S5 owners. - How far from the back wall

I have a pair of S5s arriving next week, and since they weigh almost 200 pounds each I want the first setup to be close to the final setup. Since they are sealed speakers I am wondering if placement from the back is as critical as with ported speakers. What distance from the front baffle to the rear wall do you suggest?

Instructions for S5 have detailed description on how to get right placement.

Okay. Where do I find this information? I can't find the manual on their web site.

Re: S5 owners. - How far from the back wall

Bud, one of the beautiful things of a sealed speaker is ease of placement. It really comes down to: how deep do you want your soundstage. 3 feet works, 5 feet works, heck, 10 feet works. Side reflections will always play a key role, so that may ultimately dictate where you want the speakers positioned. I experimented with 2 feet and all the way up to 6 feet. There wasn't a bad spot, only variations of good and better.

Okay, this is good news. I wasn't aware that ported speakers were more dependent on placement than sealed speakers.

When I heard the S5s they were about 20 feet from the front wall. Amazing depth!

I'm working today, but I can email the S5 manual to you tomorrow if you still need it. PM me your email address.

FWIW, my S5s are very happy in the position obtained from the Cardas formula.

Re: S5 owners. - How far from the back wall

I have the manual now thanks to Dpod4. At this point, I think they are just going where my current speakers are, or maybe another 6" inches further away from the back wall.

Generally a very good place to start IME.

I agree. I parked the S5s where my Maggies were before. I think the room interactions are as pivotal as the speaker.

Also this nifty little tool had proven invaluable in making sure speaker placement (tweeter to tweeter and tweeter to ear) are same distances.

+1. I use a Bosch version. Very handy, if not necessary.
