Will do, but I suspect it will be a great match. A 590 and a pair of A5’s. Hmmm...

Wow, if they sound that great on the video, I bet they really compete with the S3 Mk2 and S5 Mk2. The treble sounds so darn smooth. Is there a waveguide on the tweeter because something seems vastly improved there.

    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

We did a demo with the A5’s on Friday and used the Boulder 2160/11160/EMM DV2 at the clients request. Let me tell you, the speakers were definitely not out of their league with this line up. The A5’s continue to punch way above their price point. WAY WAY above their price point!

We’ve already sold 3 pairs and several sales pending.

    No surprise.

Mike, the A3s on their release took about 5 months to deliver to it customers. Do you have any idea how long it takes on the A5 from the time of order to delivery? I shouldn't asked because the answer may compromise my bank account.

Yes, all three pairs shipped in what I consider an under promise, over deliver time frame. Magico said “4-6 weeks”, but it was always much closer to 4.

Not surprised! I now use my A3's with a Naim 552/500 system, and I have zero feeling or experience that I am under-serving my system with "only A3's." I've now listened to them at home with Naim 252/300, 552/300, and 552/500, and each time they are 'hanging in there' and delivering. Takes the speaker upgrade pressure off that's for sure!

I’m just the opposite. I’m feeling the upgrade pressure to an extent.

While the A3s are absolutely wonderful, from what I understand the A5s: (1) have a better soundstage - better resolved; (2) the midrange is more refined with better resolution/details; and (3) the bass is better, tighter and cleaner than the A3s. If so that’s substantial.

Am I missing something? Honestly I don’t know, but it would be wonderful to experience a set of A5s at length until I make my final speaker selection. But I can’t justify the 6 month or so rental fee.

So much equipment; so little time.

I'm sure the A5's are "more" speaker. I'm just glad that when I listen to the A3's I'm not overcome with 'must upgrade'

You know what your secret sauce is, don’t you?

    NAIM!!!!

552/500 system. I’m jealous! You should see the mishmash of NAIM I have at home. LOL. I’m using a SN3 as a pre into a 250DR with a HI-Cap and the entry level NAIM streamer.

    I would love 500DR/552/555.

    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

After watching Mikes porn videos of the A5s my interest has been juiced for these speakers. My main concern is my room size. The ceiling is 8' and the width is 11' and the front wall to my seat is about 17' and then opens to a dining room behind it. I use two small powered sealed subs which I feel give me weight and body to instruments in my current soundstage. I just wonder if the A5 with the power of the Diablo would overpower my listening area. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't need any subs with the A5s.

With all due respect Mike and brodricj.

The correct answer was to say that there is no way the A5s could possible work in a room that size!

Do you sit the 'short way?' How far from the speakers is the 'sweet spot?'

I've found that, in our living room, more than just the dimensions of the speakers goes into whether they appear 'too imposing' for the space.

The height and width of our A3's is essentially exactly the same as the Devore X. The Devores are about 5 inches deeper. The X's seemed super imposing in our room, where the A3's absolutely do not.

The room is 13 x 18 and we sit the "short" way, 9 feet from the speakers on my laser when I sit at the sweet spot.

Which is why I cant tell whether the S3MkII would seem too much, absent dragging them into my room

I saw this video (*) and the question (rhetorical) that comes to my mind is: did you used the same camera?
If so the Magico smashes the competition.
    So powerful and clean!

I'm playing Mike's YouTube demo tracks on my M3's now. Nice choices in repertoire. Have a look also at Joseph Tawadros, his recent album with the SSO has been featured on ABC Classic FM this past week, caused me to go out and buy some CD's to spin on my Grandioso.

    Mike,
The tweeter in A and S series are different, from what i have experienced (comparing A3 to S3MK II and S1MK II) the sound in S series is much more airy, refined and i would say luxuries
Since A5 use the same tweeter as A3, I cannot see how A5 compared with S_MK II (yes on the button A5 will have more slam than S1MK II & S3MK II) but as a whole package I would still prefer S3MK II over A5 any day.

