I am a huge Ayon fan, and my Ayon CD player is switchable between PCM and DSD. This is a big deal as you can A/B them back-to-back. Almost all of my cd's sound a bit better with DSD. Smoother overall, but the midrange is where DSD really shines. And if the midrange isn't right, nothing else...
For a solid state amp in that power range the Aria by David Belles (Power Modules) would be on my short list. I have never heard a Belles piece that didn't sound outstanding.
Lots of good advice here on amplification. However, if you are going to put them on stands next to the tv, I would consider a full range (or almost full range) floor standing speaker as they don't take up anymore floor space. For almost $5000 there are a lot of good choices. Good luck in your...
I have an original pair of Large Advent tweeters and their crossovers. They are the orange fried egg tweeters, and they are in excellent condition. Free but pay for shipping.
Ralph has been designing and manufacturing amplifiers for many decades. His products are highly respected, and his customers are happy. A little respect to one of the leaders in the industry would be appropriate. Now I am going to make a ham and cheese sandwich and put some kind of mustard on...
I agree with you on the higher sensitivity vs low sensitivity point of view, I was just throwing a shoutout to Paul as he is a great guy and has great products. There was no challenging on my part intended (not this time anyway). Cheers.
I had a little VTL amp about 25 years ago that sounded superb, like a moron, I sold it to a buddy of mine. I can't remember exactly but it was like 15 or 20wpc. Anybody familiar with this amp and can help with a name or anything for it?
I don't miss any system I have had. I do miss that Cary V12 amplifier. I used to only run 2 tubes per side = 17wpc of triode goodness. IMHO, Cary's amps are better than their preamps.
Be careful with clean up. I "cleaned up" an old Carver amp I had, and it never worked again. If you clean it up do a very thorough job, I must have left some residue between some traces somewhere and they shorted, good luck.
I never tried 45's but liked 2A3's quite a bit. The 2A3's didn't have quite enough power for most of the stuff I listen to. On stuff like James Taylor, they were fine. I ultimately settled on EL34's as 25wpc does dynamics and bass quite a lot better than just a few watts. Ultimately, it depends...
