Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

We have not tested the $11 Cisco 2km 1310nm 1000BASE-SX SFP module you purchased.

It is something odd - it is meant to be used with multimode fiber, not the single mode fiber you purchased. I believe it is a mismatch in your setup.

We did test the more common $7 Cisco 10km 1310nm 1000BASE-LX variant which is actually cheaper despite the longer distance:
    https://www.fs.com/products/12622.html

You may consider buying two pairs of these, since it's not expensive anyway.

Ahhhhhh....maybe this could be the problem.
Can you resend the link to the Cisco 10km 1310nm again? Many thanks
I bought the 2km distance cos I thought 10km was overkill lol

The X1 has been on for the last 5 minutes and Network Error is still being displayed

In the previous post of my recommend setup here:
    https://www.audioshark.org/showthrea...l=1#post257031

Another SFP module from Amazon was suggested, and there are a few Lumin X1 users using it:

These are the ones I use for QNAP NAS to the QNAP switch: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These are the ones I use for the switch to the X1: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Certainly not the cheapest but they worked.

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

The CISCO switch arrived and I replaced the TP-Link switch.
The X1 was able to detect the network and all is working fine now

However, the NAS is still a problem.

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

Excellent news on the X1! What's up with the NAS?

  10. #160

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

The NAS still cannot be detected with SFP connection. Copper is ok

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

So can you see the SFP interface as one of the two or three interfaces in the QNAP configuration page? If you can see it, can you then assign a static I.P. to the SFP module? You said QNAP was remoting into your NAS or is that something coming up later?

They have checked and confirmed settings to be all ok.
They are asking me if they could test setting up virtual switch

Let me how how I can assign a static ip to the Adapter 3 on the NAS

Control Panel -----> Network and Virtual Switch ----> Go to the three vertical dots to the right of the adapter ------> Configure -----> Setup IPV4 ----> mine is 192.168.1.xx (set yours to something you can remember), subnet mask 255.255.255.255 (/24) and the gateway is the address of your router (192.168.1.1 in my case). Jumbo Frame is 1500.

If you can do that then I guess disconnect the copper and reconnect and try fiber.

Tried but Qfinder Pro still could not detect the NAS..... Very likely I bought the wrong SFP module (SMF/MMF GE-S-2) instead of the GE-L module
    https://www.fs.com/products/48928.html

    Fiber cable is SMF:
    https://www.fs.com/products/68296.html

CISCO switch is using SFP and my NAS is a SFP+ port. Anyway, to handshake these 2 devices with the right SFP modules?

Happy that my X1 is playing beautifully via fiber now....was out of action for the past week

  16. #166

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

After listening to the X1 on fiber for a couple of days, my 1st impressions are:
    1. More treble extensions
    2. Lack of bass extensions (more highs than lows)
    3. when played at louder volumes, overall SQ is cleaner but sharper
    4. SQ is more clinical

I will switch to copper to determine my preference

    X1 run-in almost 400 hrs ....

Keen to know your feedback after you switched to fiber.....

My X1 has been running non-stop for three weeks or around 504 hours and have never run it on copper having chosen fiber for any possible benefits of galvanic isolation from the network and because I like new technology. I also moved all of my home theater source units and AV processor to fiber as well just in case.

    Let us know your preference!

We roll tubes so now maybe it's time to roll SFPs. On a lighter note, I am beginning to get concerned that the fuse in the X1's power supply can be improved but, of course, I am saying this with a certain amount of sarcasm because I have never been able to hear the difference a fuse makes.

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

If it plays music normally then it is correct. As for different SFP module sounding different, a dealer helped demonstrate Lumin X1 with different SFP modules (against copper Ethernet) and different fiber. Different visitors liked the SQ from different SFP modules. I think 1310nm single mode SFP got more votes - I believe this is consistent with other subjective reports of non-Lumin fiber setup from another forum. A few people preferred copper Ethernet.

Just to confirm, you are using an SFP+ in both the CISCO switch and the QNAP NAS and appropriate fiber to connect the switch and the NAS? I may have been reading too deeply but the switch and the NAS should use the same SFPs (at least they do in my system).

The Cisco switch is SFP port and I am using SFP module.
The NAS port is SFP+ and I tried using SFP module and the NAS could not be detected
The X1 is using SFP module connected to the Cisco SFP port and is working fine

Does it mean that SFP+ port on the NAS can only handshake with a Switch that has a SFP+ port and not SFP port?

