Magnepan 1.7i's in the house and dialed in...

Been playing with positioning all day yesterday and today, both the speakers and listening seat. These massive Maggies (massive for this room anyway) are doing the incredible disappearing act, and I've got the subs integrated perfectly. Solid center image, perfect panning from left to right which extends just beyond the side walls, all of the detailed and articulate bass benefits from the Maggies, and getting that low end foundation kicking in from 45Hz on down from the subs.

    Man, I'm really digging this!

This is the kind of performance I've been hunting for for several years now, but knew I never had the right size room for it... Until now. Of course, the new Quad Artera Pre preamp is doing its magic as well, which I heard the large improvements it made on its own with the last speakers I was running in here (the preamp was the only change in the system). In the past few days, this system has made some major leaps ahead in performance.

And yes, even though I'm still running the Emotiva XPA-2 Gen 2 amp, the combination of the Quad preamp and Maggies are proving this amp is a solid performer. Running at 500w x 2 @ 4 ohms and providing plenty of driving current, it's having zero issues running these Maggies up past 100 dB (mostly listen between 80 - 90 dB). Even so, at those higher volumes, the amp is composed and detailed. Completely effortless sound and non-fatiguing, not to mention it barely gets warm.

Now, when a deal comes along for a silver Sanders Magtech amp, if I have the funds at the time, I'll definitely snag it up and replace the Emotiva ASAP. But currently, I have no complaints with this amp at the moment.

    Thank you both.

My system has certainly made a few major leaps and bounds in the past week, that's for sure!

congrats, I've never heard a maggie demo I didn't enjoy. I always thought of them as easy listening or lower volume late night speakers but if you're reaching 100 db that's loud enough for most music.

Thank you. Yes, these 1.7i's have no problem playing at 100 dB for extended periods, though I very rarely listen at those volumes.

Right now I'm listening to Aurora - The Gods We Can Touch, at around 88 - 91 dB with peaks up around 95 - 96 dB. It's crystal clear and effortless. She sounds like she's literally in the room with me, about a foot in front of the TV, and the sound stage easily two to three feet out past the side walls. The majority of bass I'm hearing is coming from the 1.7i's, but when the deep bass comes in, it just rolls in naturally as it should. Amazing stuff going on in this room right now!

My GR-Research X-Statik's and Martin Logan SL3 couldn't even think of coming close to anything like this. It's simply not in their DNA. Trust me, I know. I tried for years with them.

Well, if I know the kind of sound I'm looking for and can't get it from the various loudspeakers I kept rotating through, why would I keep them in my system for much longer after their break-in period? If they haven't met my requirements at that point, keeping them longer isn't going to make me any happier. So I get rid of them and move on to the next. I owned Maggies in the past (MGLR-1's) and knew that was the sound I wanted again, hence why I went through a couple different electrostats, several different "box" bi-pole and di-pole loudspeakers, and numerous open baffle designs, seeing if I could get there via other, more compact loudspeaker technologies (always wanting to try different things). Living in apartments and a small rented house also limited the amount of space for proper loudspeaker positioning for larger Maggies, which was the other reason I was trying other types of loudspeakers.

So considering I've very happily had the 1.7i's now for nearly a year and a half, have made some upgrades to the room and recently some very considerable upgrades to the front end of my system, I bet you feel a little silly asking that question now.

Never posted a pic on this thread with the Odyssey Stratos monos. Better late than never I suppose. LOL

Only change is that I have the tweeters on the inside now.
