Not quite, you are working it backwards. The Magico is a US brand, hence exporting to the EU automatically increases price by about 20% for VAT, then there is the dollar vs Euro conversion. I believe the US price is around $24k - $25k.

Anyway you dice it the mark-up between US and German list price is 50%. in spite of that, the reviewer found them to be a great speaker.

The German list price includes 20% EU VAT, right? The US MSRP does not include State sales tax, right?

And you have to air freight the speakers to International markets, and there is a necessary International distributor function cost that can't be priced for free. All that considered, sounds pretty close to the level playing field parity pricing to me.

in the US we have local sales tax depending on the State/city you reside in, for me its 8.75% but its higher when I Import directly from the EU which I've done numerous times. That said, the spread is still 50% when you incl. VAT the Germans pay which is back at 19%.

    BTW, not so interesting review.
Jeff spent 90% of only interesting part of the review (= sound) talking about bass (and mostly with electronic music)...

I enjoyed the review. I like the system he had. MSB Discrete is fantastic with the A5’s.

I also agree with Jeff on Diamond tweeters. Ooooh la la.

From another article MSB+ Magico A5

Building a Supersystem Around Magico Speakers and MSB Technology Electronics

Mr. Wolf is dropping hints about the next generation S series!

JF: The A models, and specifically the A5, must be putting upward pressure on the current S series. What plans do you have to address that?

AW: The Magico team has been hard at work. Soon you will find out!

    Re: Magico A5 Review

Has Magico ever done a Mk3 version of a speaker? I don't think so....reading between the lines the translation might be, there is a S7Mk2 in the pipeline with trickle down driver tech from the A5.

    Good theory.

Perhaps, the alumium honeycomb drivers will be exclusive to the flagships of each respective line? For example, M9, S7mk2? and A5.

    Re: Magico A5 Review

By the in-room measurements shown in July edition of Stereophile, there is a pretty significant roll-off of high frequencies:
    8 kHz = -5 dB
    10 kHz = -7 dB
    15 kHz = -10 dB
    20 kHz = -14 dB

I'm curious how this affects the "air" and sense of ambience - for those who have heard them?

Also, even in pretty large room (32' x 24' x 9' 9") the bass seems to be too prominent - of course, it should not be flat and should gradually rise toward the lowest frequencies, but +10 dB at 100 Hz (+6 dB at 150 Hz) seems too much - and that is also addressed in review. What is the optimal room size for them?

And again - most of the sound description in review is related to bass

With the large boost in bass that comes from this room, is it possible to generate an accurate review of any hi-fi equipment?

  21. #21

    Re: Magico A5 Review

Every room has some room gain, but it is related to the size of the room. Smaller rooms have more room gain. And this room is far from small, so I don't expect that all "boost in the bass" is related to room gain.

Of course that measurements in room which is not familiar to me are not 100% relevant - that's why I'm asking people who have heard them.

Unfortunately, there are no Magico dealers in my country and during this "C-19 situation" it's a little complicated to travel to other countries just for speakers demo.

the German test linked in this thread also shows the bass bump and treble roll off. despite that they gave it a 15 out of a possible 15 points for neutrality.

    Re: Magico A5 Review

Measurements could provide us some very rough picture about the sound of some speakers, if we have some experience with different speakers and the relations between their measurements and our own listening experience.

Having the described experience, I don't ever judge the quality of speakers by its measurements, but I do have some expectations about how they could sound - their basic sound signature / character.

Speaking about reviews - how shall I put it...

How many reviews have you read lately that are:
    1. not saying that the product is very good or great or excellent?
    2. not saying that the product which costs more than 10k is fantastic?
    3. not saying that it's worth (far!) more than its price tag?

Most magazines even if they were not in the beginning - became pure marketing. 80% of pages are commercials and the rest are some reviews which again sound like a pure commercial. Just take a look at 132 pages of July edition of Stereophile, which is among better magazines

Some Hi-Fi companies invest A LOT into marketing and commercials. No need to name them.

That's why I trust only to my own ears and if I cannot, like now - I like to hear opinions of my friends that I trust or at least hear/read opinions on forums, mostly comparative (with other products) - just to get some rough picture.

Thats the nearfield avg summed response , if accurate then these speakers will be best with some toe in , than straight ahead, BTW thats a pretty good avg room response considering..

I've posted previously . . . we've been slowly auditioning speakers locally. There is a certain something about the Magico presentation that really suits us (my wife and me). Their approach to midrange and treble is significantly more "listentable" to us. No sense in fighting it -- we know what we like.

Was pretty ready to pull the trigger on A5 but I have the chance to bring the local demo pair of S5MkII into our home for a week. May as well have a listen to them.

Seems odd to me...pausing the purchase of one speaker pending the audition of another which is twice the price.

    Bart,

Wow, either way you are going to get a great speaker. And I think you will have a difficult choice to make. I haven’t heard the S5 MkII but have read where they have compared them to the A5s. They’re close. As you know the A5 has some trickle down from the M9. But the S series of Magico is great. I heard the S3 MkII and definitely liked it more than my A3s.

Like you, I own A3s, so I’m not near the level of either of the speakers you are considering. However, I love the A3s. Best speaker I’ve ever owned. But I’m due for an upgrade.

Enjoy your demo. Looking forward to your review … Awesome!

Was pretty ready to pull the trigger on A5 but I have the chance to bring the local demo pair of S5MkII into our home for a week. May as well have a listen to them.

While obviosly biased, I love my S5Mk2 speakers, and from both a sonic and appearance perspective. Being able to choose the speaker color to match the room decor is a big plus since they are in the room 24/7 whether being used or not.

Bud I wish I had your S5 MkIIs instead of my A3s. The S3 MkIIs sounded great and put my A3s to shame. I can only think about the music quailty that must come from the S5 MkIIs.

This is the demo pair, so I can have any color I want so long as they are black

If you get a good deal, go for it. A5 might be the king at its price point, but S5 mk2 is at another level. IMO S5 mk2 is very underrated.

That's the rub....the A5's are so good it kills the resale on the Q's.