I don't know the answer to that only that I have like SFP modules on my setup. It's worth a try, IMHO, to put the same modules in the NAS and its port on the switch and see.

Just received it. Will test later and update here

Update: NAS still cannot be detected despite using 10km SFP modules on the Cisco and NAS SFP ports (NAS is a SFP+ port)

Looks like both NAS and Switch must have identical SFP or SFP+ ports. Proves that handshake not possible if one port is SFP and the other port is SFP+
I would have thought SFP+ port can support SFP modules

i have had the opposite experience with my fiber network... there are devices with SFP ports and devices with SFP+ ports; and SFP+ ports are backward compatible with SFP modules.

it is essential to assure compatibility across all components in the chain including the fiber cable. fwiw: i bought all the gear from the same manufacturer and confirmed ahead of time that everything was compatible.

I have used these in several older Dell Servers and they were easy to install and setup, and work perfectly. I added several of these to connect to a Ubiquiti 10gig aggregation switch and everything communicated with each other without issue and at the speeds expected.
Also I have used products from Gtek multiple times now and everything has been smooth and simple.

platform is much cheaper than Amazon

Thanks for the message! I'm glad to see and talk to our users and other visitors.

This year in AV Show we used a Lumin X1 with the setup in post #183, with music stored in a Lumin L1. It is directly connected to a pair of our Lumin (class AB) AMP in bridge mode via XLR balanced interconnect, driving Troy Audio speakers (made in USA) whom we partner with this year.

At one time someone played Michael Jackson - Beat It. With renewed controversy surrouding him, I wondered whether it'll drive people away or attract them to come in. Then all the seats in the room were taken.

Before the show we verified the Roon Core was running properly on the NAS we prepared for the show (in case any visitor asks about using Roon with Lumin). On the day of setup, the NAS died.

Ordered the parts and switched my X1 to optical connection (surprisingly easy, took less than 10 minutes). Sound wise, definitely hearing deeper into the recording already with little burn in. Totally worth trying, costs about as much as low end usb digital audio cable.

    Peter,

I have a 75' copper Ethernet cable run to my stereo component area. With all that copper Ethernet cable, would I improve the sound quality by using the optical port of the X1? Is there a difference in the sound quality in using a gigabit switch with a fibre port vs. the FMC method?

    Thanks,

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

Yes, it may sound different. Based on the feedback, there are more users preferring the optical network connection than those preferring copper Ethernet.

The X1 built-in SFP port is indeed better than the FMC, because it is driven by the high quality X1 LPS, and there is no need for the signal to go through another copper Ethernet cable (as in using a FMC).

For a sample configuration please refer to this:

Re: Lumin X1 Fiber Optic Network Discussions

A Lumin X1 user on whatsbestforum on X1 fiber networking: Lumin X1: Enabling an Even Simpler Yet Better Sounding System | What's Best Audio and Video Forum. The Best High End Audio Forum on the planet!
This system was already marvelous in sound, the best by far I've had in this room. But the combination of better vibration protection, purer powerlines, and the fibre optic connection between the switch and the Lumin moves the performance up to a level of naturalness and a freedom from distortion which I had to hear to believe. There is simultaneously an increased smoothness and transparency to the sound without any real detail being lost. What is lost is distortion which was adding just a bit of edge that was not really noticed until I heard its absence.

I did A/B the Lumin with a copper ethernet link, then with the optical link. That change in itself is a significant part of the transformation I'm hearing.

Changing from copper ethernet to the fibre optic connection between the switch and the Lumin X1 meant even less "grunge" in the background, blacker backgrounds, even less high frequency digital nasties, and a generally more open sound. This is true regardless of the quality of the program--it applies from low-bit-rate internet radio up through high-res programs from Tidal or Qobuz. Lumin and the reviewers who have commented on this type of connection's performance are correct. This is better yet than an ethernet connection, which itself was better than a single Wi-Fi link in the streaming connection.

I can heartily recommend that those of you who have a Lumin X1 (or another streamer with a fibre connection potential built in--are there any others?) try this right away. The money spent, at least in my system, was way out of proportion to the audible improvement. What was obviously already a top streamer before in terms of sound quality is now at another level entirely, qualitatively superior to anything I've previously heard in network streaming.

If I use the fiber optic connection, would having the Uptone Etherregen switch upstream of it provide any additional benefit? Apparently, it improves SQ for copper ethernet. What do you all think?
