Re: Thinking of .7 or 1.7i

LOL Jack... ok listening to a Norah Jones album. Only a few clicks above where I would listen with the KEF's. Very nice, very open! Surprisingly good bass. I did kick the sub up from 50 to 55 on its volume and from 50 to 60 on its low pass filter.

The KEF's are easier to drive, but not night and day. They are rated at 8 ohm, but reports I have read suggest they should be rated 4. They are 89 dB versus the Maggie's at 86.

This is exciting Randy. Quite a change speaker-wise but one I’m happy to see you take.

Rip of my SACD of 10cc The Original Soundtrack on the Maggies is startling.... no boxes and the music (and sound affects) are just filling the room, and almost no more volume than I would normally listen to this!

Thanks Mike and Jack. Listening to Venessa Fernandez in DSD512 upsampled to 24.6 MHz... holy crap... the Magnepan's are very much impressing the heck out of me. So open sounding... not as tight of sweet spot as you indicated earlier. Simply a wall of music... very nice. For me the T+A is not struggling at all. Sounding pretty amazing!

Randy, I noticed that you have toe-in, but you can also experiment tilting them upwards just a little bit.

The stands that came with them do tilt them up a touch. There is only one position on these. The photo is from lower level; standing it shows the tilt more and also shows the speakers are actually much larger than this picture indicates. The stands that are coming will raise them up a little and should work well on solidifying them against vibrations.

I did move them around a little last evening and so far I am liking this position. Not extremely easy to move because the Kimber Kables are bi-wires, so I have to hook both to the banana connector. They are also not the easiest thing to move around .

That is very nice setup Randy! Maggies are easy to listen to and I can listen to them for several hours.
I tried several integrated and amps with them. I swapped the gears but the Maggies are keeper.

    Enjoy!

I have my .7s on the acrylic bases which elevates them off the floor a few inches and keeps them vertical with no tilt. An added bonus is that I think they look better on these stands than they do on the standard feet.

    Congrats Randy!

Give them about 75 hours of break in to sound their best. Also, play around with positioning and toe in. Even a 1" change can make a huge difference.

I did notice slight movements in locations do indeed make differences, more so than the KEF's, by a long shot.

Re: Thinking of .7 or 1.7i

So I am listening to MoFi's One-Step of Yes's Fragile. Holy cow... I just realized I am no longer listening to speakers playing back the album but instead I am inside the music listening to the musicians playing. I do not think I have ever experienced that before. Simply wow.

Quite remarkable; listening to Simply Eva and I swear Eva Cassidy is sitting there playing her guitar and singing to me. So this is what no boxes sounds like ?

What amazes me is I thought to get to this type of experience was way above my budget reach. Magnepan are certainly one of the best values in quality audio, no doubt.

I also realize they are not for everyone. If I was looking to knock the walls down, playing AC/DC at concert levels, I am sure they would not work. But for what I am looking for in my audio system they seem like they are going to be amazing!

Hehe... I can't remember the last time I got into some real rock on my home system. I did listen to ZZ Top through my headphones recently. Seems like headphones are the only place I like to crank it a bit any more .

Re: Thinking of .7 or 1.7i

I've always known that my gear needs to warm for a half hour or so before it sounds its best (it really needed to when I had tubes). I have noticed this even more so with the Magneplanar speakers. Maybe it is that they are more revealing or maybe the Manepan's themselves need some warm up time.

    Anyone else notice this?

I just saw that. I was surprise that FedEx is delivering on Sunday .

It was funny, the owner of the company that makes the stands messaged me when someone in the Maggy forum said I should get a pair and I replied that I had a pair coming; he wanted to know where I was getting them from. I told him a good friend of mine from back east bought them but was not going to use them so he was sending them to me.

He thought some reviewer he just sent a pair to was scamming him. I said no that was not the case, but it was really none of his concern who I was getting them from since it was a good friend of mine and I know the source. He was ok with that.

It is no worry, and he was cool. We messaged back and forth a few times. I understand his concern but he knows this was not his "reviewer" pair .

3.7i ehhhh... they look huge... our club president told me that one of our members has a pair in a small room... it must take up the entire room .

Re: Thinking of .7 or 1.7i

If I had the room, I'd love to try Soundlab speakers.

Actually, Mike just picked up Quad. That's another possibility, although I'd worry about those panels attracting dust. There's always something for me to worry about.

My brother is tickled pink with his 1.7i. Maggies are awesome with McIntosh too. Another way to get your Binghamton jones satisfied.

Both pairs of my Maggies sound the same at start up but my Pass amp and BAT preamp need some warm up before sounding their best. If I turn on the amp and pre about 30-40 minutes before listening the speakers sound the same regardless. I would not call the 1.7's and lesser Maggies the most revealing speakers but they have such a huge sound that it is hard to miss subtle changes in sound.

Randy, very excited for you! Love your enthusiasm. Makes me want to upgrade my LRS for a pair of .7’s! Maggie gives you a year to upgrade, I believe. Happy listening.

I believe that is only for the LSR's. I am enjoying the .7's a lot. Seriously thinking of selling my KEF's. Something I thought I would never do.

Well coming across a Mc that fits the bill certainly would also be worthy of consideration .

Although I will say of the several McIntosh amps I have owned I feel the T+A amp sounds better. I will say I have not owned one of their newer higher models however. It makes me sad being I grew up next to the factory .

It is nothing like the company you grew up around. It is now just a part of a multi-national conglomerate whose main outlet for sales is Best Buy. The last of the McIntosh people won't be there much longer. If the T+A sounds better to you then going up the Mc line won't change that just cost more.

That is weird, I replied to this earlier and it is gone. Wonder if there was a server reset or something.

So far they seem good. Still getting used to the speakers; very different from what I am used to, but also impressive.
