    S5's with grills

I've read that the S5s sound best without their grills in place but I'm really really digging the sound with them on right now. Did I just have too much to drink tonight? What has been your experience?

Marginally better (more open and bigger sound) with grills off but I have to really pay attention to notice it.

I like the sound both ways - a bit more open without but the highs are a bit more subdued as well, which can be a good thing depending on what you're listening to and how much room treatment you've done.

    Sweet Bud!!!

I find more extension and space without the grills and a slight smoothing of everything with them on. It's not a night and day difference and, depending on my mood or the recording, I find myself swapping back and forth. Glad to hear I'm not alone.

    Re: S5's with grills

These grills are nice. For those who haven't seen them, they are, basically a perforated metal screen with magnets for attaching. They very easily go on and off, which is nice since the cats are checking out these new things in the house, and the lower woofer is right at the bottom.

Anyway, last night I was listening to Lady Gaga to get an idea of the bass, and I remembered the grill test. So, on and off they went a few times. While I can live with the grills on, I think the S5s look better grills off. Also, the sound is a bit more open and clear with grills off. You can immediately sense a slight reduction in clarity when the grill goes on, and an increase in clarity when it goes off. I suspect this would even be obvious with a blind A/B test.
