NAS recommendation for U1
Hi there,
I want to upgrade my nas currently using Synology DS216+ 4TB WD Red and running out of space.
What would be an upgrade NAS available? do solid-state drive in nas sound better than the 3.5 WD drive?
Thanks in advanced

Re: NAS recommendation for U1
Going to a Synology with larger capacity would let you use the Synology Migration Assistant to move your data over. Personally I'd go for traditional platter-based NAS drives, like the Western Digital Red series, for cost purposes.

You may be able to change the HDD to 2 x 8TB without upgrading the NAS hardware.
If you want to upgrade the NAS anyway, check out a fanless NAS such as QNAP HS-453DX.
You might spend the money elsewhere (such as fiber isolation and/or LPS) instead of paying the higher price of SSD.Peter Lie

Re: NAS recommendation for U1
Thank you Peter for your response, looks like I won't gain any performance upgrading to a new NAS. I will take your advice and install a bigger hard drive
Your suggestion with 2 x 8TB set up as RAID?

Re: NAS recommendation for U1
Mirror or not, that's up to you for your needs.
The max capacity is a little confusing. Official Synology web site seems to indicate your NAS with a 64bit CPU can support a volume over 16TB (with a sufficiently recent version of Synology DSM):
DiskStation Manager - Knowledge Base | Synology Inc.
But the original specs of your NAS indicate 8TB x 2 only:
https://global.download.synology.com..._Sheet_enu.pdf
I believe, but not 100% sure, larger than 16TB should work and the 2016 spec was outdated.Peter Lie

Re: NAS recommendation for U1
Backup your data on the NAS, pull out the old drives, put in the new drives, prepare/format the new drives using Synology utility, and restore your data

Re: NAS recommendation for U1
You probably don't need to backup the data somewhere else: Replace Drives to Expand Storage Capacity. Note that the Repair action can take a long time, and you just need to wait. I think it took over a day per new larger hard disk when I last did this, but my original hard drives were larger than 4TB each.

I upgraded the power supply on my Gigafoil v4 to a Weiss PSU 102. It’s very nice step up. But with the new model, you’re looking at $2000 before even investing in a SOTA linear power supply.