Please read post #55 where Mike says, "I’ll give the tweeter advantage to the S3 Mk2."

However, Peter Mackay of Magico states:

Thank you for your message and inquiry regarding the sound performance of the new A5 in comparison to the original S3.

We are pleased to report without hesitation that the performance level of the new A5 will easily surpass the original S3 loudspeakers. The advancements made at Magico over the past 2-3 years with transducer, enclosure and crossover designs are vast and have raised the bar significantly since the release of the S3.

Among several other refinements, the S3 MkII has a diamond tweeter. The S3 does not.

The new A5's look nice. Anyone know if they will work with a low powered tube amp? I have a friend who is speaker shopping in their price range, he uses a 45 watt/ch tube amp ( not sure of the make) and he will not go ss. We tried his amp on a pair of Wilson Alexia's last week, it was anemic sounding. Funny thing is the amp sounds terrific on his current speakers, a pair of TAD's.

I am going to guess, Mike, the A5s with the 160M are a great pairing. I feel my 160s have, if I were pressed, a slight bottom tilt to their overall presentation. A sealed cabinet Magico with its terrific base tonality and clarity would refine the 160s’ lowest octaves presentation. Just a guess, and my opinion of 160s (of which my experience is primarily with my Alexia v1, which are difficult to drive for any but the stoutest SS amps.)

And from what I read, the mids on the A5 must sound amazing with the 160s, where the glorious goodness of tubes are on full display.

They could at least make a comparison with A3 - not to mention (any) other speakers.
I know there are some comparisons with A3 here and on some other forums, but still...

I would be interested in comparison with let's say B&W 800 D3, Dynaudio Confidence 50, Kef Blade, TAD-E1TX, Focal Scala Utopia Evo... - all from the same or very similar price class in Europe (where A5 costs €29k / £25k).

During this unlucky covid situation I don't have a chance to hear Magico, since there is no dealer in my country.

Soundstage Australia had a nice review of A5, but without comparing to other speakers it's hard to relate to the review seriously.
in the review, it is written that the A5 uses the same twitter as M series....so wrong as M series twitter is diamond coated while A5 is not.

I don’t believe the review says that.

Nice review, unfortunately many reviewers just don't take any chances and do any meaningful comparisons.

There seems to be a widespread misconception that reviewers can pick an item they want to review that costs “X” amount of money and then they have the ability to call up 3-4 companies with competing products at the same price point and have those sent to them for comparison. Especially when you tell the 3-4 companies that you aren’t actually going to review their gear, you are just going to use it to compare against the actual item under review and the comments might not be flattering. Keep in mind that companies bear the cost for shipping their gear to reviewers and back to the company.

The issue of comparative reviews might sound great to audiophiles, but it’s a much more complex issue than people realize.

This reviewer (Edgar Kramer) has done a lot of reviews (more than 50 models of speakers for SoundStage! Australia), so he doesn't lack a reference for comparison.

And, if you ask me - "review" which doesn't mention ANY flaws of a product cannot be considered as relevant. It's almost pure marketing.
Unfortunately, there are to many "reviews" of that kind. According to these "reviews" all products are great and their worth is much higher than their price, bla bla... A total cliché

I opened the review link but didn't read it. Just skipped to the bottom to see how much they cost. $35K in Australia, sounds like a good deal. The local distributor Absolute Hi End is one of the good guys. Fair price, honest advice.

    Re: Magico A5’s Arrive!!!!

i found that to be an excellent review. it might need as well some experience to read a review.
you do get a lot of useful infos.
the a5 is easy to set up. that counts so much more than one would think.
a quality speaker like this will work many decades and most likely will change rooms multiple time during livespan.
yes, many products these day have no flaws at all. just limitations.
the reviewer really enjoyed the a5.
he is experienced and pointed out a good price relation.
and...he described the kind of sound he got, i felt close by reading.
