C50 & Mc452 & old B&W801F
Hello Members:
In January I will buy C50 & Mc452 combo to use with my old B&W 800F Sp speakers (1987) - still working well and immaculate,...
Based on all gathered information, I am buying them "blind" - so no listening made on my speakers.
(currently I am using Krell Kav300i and SONY CDP-XA50ES cd)
(Van den Hull interconnects and MIT speaker cables)
I plan to use digital output from Sony and Apple McBook Air as a source - connected to DAC in C50.
Anybody has experience with this combination ?
Very best regards : Miha
p.s. further plan is to go to B&W 800D,...B&W 800D, McIntosh C50, McIntosh Mc452, McIntosch C70, McIntosh 2152, McIntosh MCD550, McIntosh MB100, McIntosh MT5, Audioquest Oak speaker cables, Audioquest Sky pre-power cable and CD-pre cable, PS Audio Power distributor, Acoustic Zen Tsunami power cables..

The C50 and MC452 is a great combination. I think you will like it. I know a few members here who love McIntosh and especially B&W speakers. I had MC601's and miss them.

Re: C50 & Mc452 & old B&W801F
Hi:
As much, as I would like to have tubes = 2500, I am afraid of long term ownership cost/stability/etc.,... This was the main reason for C50,... + Equaliser - might get handy in fixing some CDs,...
Mc452 will be here soon - C50 is coming from USA - so a couple of weeks+.
Now, I am "budgeting" for 800D :-)

Re: C50 & Mc452 & old B&W801F
Hi,
but the sound from a tube premapli and a C50 is different!!! of course personal taste!!
Sorry you buy the preampli in Usa with the change from 115 to 230 !?!?!?!? this "operation" is not complicate but the sound is really not the same!!!
the pre product for the EU (230) are differente from a 115 with the change to 230 from a "dealer"!!!! Never in my life! You safe money but the price in perfomance are very very high!!!!
Your C50 will ve like a very entry level preampli priced 1000euro and not from a pre Mc priced 8000 euro!!!!
Best rgds

UP, understand!!!
a lot of people buy in Usa and than they change from 115 to 230. is not a complicate work but the sound is very diffrent.
Invest in a "original" EU version give you a much more pleasure!!

Re: C50 & Mc452 & old B&W801F
Hello:
Just very, VERY FIRST impressions,... using C50, Mc452 for a couple of hours with B&W801FSp, entry level Kimer Cable for speakers and "No-name" balanced interconnect (both borrowed). SONY CD as a source.
The first impression - "cold from the box" was WOW !
Compared to my small Krell - the BASSSSS, the amount of information,... on well known records,... simply WOW.
Will definitively go for B&W 800D & correct cabling/accessorise,...
The left rack is not completed, so the picture is just for the right side of my Hi-Fi :-)B&W 800D, McIntosh C50, McIntosh Mc452, McIntosch C70, McIntosh 2152, McIntosh MCD550, McIntosh MB100, McIntosh MT5, Audioquest Oak speaker cables, Audioquest Sky pre-power cable and CD-pre cable, PS Audio Power distributor, Acoustic Zen Tsunami power cables..

Re: C50 & Mc452 & old B&W801F
Small update & question:
I am still getting familiar with Mc452 & C50 - new B&W 800D to come mid March,...
I made a comparison between using my SONY CD normal output (RCA) and digital coax output connected to C50 digital input.
The level is matched and I was able to switch the inputs very often/easy on remote,...
AMAZING thing is, that normal output sounded MUCH better (!) then digital - this was totally unexpected, since I am 99,9999999% sure DAC in C50 is much better then in my almost 20 years old Sony,...
The difference was in the "size" left/right of soundstage and "air" of the sound - and not small difference !
The reasons I can think of are:
- the digital output of SONY CD is crap - possible
- the cable is the issue - brand new, cable with correct impendance - highly unlikely
- the SONY DAC is better then C50 DAC - hard to believe
- ???
Any comments ?

Re: C50 & Mc452 & old B&W801F
The setup is now slowly completing,...
I also bought MCD550 CD (I am still using demo box - my new one arriving mid July) - so all "McGear" - sounds Great !
Basss is great on B&W800D - highs are sweet - very natural and easy-to-listen at low/mid or high levels - just as I want,...
Audioquest cables seems to work well with this - I plan to buy AQ Sky also from CD to Preamp - and after - just listening :-)

Re: C50 & Mc452 & old B&W801F
Plus you are possibly hearing the difference between the ladder DACs used in the Sony's era as opposed to the Multi-bit DACs popular now. Some just prefer the old style and several manufactures have gone back to making convertors using the old style chips.

Another small update to my system - Audioquest Oak speaker cables (bi-wired) - BIG improvement over AQ Mont Blanc,... I did not experiment with bi-wiring / normal wiring, because the cable ends are soooo stiff, I hardly connect them to speaker terminals - plays wonderful, anyway ;-)
