Reply again with more update: Although the X1 uses a different connector from S1 / A1 / T1, as shown in the web site we plan to offer the new X1 power supply separately as an upgrade to S1 / A1 / T1. Although the S1 / A1 / T1 DC power connectors are different from X1, we will come up with a different DC cable that makes them compatible.

    More photos here:
    http://www.avbuzz.com/audio-video/201807/lumin-x1-a/

Note that the black LUMIN badge under the front panel of the X1 looks white in the photo, probably due to lighting and exposure. In reality it is black.

Here's a new model which uses FOUR ES9038PRO DAC chips (can easily translate in Chrome): http://www.kcsr.co.jp/detail_d2.html
Additional details here, also requiring translation: https://www.phileweb.com/news/audio/.../14/19860.html

The one with the most DACs must sound best!

Thanks, I knew about the first two, but was not aware of the others. The 4 DAC chip model looks interesting. For DAC that features a high DAC chip count, I recall Esoteric D-02X has 32 AK4490!

    Re: Lumin X1

I didn't really have time to listen to X1 that much (it's other people's jobs to listen critically, not mine). So it's a new discovery for me that X1 gives Lily Chan's voice from Purely SACD track #4 a jump in three dimensional quality, compared to S1 with volume matched. Perhaps that comes from the improved transparency and imaging that has been said before.

Re: Lumin X1 Flagship Roon Ready Network Player

This Lumin X1 seems to be a very good product, but I have a hard time to understand the real difference between a LUMIN streamer, and a simple streaming DAC like Brinkmann Nyquist, dcS Rossini, Merging NADAC player, Auralic VEGA G2, Ayre QX-5 twenty.... Lumin position itself away from those streaming DAC, but... isn't it the same animal at the end ?

Indeed, booth have a DAC included and booth need to be connected to a NAS (or USB HD in some cases) through ethernet for storage. Plus the streaming DAC can also be used as a Roon endpoint if the NAS has enough power to run Roon CORE.

Indeed many of these products are functionally similar. Differences include SQ, price, optical network, and other features like control point convenience, MQA (if you use Tidal), etc. If you use Roon, there's also the issue of how committed a manufacturer is for supporting Roon. Reading Roon forum you'll see certain manufacturers have major issue(s) that have not been solved for over a year. Check which version of RAAT they're using. Certain manufacturer(s) also promised features that have been delayed for 6 months or more.

Lumin cannot run Roon Core - please use an i5 / i7 computer for that. Running Roon Core on the DAC is against Roon philosophy to sound quality Rule #1:

thanks a lot for your answer. I understand that LUMIN cannot run Roon Core, but... can the LUMIN be a ROON Endpoint and allow us to choose (on the fly ? ) between ROON interface and Lumin iPAD app to play our music ?

Thank you so much, Mike, for the beta firmware... "Tic sound" still there when resampling non-gapeless tracks, but no more Lumin X1 when I'm in random playback. I appreciate it. A lot of "on my own" testing for a 15k unit, but I'm getting use to it.

Now, is this LPSU sounds normal or should I return it?

    Hi Vinci,

Glad that your "tic sound" situation has been improved.

I had a look at the video, I do realise when the camera is very close to the power supply, a buzz sound can be heard. From what I heard in the video, the sound is quite small and it should be related to the DC offset of the mains. If you have access to a power conditioner, you can try to connect the X1 through the power conditioner and see if the condition is improved.

By the way, Youtube was the only way to show it because od the Audioshark upload limit. I'm going to delete it soon. I got a "Shakti Stone" underneath the PSU, 2 or 3 inches under. If I remove it, the sound is louder.

My X1 LPSU is directly powered by a high end conditioner: Isotek Titan.

    Thanks for your help.

Fortunately, the vibration have no effect on the sound. The LPSU it quite warm, compared to all my other LPSUs. It appeared one or two weeks after plugging in.

Now that the adjustments have been made, and the people who have seen me share unrestrained criticism know me as someone very demanding and who has the nerve, here is my word to describe the new Lumin X1: Unbeatable. Living, moving, smooth but so much texture. Is it a living being. Its musicality is a rock that will not be beaten for a long time.

Oh, so the Lumin uses a control point UI very similar to the Esoteric Soundstream App. The downside of network playback on my Esoteric N-01 is that App. After a short while using it I always gravitate back to my Kaleidescape App and just SPDIF to my N-01.

More 3D. Better resolution. It’s definitely a step up over the S1.

The optical connection takes FOREVER to break in. 500+ hours.

    Re: Lumin X1

Mike and I listened together for a few hours on Saturday. I kept the X1 through Monday. As a result, I was able to do 5 listening sessions.

To me, the X1 provides a more natural and open musical presentation. This is specially true with voices - female and male. Also, I was able to hear more detail - cymbals, bells and the micro detail of the music are more clear. However, I would not call it analytical or dry, simply a bit more clarity than the S1. They are closer in the bottom end - both very dynamic and strong bottom end.

Is it worth the upgrade? I think so. However, the S1 is still a heck of a player (sounds terrific, looks good, easy to use and terrifically supported by the Lumin team). Lastly, I like it better than my Esoteric CD/SACD player.

    Wonderful review!

Peter, may I ask you something please?
It seems the DAC holds its own in the company of some of the world's best DACs.
So I suppose this can be your only DAC in a high end stereo system.
Yet I see so little digital inputs.
    Or am I mistaken?
(I see only USB, no optical or RCA).

    Re: Lumin X1

Other than network input, there is no other digital audio input. Lumin X1 USB port can be used to output audio to another DAC, but it cannot be used as a USB audio input.

Peter, thank you for your answer.
Forgive me, I'm not very tech savvy in this matter.
Can the network input still be used to process for example a digital signal from a cable TV box?

    Re: Lumin X1

    Sorry, no.

Although you can find other brands of DAC (e.g. Esoteric N-01 / N-05) that have digital audio input for connecting to a cable TV box for 2-channel output, ideally the cable TV box should be connected to an AV receiver for 5.1 channel output.

Thank you for your answer Peter.
TV here is mostly stereo, so when we connect the cable box to our current DAC, it sounds better than through our surround processor.

    Re: Lumin X1

I am a huge Lumin fan and an even bigger Peter fan. But as someone whose music space is also an A/V space, TBH, the lack of a Lumin optical in was one of the reasons I switched to MSB. From time to time I like watching music videos on YouTube and I need an optical in for that.

Re: Lumin X1 Flagship Roon Ready Network Player

For viewings, I solved the problem with a dedicated DAC (Chord 2Qute - not expensive), using a regular optic cable from my TV box to my DAC for bridging, keeping out electrical pollutants coming from my home cinema circuit devices.

In my opinion, this is the beauty of a streamer like Lumin X1: The source is inside, ensuring the best technical integration to the internal DAC. Furthermore, if you chose the optical network input, the network signal is by definition electrically isolated.
