Thread: Lumin X1 power off procedure

I have been turning my Lumin X1 on/off by the rear rocker switch. I must admit it is kinda of a pain to reach behind the power supply to access the switch.

Yesterday, I turned it off by the remote control. However, the blue light still stays on and this morning the power supply was warm.

So, what is the best method?

Thanks. I think the remote control also can be used in the same manner as the Lumin app. However, with either method the blue light remains on, and the unit remains somewhat warm.

Thus, my question, is it better to turn off the Lumin from the back switch on the power supply? There are no instructions as to the preferred process.

I use the remote to put the X1 into standby. I may be incorrect, but have been of the opinion that completely powering down power supply initially reduces sound quality when powering back up and playing music again. However, I admit I have not tried critically listening to both methods and may be incorrect that power supplies have a ramp up period when being powered off. I look forward to feedback from those more knowledgable than I am on this subject.

I think I agree with you, but what bothers me is the unit remains warm while in stand-by, so is it good for the unit in the long term?

So, I posed this question directly to Lumin and below is Angus response.

Hello Ken,

The stand-by mode will leave most of the unit’s function on for music playback. Please switch it off using the main switch at the back of the PSU to completely switch off the unit. Most users will just leave the unit on and have it on auto stand-by.

But I am still concerned that leaving the power supply switch on the unit may succumb to an early death with the ongoing heat it produces.

My X1 power supply is only slightly warm in standby, but I do not have an IR temperature measuring device to quantify. Have you actually measured temperature of yours? I have my power supply to the side of the X1. I have both the power supply and X1 sitting on A/V RoomService EVP footers under the body of each--3 of them under the power supply. They elevate higher than standard feet, but I would guess there is more insulation under the power supply with these than without. Again hand feel only, but my X1 seems similar to my Antipodes K50 G4 in standby. Temps on it can change when active depending on activity of the computers within. Antipodes web control access has monitor gauges displayed on the web interface that shows CPU Usage %, Memory Usage % and Core Temperature for Server computer and for Player computer. Antipodes generally recommends leaving the unit on when not in use for sound quality and for potential software upgrades sent during very early AM hours. The G4 hardware upgrade involved several changes, with one being changing from linear power supplies to switch mode ones. The recommendation for leaving on did not change with this change. Their recommendation also supports in my mind leaving the X1 in standby. However, your unit may be running hotter than mine. I would suggest quantifying the actual temp of your unit and communicating with Lumin, and possibly here, for further feedback. I empathize with your concern on heat. I also have a Mola Mola Makua preamp with DAC. That does run much warmer, hot, than these other pieces and is a known condition. I do power it down when not in use.

It's not that it gets too warm, it just seems that it does not really go into a "sleep mode". If the Lumin power supply on/off switch wasn't so difficult to reach on my rack to turn it off then it wouldn't be much issue.

And, the Million-dollar question is, does it sound better in "stand-by mode" when not being used and then turned on by the remote? I think (gulp) it does...

But as per my original question, is it good to keep the power supply always on, doesn't that shorten its lifespan?
