Re: Mc3500ii
Thanks for the comments guys!
This has been a little project with a bunch of parts. I tossed my hat into the ring last January at Audio Classics. When my lottery number came up a few weeks back after auditioning against a pair of MC75's it was time to scramble the finishing touches. Nine months of planning was quite helpful.
Initially, I thought pull the current MC 275 and pair of 75's out of the butcher block racks and replace. Not Quite. The 3500's need free-standing open air requiring moving to the opposite side of the living room. Actually made up cardboard mock-ups to check the impact on aesthetics. My wife was very supportive even as I hemmed and hawed. Power was another issue. Having one dedicated twenty amp line, I figured just run some 12-2 along the floor joists via the basement. Not Quite Again. So while running one new circuit, we ran two and each amp has its own dedicated fifteen with 12-2 good measure.
Cabling also needed to change; long to short speaker and short to long (27 and 33 foot) interconnects. I am a DIY cable guy. For interconnects, had been using Pro Studio bulk from DH Labs (silver plated copper) but gave some Morgami a try; 2534 quad and 2549 went with the 2549 and Neutrik connectors preferring it over the ProStudio. Speaker cables made with ProCo Power Plus, Bi-Wired. I'll try something with previous Q-10 at some point but of late, been moving away from the silver wire.
Finally, one of the butcher block stands was disassembled using a slab under each 3500. Side rails were made from a ripped down 4 x 4 x 8 chunk of Doug Fir. My table saw was equally as handy as the soldering iron in this project. Final piece (for now) is to run the interconnections under the floor and get the living room back together. After which I post a picture or two.
As far as the amps, a lot more distinction between instruments, clear vocals and additional tones not previously realized. More to come on this as the newness burns off sounds sear in.
Enjoy the Sounds,
