U1 mini or U1
Hi guys, my friend is currently selling his U1 (not the mini) and plans to get a new network transport. At the same time I am planning to buy a network transport to hook up with my external dac. Therefore I am thinking to get that U1 from him as he can offered me a pretty good deal as a closed friend. But another thing is I knew that the U1 mini is much newer in terms of the year released in the market and the MSRP still lower than the price my friend offer me on the U1.
As I read the comments on the U1, it comes with an external PSU but U1 mini is only SMPS. Is the external PSU worth to pay extra money?
How does sound quality for U1 compare with U1 mini?
Hope you guys can share me your thought so I can make my decision quick. Many thanks

Re: U1 mini or U1
The U1 Mini was released as a lower cost alternative to the U1, but of course there are compromises made like the internal SMPS in order to reach its price point. The U1 is still current in the Lumin lineup and its performance is at a higher level than the Mini. Lumin has previously discontinued models after releasing less expensive designs which outperformed the original, but that's not the case with the U1 which still holds their flagship position as a streaming transport. Hope that helps!

This long thread from the Lumin sub-forum has some good comparative perspective and some good general information:

Re: U1 mini or U1
I have owned both and compared them extensively. The U1 is considerably more transparent than the U1 mini... how obvious this will be to you depends on your ears and the rest of your system.

Re: U1 mini or U1
Other than the output structure and the functionality the Mini was never intended to compete with the regular U1 from a sound perspective. Starting with the case they are just different in terms of parts quality irrespective of the external power supply. So in the end you have to decide whether you want to spend the money on the U1 for the better performance or are happy with the Mini and an external power supply to get the same functionality. Your budget and your system make up with determine that. You seem to be trying to convince yourself that the Mini and the external power supply are sufficient so just go that way.

I just upgraded my mini with the sbooster a few weeks ago. If you like your dac I would strongly suggest this route. It definitely added a level of refinement that already was stellar. Mating with a bryston BDA3 via AES

Re: U1 mini or U1
I would like to use my Mac laptop instead of an iPad to control my Lumin U1 mini. I heard there is a website that we can go to do this. Does anyone know?

Re: U1 mini or U1
You can use the free Linn Kazoo app to control Lumin from a computer. Alternatively, you can try Audirvana Plus.

Are there routers you would recommend with U1 mini?

Re: U1 mini or U1
If I use Audirvana plus on my laptop, do I have to connect the laptop to Lumin Mini U1 with a USB cable?
-

Re: U1 mini or U1
No, you cannot connect the laptop to a Lumin using USB cable because current Lumin products do not have USB DAC function.
You can connect both the laptop and the Lumin to the network using Ethernet cable.
In the latest Audirvana Plus it should be possible to find Lumin in Audrivana as a UPnP device.
As for WiFi 6 router, I don't have specific recommendation, but I prefer Broadcom chipset, or Qualcomm chipset. Do not use any other chipset. To find out what chipset a router uses, you'll need to google.Peter Lie

Re: U1 mini or U1
Hi Wklie
I am not clear on your U1 mini/laptop set up. I can understand that U1 mini has to be connected via ethernet since it has no wifi capability. But, couldn't the laptop be connected to the router via wifi rather than ethernet?

Wklie
Do you think wifi-6 routers will make a noticeable SQ difference over the older ones?

Re: U1 mini or U1
The laptop may use WiFi if and only if your WiFi network is very good without much interference from neighbors. In case you use Roon, having the Roon Core on WiFi is not recommended.
I answered the WiFi router question with the assumption that you need a WiFi router upgrade for functional purpose. If your intention is SQ, you may look at LPS and fiber isolation (which also requires LPS) instead of replacing the router.Peter Lie

Re: U1 mini or U1
Hi Peter, I have set my u1 mini to idle sleep for 15 mins but somehow it doesn’t go to sleep after 30mins, I didn’t trigger the app during the idle sleep time. Could you please tell me is there some issue on the u1 mini?

Hi Peter
In my listening room I have only one ethernet outlet but 2 electronics: Lumin u1 mini and laptop. Would it be a bad idea to use the ethernet splitter?

Re: U1 mini or U1
No problem. In this case, please use an unmanaged Ethernet switch such as Netgear GS105.

Hi Peter
Is there fiber isolation system that you recommend?

Recently another user also have positive reports of using this FMC (SFP modules required) with LPS:

Re: U1 mini or U1
Hi Peter, regards to the FMC. I have bought a pair of them but not sure what’s the best way to put them in between the network. I am using the Netgear mesh WiFi router, Linger Audio switch with ocxo, and lumin U1 mini. Shall I put the FMC in between Router and Switch or switch and Lumin? Which way of setup has the most benefit for SQ?
-

Re: U1 mini or U1
You would need to experiment to find out. Generally, FMC is expected to be put just before the Lumin. Note that the Lumin-side FMC needs to be used with a LPS.

Re: U1 mini or U1
Hi Peter
My U1 mini is arriving tomorrow. I heard that leaving it on 24/7 for 1-2 weeks breaks it in. Does the mini need to be hooked up to the rest of the system turned on to break it in? Or can I just have it turned on by itself for 1-2 weeks?

It needs to have music playing through it during that time.

Re: U1 mini or U1
It needs to be hooked up to the DAC with music playing.
If the DAC is standalone (not integrated into an amp) and not tube-based, please turn on the DAC as well but leave the amp turned off. If you use USB audio output, the USB DAC has to be turned on otherwise it cannot play.Peter Lie

Re: U1 mini or U1
I will have U1 mini hooked up to Lampizator tube DAC, which is hooked up to a tube pre amp. Is it ok to just turn on mini and the DAC? I am assuming that Lampizator tubes shouldn't get too hot during the break in.

Re: U1 mini or U1
Hi Peter
I just hooked up my mini U1 to my router, but I don't see it on my network (below). Also the front display of mini just shows a large blue circle. What am I doing wrong?
-
June 10, 2020, 01:07 PM #34
Re: U1 mini or U1
The front blue circle is a normal status on first startup or after factory reset, or if you don't have any music in the Lumin current playlist.
Please launch Lumin app and select it as renderer. If you don't see it in Lumin app, please make sure your iPad is connected to the WiFi network of the router connected to the Lumin. The WiFi network must not have "Separate" or "AP Isolation" features enabled.Peter Lie

Re: U1 mini or U1
I am using Mac laptop not iOS, so I am assuming that Lumin app doesn't apply here? If not, what do I use to run Audirvana to control Tidal, Qobuz?

Re: U1 mini or U1
If you're connecting directly from the laptop via USB just use the Tidal and Qobuz desktop apps as you don't need anything else.

I heard that UPnP can pose security problems, at least in the past. Would using Luminary's as a UPnP device cause this problem?

The LUMIN App can't play to your phone, so you might be using the TIDAL app rather than the LUMIN App.
Please log into TIDAL from within the LUMIN App.

Also - if you are using a phone - there are 3 screens available.
| Now playing| Playlist | Browse |
Swipe the whole screen across to get to each. The | Playlist | will show the tracks that will be played in order (continuously) on LUMIN. It's possible that so far you've only been adding a song to the end and playing it immediately.[Associated with LUMIN]

Re: U1 mini or U1
U1 mini sounds great. In Tidal, is there a way to highlight the track in an album that is currently playing. I can see which song is being played (top left) but it would be good to see how many more tracks are left after the current one.

The button at the bottom-right of the playlist shows the current song number and total playlist number.
If you press this button, it will scroll the playlist to show which song is currently playing.
