Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

I was connecting a 2TB Samsung external hard drive to the T2 to play music, with no problems.

The Samsung is now full so I've copied everything (including adding some newer albums) onto a new 4TB WD external hard drive.

This is when the stuttering playback started.

Is a 4TB external hard drive (with no external power) not able to run on the T2?

Are external hard drives made differently and if they are, I have one which can't run smoothly on the T2?

I know I can use Minimserver to play my music but at the moment I'm checking all metadata is correct before copying the music to the Nas.

The other problem could be 'BubbleUPnP' app I use?
I'll check with BubbleUPnP and see if it could be the problem, which I doubt.

I'm pretty sure it is the 4TB size which is the problem, but I could be wrong.

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

Might just be a power issue, before trying a different drive, perhaps a powered usb might help and cost less than a new drive. Some portable drives draw more power than others and this may cause the stuttering. I suppose that only issue with that method is that it's another interface before the files get to the Lumin.

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

I think I'm going to delete some music off one of the 2TB hard drives I have to make space for new music.
Not something I want to do but it's the best solution for the time being.

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

Concerning the power issue: I've recently bought a new Toshiba 4TB external hard drive which I haven't tested yet.
I wonder if that will work better?

Is anyone connecting a 4TB external hard drive to their T2 and have no issues?

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

What is the model of the Western Digital 4TB external drive?

Different hard disks are certainly made differently, have different performance specifications, and may satisfy (or fail to satisfy) certain criteria depending on the use case. Although in general there shouldn't be much of an issue when using it with light read-only behavior as you would be expected when reading music files.

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

I can't figure out what model of internal disk drive might be inside the 4TB Western Digital Elements SE, but as I mentioned earlier it shouldn't really be an issue. I guess the power draw like mikeyb said, and the default filesystem format of NTFS if you didn't reformat it, are two things that might be in play here. Maybe Lumin can provide additional advice.

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

I can't remember if I reformatted the WD but I know it is NTFS.
I'm going to try the new Toshiba I have and see if that works any better.

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

With NTFS, size is usually not the problem (other than slower browsing). Power can be a problem. Some drives require more power than Lumin can provide. SSD is especially demanding in terms of power requirements.

Any idea if external hard drive manufacturers have specifications to look out for when buying external hard drives that will work on the T2?

Re: Stuttering playback with 4TB external hard drive

I wasn't able to locate the USB power draw requirements for your WD Elements SE 4TB drive, which I saw only has a single USB connection, but you can find external USB hard drives that have separate power adapters. You can also purchase USB hard disk enclosures and then put your own choice of hard disk inside.

I would recommend people avoid USB enclosures as much as possible. Many of them are very poor and cause all sorts of issues.

I've been thinking about the power supply to the external hard drive and if it would degrade the sound quality but then I thought about a NAS and that's the same, and if you are using a powered external hard drive with your X1, then it must be alright.

If you mount the drives from your Aurender to your desktop, you can have IDrive back them up to the cloud. That's what I did when I had a N10
