"There can be no question: My measurements
    of Magico’s S5 Mk.II reveal
it to be a superbly well-engineered
    loudspeaker.—John Atkinson"

    "My congratulations to Magico’s Alon
Wolf and Yair Tammam for producing
a speaker that offers full-range, uncolored,
    low-distortion sound coupled
    with superbly stable and accurate
    stereo imaging. At $38,000–$42,750/
pair, the S5 Mk.II is not too dissimilar
in price to the Wilson Audio Alexia
    ($48,500/pair) and Vivid G4 Giya
    ($39,990/pair), which I reviewed in
    December 2013 and March 2014, respectively.4
    The Magico S5 Mk.II joins
those speakers as one I could live with
when I’m done with this reviewing
business. It may indeed be large, but, as
I found out, it had no problems, large
    or otherwise."

    Wow!

Congratulations Bud, and very good decision! At half the price of the M3's, the S5 Mk2's are a relative bargain. More importantly, I think they will stand the test of time .

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

Can the spikes be used directly under the S5 v2 as with the original S5. I ask because the outriggers will cause me to shift everything a bit to the right. Unfortunately, that either narrows the distance between the left/right speaker, or moves the right closer to the hallway opening to the back of the house.

Yes spikes with S5 mk2, but they go into the outriggers.

That is a necessity if you listen with minimal room lights. Otherwise it seems as if a car is coming at you, and that really destroys the mood.

I'm surprised there's no option to dim or switch off the power light? I have the same problem with my Acoustic Revive RR-777 which has a bright blue light which also can't be dimmed. My solution was to place two swabs of grey coloured electrical tape over the light which still left a diffuse blue light which is much easier on the eyes .

Can the S5 v2 owners give an idea as to how they sound brand new, that is before they break in. Any idea of break in time? Right now my plan is to let them play 24/7 for a week or so.

I like that Myles said they sound good right from the start. However, 600 hours is a long time. Then again, my S5s are sounding great now, so maybe that is typical.

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

I just finished reading Myles review of the S5 Mk2's end to end. I noted with interest Myles observation "But interestingly, it's the solidity and focus of the speaker's center image that is most improved in the latest version of the Magico S5", owing to the machined 3D convex top plate as confirmed by Alon Wolf.

Apropos which, I recently asked Mark Jones about his view of the differences between the S5 Mk2 & S7 and he replied "The S7's are more enjoyable overall with better dynamics and an easier on the ear balance. However, the S5's are not far behind, a lot less money, and I think the sound staging from the S5's is a little better". Interesting as I suspected the new top plate would give the S5 Mk2 an edge over the S7 in that area.

Overall Myles review paints a picture of a very complete speaker with no real weak points to speak of. Some small compromises compared to the more expensive M3, sure. But no weak points. Of particular interest to me is the S5 Mk2's improved imaging, low level detail, off-axis performance, transparency & overall coherency. Oh and I might just throw in, I think Magico have improved the luster and depth of the M-coat paint finish vs the Mk1 model. So their paint shop haven't being sitting idle either! .

I don't know if anyone posted this previously? But the S5 mk2 earned a Class A rating in Stereophile's Recommended Components 2017 alongside other SOTA speakers such as the Marten Coltrane 3, Vandersteen Model 7 Mk2 & YG Sonja 1.3. Congratulations to Alon and Magico for this well deserved recognition .

But the S5 mk2 earned a Class A rating in Stereophile's Recommended Components 2017 alongside other SOTA speakers such as the Marten Coltrane 3, Vandersteen Model 7 Mk2 & YG Sonja 1.3. Congratulations to Alon and Magico for well deserved recognition of these terrific loudspeakers .
Ah, did they. So you mean now Stereophile finally woke up...Magico S5 mk2.

It's funny, I've heard that there were people who have been knowing already for a while that Magico make good speakers.

Yeah a little surprising considering the caliber of this system. My guess is the Dealer didn't have any S Pods on stock before the show deadline. They are certainly the icing on the cake to complete these speakers. As a side note, I'm surprised they went with a DCS front end. My choice would have been the Soulution 746+ for synergy, or Vitus MP-T201/MP-D201.

In regard to the X light refractions on each woofer, I have noticed that on mine, and photographed it for a post, but I never made the post.

Anyway, what I was wondering is if the woofers can be tweaked for better response by making sure the light images are in phase on each woofer. Notice how they are close on the left speaker, but off on the right. Should the we try to rotate a right woofer to get the light in phase with each other, and will that improve the sound.

Just the engineer in me wondering.

This is the photo I made that started me wondering if the pattern meant anything.

So how do you get a large image to appear on this forum?

To be honest I wasn't sure if your post was meant to be humorous, or was a serious question Bud . Going with the latter, looking at the graphene diaphragms and dust caps on my S5 Mk2's in natural light, atleast in my room the light refractions are not visible. The Graphene-reinforced carbon Nano-Tec material seems to be highly reflective of light, hence under show conditions with show lighting you get these uneven light refractions. However I think the uneveness of the refractions is purely due to the angle of the lights hitting the drivers. The S Mk2 series drivers (like all Magico drivers) are built to very tight tolerances, added to which Magico carefully test every speaker which leaves the factory to make sure the individual drivers & loudspeaker as a whole are within spec. For example MC measured the S5 Mk2's pair matching at a SOTA ±0.75dB L/R agreement from 50Hz to 36kHz in his review for Hifi Critic.

    Re: Magico S5 mk2

I was being serious. I found the light patterns curious when I saw it on mine, and wondered why it wasn't the same on both. Whether making it the same affects the sound or not is my question. I doubt it, but it would be interesting to investigate it if I worked at Magico. Then again, I probably would be fired if I did that.
