Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Anybody can tell me about the 3.5R ? I used to have the 1.7 & 3.7 before however I didn't have a room for them so I never heard what they really can do. Now I have much bigger room willing to try them again. however I really like to buy used one for now see how works in my new room before I made up on mind to go with Brand new
Is the 3.5R is as good as 3,7?Paul

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Is the 3.6 as good as the 3.7? Then why would a 3.5 be as good as a 3.7?

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
The answer to that is no, every model change is suppose to be better but better for who, i loved the sweet sounding MG-3A but others said is was to sweet did not like the 3.5s found them to lively but others adored them liked the 3.6 and 3.7 but would i refuse a good deal for the difference no but if i had the money of course i would rather have the latest model it is not because a little upgrade to a 3.7i is now available that the 3.7 is no longer good there may be a small difference but is it that important $$$$$ to you.
PS: Don't worry BlueMcIntosh with your gear all Magnepans should sound pretty darn good, i wouldn't worry to much about that and remember this dollar for dollar you need at least double the money to equal the sound of panels.André - - - Keep it simple system

Hard to beat Magnepan. If I didn't own Magicos I would buy the 20.7s on Mye stands.

Thanks. Do you think my MC275's will feed them enough power to drive them ?

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Hi Paul i have had the chance to hear both Magnepan 20.7 & Audio Exklusiv P-3.1 and for just about the same price i would choose the 20.7s with no hesitation IF you have the room because the Audio Exklusiv P-3.1 is a much smaller speaker.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
If you read the info on Magnepan's website, you can see they favor SS amps with big power supplies. The Magnepan's have a reputation for being current hungry beasts and Magnepan recommends amplifiers that double their output as the impedance halves. Tubes don't fit that equation. The MC275 is a great sounding amp, but it needs an appropriate speaker and this could be a match made in hell.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Hi folks, feel warm to meet you guys here. Could any 20.7 users post a few pics of the xover part? Haven't find any yet, just wanna know if they use any exotic components, the crossovers in my 3.7 only use common components. This makes me curious.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
The 20.7 does not have an external crossover any more. To take a pic would require dissembling the back panel.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Upgradeable ...yes Kev but only to the extent that any speaker crossover could be upgradeable if you took the thing apart . I daresay that if one was knowledgeable about these things , you could even wire up an external box to house the crossover . The question is though...would you want to? The issue is not whether budget components were used but what sonic impact you'd have making changes to components that in the case of the Maggies, have been carefully selected over a long evolution. Similar to the point Kevin Hayes makes about NOS tubes on his amps . He uses $15 Chinese KT88's on $100,000 amps and tends to be quite strident in his views against using NOS tubes that haven't been matched or bench tested.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
With respect to the above I disagree totally. the question was about the "quality"as in the statement "the crossovers in my 3.7 only use common components. This makes me curious"
It is a well documented fact that over the years Magnepan have never gone to the "better" but have used materials in their crossovers, binding posts, fuses etc, etc, that will suffice. I don't really want to go down this road of bashing Magnepan for the materials they use & point out their shortcomings as I really like their product & have owned some. A perfect example is the jumpers they supply are solid copper, generic for the tweeter & midrange/bass. To list all of these things would be a huge disservice to a great product, but, from your point of view Shodhan, maybe some won't like the sound of inserting more "exotic" parts.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Sure I get it Kev - I was just trying to make a distinction between well-documented and discussed tweaks like changing the jumpers , spiking the speakers, stands and fuses . Those are all non-controversial areas and I've implemented most of them with Cardas cable jumpers , Hi-Fi Tuning fuses & Track Audio spikes. However (and you may beg to differ) , I think all of that is a far cry from technical upgrades like the crossovers which are firstly , hard to access and secondly , areas where you run the serious chance of altering a carefully tuned product. Some areas are simply more controversial and speaking for myself , there's a line in the sand I won't cross when it comes to things like this. Practically speaking , this is also the kind of thing that would have to be done on-site given the size of these things , which further limits options . My soldering skills are lousy .....

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
thank you very much.
But I search people, happy with their Magnepan 20.7.
Anyone ?
I hear Accuphase A47 with Preamplifier Accuphase and DP 550...It's very bad.
I suppose they do anything : they prefer I buy Wilson Audio.
I suppose the Magnepan are not in phase.
The sound was very bad and I prefer DALI Rubicon ??? Very strange.... Sound was very poor, not accuracy, voice are bad....
So, I have many doubt.
Can someone tell me that is thinking about Magnepan 20.7 ?

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
If you don't get any replies, is there a Magnepan dealer near you? If so, ask him if you can bring in your amp and preamp into the store and listen to the Magnpan's closest to what you want to buy. He might be willing to do this if you do it during his slowest weekday when nobody will be in the store. Your amp isn't obscenely heavy so lifting it isn't impossible.

You need more power. I have tried & listened to many different power variations on the 20.7's & big reserves with power to boot was the better sound every time.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Maggies need power , so you can lift the volume , i do find them Lacking in dynamics , but they do have a clean open presentation, the 3.7 is the sweetspot in the line ...

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
20.7s lack nothing in natural sounding dynamics or low end extension. I sold Magicos that cost multiple more because 20.7s were best sounding speakers I have heard. Totally unboxed sound.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
T-B, You have enough power. Make sure you have a big enough room for the 20.7s or maybe try the 3.7s with subs. 4 meters wide by 6 meters long for a minimum would be good. The speakers need to be at least 1- 1.5 meters out from the front wall. The distance to side walls is somewhat less critical for dipoles.
As A. Wayne says, most dealers don't set the speakers up well. An over-damped, dead-sounding room with lots of absorption or speakers closer than 1 meter from the front wall takes all the life and dynamics out of the sound. I've rarely heard them sound good in a store either but there probably aren't many dealers in France.
Good luck!

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
I certainly would consider the 20.7s with the right size room. Definitely would add subs. Properly setup with the right gear would be a fantastic speaker.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
If you can't get Maggies 5 ft. or more off the front wall, I would not buy them. I moved from an apartment where I had them about 4 ft. off the front wall to a house where I have them 9 ft. and 7 ft. off the front wall, and the difference is quite noticeable. There is a caveat to moving them far off the front wall--you lose mid bass. However, the imaging and sound stage is better.

I found sweet spot was 5-6 feet off front wall and equidistant from side walls, tweeters on inside for my room. Toed in by a few degrees.

Re: Should I get the Magnepan 20.7 ?
Hello, thank you very much for yours advices.
My room is 6 meters by 6 meters. Infinity Kappa 100 are for the left loudspeakers 1 meter for the left side wall and 1,2 meter out from the front wall.
There are 4 meters between my 2 loudspeakers and the right loudspeaker is near the windows (2 meters).
How much cost Magnepan 20.7 in USA ? Because in France, they cost 18500 Euros so I think perhaps 21600 US$. In France, the price is include taxes(+20% in France).
There is few dealers for Magnepan. 2 at Paris, 1 at Lyon ...That what I know.

Unless you need a local dealer it appears you could do better buying them in the USA and shipping them back, and get a US vacation and probably a Magnepan factory tour. Magnepan might even help arrange the shipping and you would still come out ahead.
