I am not super familiar with your Audiokinesis speakers, except that they tend to be very tube-friendly, presenting an easy load to the partnering amp with a benign impedance curve and are usually designs of high sensitivity, so SET amps are welcome. Tell us more about your speaker design philosophies.

Tell us more about your speaker design philosophies.
Thank you, Cyril! Yes my speakers tend to be tube-friendly, and quite a few people use them with specialty tube amps like SETs and OTLs. But they'll work just fine with solid state as well, either high or low power.

My speaker design philosophy is, amp + speaker + room = a system within a system, and don't forget that the target audience is a pair of ears rather than a set of test equipment. Recreating the acoustic event on the recording is an unrealistic goal, but recreating (or at least closely approximating) the perception of that event is arguably a realistic goal.

I do indeed shoot for a smooth and benign impedance curve, which works well with both low-damping-factor tube amps and high-damping-factor solid state amps. Inevitably we still have some impedance peaks in the bass region, so the enclosures are vented boxes with pluggable ports, with vented mode being more likely to work well with solid state and either low-tuned vented mode (more than one tuning frequency is possible) or sealed box mode usually working best for tube amps.

As for the speaker/room interface, I give a high priority to the off-axis sound being free from significant glitches and anomalies, so whatever reflections the room contributes are likely to be beneficial rather than detrimental (slap echo excluded). Two regions where room acoustics vary a great deal are the bass and the high treble, and the above-mentioned box tuning flexibility often helps with getting good results in the bass region. For the high treble, I include a "tilt" control in the form of a single high-quality resistor in a terminal cup on the back of the cabinet. This is a much higher quality solution than most L-pads, and because it's a tilt instead of a level control, it does a better job of addressing a room that's too bright or too dull without messing up the lower treble region.

As for taking human hearing into account, that's where it gets fun. When Floyd Toole listed the five measurements that were good predictors of subjective preference, four of them are heavily influenced by the off-axis energy. I believe that getting the reverberant field right (and the reverberant field is dominated by the off-axis energy) is critical to rich timbre and long-term fatigue free listening, so some of my designs have additional drivers, or arrays of drivers, dedicated to the reverberant field. This will not look good to a measurement microphone, but I believe it more closely approximates the "feel" of being present at a live performance.

I like the idea of a speaker that gives you a great deal of latitude as far as listening position, such that the presentation holds up well even for listeners well outside the "sweet spot". This results in some rather unorthodox design choices and setup recommendations, which I can go into if you'd like.

My speakers usually have good dynamic characteristics, though this is more a by-product of my choice to use prosound-style drivers than a deliberate goal. I use these drivers primarily for their radiation pattern characteristics. The downside of prosound drivers is that they tend to be less smooth than high-end home audio drivers, so I'm picky about the ones I use and beat them into submission (via the crossover) when necessary.

In the subwoofer region, imo the biggest problem is the room, which inevitably imposes a severe peak-and-dip pattern on the subwoofer's output, no matter how smooth it starts out. The solution I embrace is a distributed multisub system where we scatter four small subwoofers around the room. Each produces a different peak-and-dip pattern, and the sum of these dissimilar peak-and-dip patterns will be far smoother than any one alone. Credit to Earl Geddes for the idea. I'm currently in the process of revising my "satellite" speakers intended to be paired up with my "Swarm" multisub system.

So I like to think my speakers are more room-friendly than most, in addition to being arguably more amp-friendly than most. Of course what would be really nice is if they're more ears-friendly than most!

I have not mastered the art of high wife acceptance factor, which probably dooms me to being a niche market manufacturer. Well, there are worse fates!

Feel free to question me about any of this.

Duke...thanks for detailing your primary design principles. For those of you who may not be familiar with Mr. Lejeune's speakers, here is a link to his web site: Home

Duke...I seem to recall you were primarily a direct seller but reading on your website it seems like you are selling through dealers for some models, can you walk through your sales model and why the hybrid approach. Also, can you list who your primary dealers are as I did not find a list on your web site. Thx

I've been selling my own brand direct since 2006, and for most of that time one dealer in particular has let me know repeatedly that he'd like to sell my speakers. Up until recently I haven't been confident of having something that would be competitive with dealer markup factored in, but that recently changed, with the incorporation of Jim Romeyn's "Late Ceiling Splash" technology into a couple of my designs. So the time had finally come.

That persistently encouraging dealer is Brian Walsh of Essential Audio, and my other dealers are Tony Chipelo of Electra-Fidelity and Jim Romeyn of James Romeyn Music and Audio, LLC. I'm not allowed to post links yet, too much of a newbie here still.

That being said, my website is due for some updating. My wife does the website and we've both been swamped lately but it'll get done soon.

Right now the Zephrin and Dream Maker LCS systems are sold through dealers. I plan to replace the Prisma with a through-dealers-only updated version, and add a stand-mount as well.

The Swarm multisub system will continue to be sold direct only, as I think it would be counter-productive to raise the price to accommodate dealer markup.
