Lumin X1 and using the remote with a Hard Drive attached.

Lumin X1 and using the remote with a Hard Drive attached.

Since the X1 only has one usb input I was using a usb hub to connect both the remote and a hard drive to the Lumin.
Well, I just reconnected the hard drive directly to the Lumin and I do believe I am getting better sound quality without the usb hub. Although now I can't use the remote.

Has anyone experienced this? or does anyone have suggestions to resolve this so I can use the remote?

Ozzy - Two possibilities that come to mind would be to either use a NAS drive on your network to store your music files, or to connect your USB drive to a computer on your network so the files would be accessible as long as the PC was powered up. Either way the Lumin X1 should have access to the music files on the network and the USB input on the Lumin would be available to connect the remote. Peter may have a recommendation as to which connection scheme would provide superior sound quality, or he may have a better suggestion.

You could connect the X1 to the network over fiber, and direct-connect a L1 to the X1 via ethernet. There are probably other ethernet hard drive options that can direct-connect via ethernet, for instance a NAS, although I haven’t tried that.

    A better USB hub?

Thank you for the suggestions. I think that using a separate powered usb hub to connect both the hard drive and the remote is not a good thing. I duuno it may be the extra dc voltage in the powered hub, or it just may be too much more extra cable.

What I have bought to try is a usb adapter that plugs into the Lumin that has 2 usb inputs. Thus far this seems to be work well, but the best test will be in a few days when I again go straight into the X1 without the adapter.

I am using the fiber cable to the Lumin X1. A nas set up would probably be helpful. (If I knew how to do it).

Well, the usb adapter has done the trick. It just plugs into the back of Lumin and gives you now 2 usb's inputs. And I do not notice any sonic degradation.

Ozzy, would you mind sharing which USB adapter you are using? I want to continue using my remote with the X1 and have been looking for a solution that will not degrade sound quality. Thank you!

Hi, are you using this hub with the X1? Plugging in to a DAC and the Lumin remote sensor? Do I need to plug in this hub to electric outlet?

The powered usb hub does need to be plugged into a AC outlet.

    Update:
I have found that the addition of the USBe Perfect to the powered hub allows me to use both an external hardrive and the remote. And the sound quality is actually improved!

This little gizmo seems to do a good job filtering out whatever nasties that the powered hub adds.

    damcats,

I am now using an Anker Superspeed Hub powered by a 12V IFI i powered X which is then plugged into my AudioQuest Niagara 7000. I also have the USBe Perfect at the hub output that my usb cable plugs into.

The previous plug device that I was using had 2 usb side openings and the other end plugged directly into the Lumin. But I think the powered Anker to be better sonically with the items listed above and my HI-End usb cable plugs directly into the Lumin, not an adapter.

I hope I have explained it well.

Hi Ozzy. I am not exactly clear. Can you provide a link to the Anker device you are using? Also, I couldn't find a USBe Perfect, so not sure what that means. And lastly, can you clarify the connection flow? I think you are saying you plug your high-end cord into the Lumin? I am using the X1 as a stream only at times, so I don't see how I could plug my high end USB into the X1 directly? Thank you!!

The usb hub is similar to what MaXH13 has posted above in this thread. Check out Amazon.
The USBe perfect can be found here. Core Power USBe Perfect | Underwood HiFi

The usb Hub is only useful if you need to attach a hardrive and the Lumin remote to the Lumin at the same time. The Lumin X1 only has one usb input.
