Interesting! Any idea why they are using a spiked version this time around?

Nice. The benefits of spikes coupled with the benefits of SPODs. Might have to try them after the speakers are finished breaking-in.

I was wondering the same thing Howard & posted the following question..

Interesting! I know performance is the driving force behind everything Magico do, so i'm curious why you've opted for a hybrid design between a pod & spike/base in this case in lieu of a variation of the MPod?
That said, i'm sure a set will find their way into my Christmas stocking, if not sooner .

Ummm, I asked for the price?

I think while MPODS would be cost-wise an overkill, these could be interesting for my S3s. Have read great things about the principle on the forum.

Also, I used to be a Stillpoints fanboy, despite some people on the forum suggesting that Magicos and Stillpoints might not be an ideal fit. After setting up a dedicated room with acoustic treatments, which improved my ability to hear what comes out of the speakers a lot, I removed the Stillpoints and concluded the guys on the forum were spot on.

    These could be another story...

I thought you were making a play on words - price point.

These seem to be significantly smaller and less complex than the MPOD's so they're probably a lot less expensive - which makes sense - $1000+ per footer is justifiable on a more expensive speaker but not necessarily on the S series (below the S7 anyway).

I got this reply from Magico re: my question why they opted for a hybrid design between a pod & spike/base for the SPod ..

Magico LLC Thank you for your inquiry. The SPod design is dictated by the size of the S1/3/5 coupling interface and overall weight of the products which are ideally served by spiked coupling to the floor.

It's too early to tell. Even my Dealer hasn't seen a set yet. But if the MPods are anything to go by, they should be well engineered and work a treat . I'm quite keen to order a set depending on price as I haven't spiked my speakers yet.

    Re: Magico SPOD - New!

I've been using Townshend Seismic Podiums under speakers with great results, but I have a 14x26 room with a fully suspended floor. I've found that, in the past, spiking has resulted in the floor creating peaks by resonating at certain frequencies. The Townshends helped this greatly. I'm wondering if the S Pods will perform as well when my S5 mk II arrive.

Then I can use one Cyclops to replace the Denali on the TV. That might be better, since on another forum Caelin said the 2000T was mainly for amps. Anyway, if I do I should get the SPODs also. SPODS cost <8% of S5 mk2, but you probably get >10-15% performance gain or even 20%.

Just thinking out loud for you.

Thanks. I guess by the time the S5s are 90%+ broken in some SPOD reports should be available, and if they are close to your guesstimate then it is a no brainer.

I think price-wise these are expensive, but not over the top. If you put stillpoints under the speakers (which I would not recommend), e.g. the Ultra SS would be $2000,-.

And if the MPODs are any evidence, these should even work.

The positive thing is also, that this time around Alon takes also existing owners into consideration, not just new customers. Magico SPOD - New!

What I wonder is if they are higher than the stock S5 MKII spikes. The stock MKII spikes raise the tweeter a bit higher than the stock S5 spikes. One thing I have noticed with both the S5 and S5 MKII speakers is they are very directional. That is, if you sit a little higher/lower or left/right then the sound will change. It is always good, but different.

I have observed the same. I have my S3s on TrackAudio spikes, which put them a bit lower and like it better that way.

Touché Magico SPOD - New!, was more in reference to the MPODs, which are a bit dearer. But after all, Magico is a hi-end manufacturer.

If the effect is however anything like the MPODs I don't even need to cry when paying.

Ok, d'accord. Then I understand where the Polish crying comes from Magico SPOD - New!.

But seriously, based on what I have understood - before actually hearing the difference myself - it should be worth it. Should be interesting to hear your view on the M3s with/ without MPODs. But I guess that would be too much of a hassle.

    Re: Magico SPOD - New!

Tears have dried and SPOD Plus (for S1/S3 mk1) is in the house.
Improvement is immediate and obvious. More bass articulation, more clarity and focus (hence, more details and rich sounding). Not sure if any break-in is needed. Still need more listening time for detail assessment.

  39. #39

    Re: Magico SPOD - New!

Wow, that was fast. Very exciting!

Being a fellow S3 owner, I presume you had good bass articulation and clarity before, so what has changed?

Do I understand you correctly that the sound is more rich now? What about distortion, any impact at high volumes?

In parts it sounds a bit like the changes wrought by Stillpoints SS Ultras. What I however heard with the Stillpoints, was an increase in distortion as a price to pay for the increased fullness.

Apologies about the probing questions, but I am genuinely interested as I am contemplating a similar move.

No problem, Kuoppis. Magico SPOD - New!
Yes, I did already have very nice bass articulation and clarity before. Nothing really has changed and I don't feel it's different sounding. It's just more of the same goodies.
I think more rich sounding is due to improved clarity, so it's just easier to hear more details.
As for distortion, I think it might probably be also related to upstream components, cables, power situation and file quality (I only have digital, at least for now). If SPOD induces more distortion, I don't hear it. Haven't really gone to very high volumes yet as it's 10:30pm on the west coast. Will report back once I have a chance.

    Magico SPOD - New!

What I meant about distortion above is if S3s become more detail/rich sounding due to SPOD or Stillpoints, any weak link in the chain, whether it's components or file quality, it might become easier to hear.

My thinking is S3 mk1 + SPOD will never become S3 mk2, but without SPOD, we may never know S3 mk1 full potential.

  44. #44

    Re: Magico SPOD - New!

Possible. My conclusion from experimenting with Stillpoints was that the LS were less stable, which induced some distortion. Removing the Stillpoints also increased clarity and detail. Similar comments have been posted by S5 owners.

This is also the reason why I am intrigued by the SPODs. Alon does not recommend Stillpoints for that very reason, but knowing his products he has introduced something which brings the benefits w/o the negatives. The SPODs are more rigid compared to Stillpoints and hence allow solid coupling of the LS to the ground, while providing some damping.

Still a bit undecided on that. The S3 mk2 has yet to show its potential, will be interesting to hear whether the mk2 is a bit lean sounding or not. Measurements do raise some questions.

Of course this is a question of preference, mine is with the fuller sounding Magicos. But any Magicos will be good speakers.

A new model does as such not necessarily make a superior product.

Let me put it this way. SPOD is no less stable than S3 original spikes.
I also do not think the improvement that SPOD brings to S3 is as much as MPOD does to M3 or M-Pro. When Mike gets his SPOD, maybe he can make an assessment in this regard.

Exactly my thinking. I want to wait on some time before deciding on mk2. I read about mk2 and I get antsy. Then I sit down and listen to my S3s and I calm down again. lol

    Magico SPOD - New!

My understanding is as well that the SPODs are much more rigid than Stillpoints (latter are not rigid). I would however assume that a solid steel spine is mechanically more rigid that a sandwich construction of layered materials.

While a non-rigid approach might work on speakers with softer materials and a sounding corpus (like e.g. Harbeths), it did not work with Magicos in my system and environment. Hence the interest in SPODs.

As to the effect of MPODs on M3/ M-Pro versus SPODs on S3s I can only trust your ears at this point, as you have heard both and I have heard neither Magico SPOD - New!.

Magico SPOD - New! - so funny, exactly the same process here. And I am really happy with the mk1 right now.

My conclusion is that I will definitely not go with the mk2. There is just too little new to warrant that investment and the change was made to soon. So that will be penalized. I will later on decide about whether to stick with Magico or go another route altogether.

And I have yet to be convinced about it being a good idea to swop out the alu woofers. As a result the mk2 might have lost some warmth and I did not enjoy the previous colder sounding models as much.
