    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

So...I plugged in and set up the P1 last night. Set-up, unlike the Linn (which has NO manual...what the hey?), was easy-peasy. As easy as setting up an Aurender, which is about as easy at it gets. 👌

Got my Qobuz subscription entered and linked into the Lumin app, and also added as a zone to my Roon Core. I'll also install MinimServer per Lumin's recommendations as the best music server to use but that'll no doubt take some time to implement.

It's going to take a number of hours to get this bad boy fully burned in, but even using Roon to get things going, I am already WAY impressed.

The P1 is VERY transparent, with excellent clarity and it's also very, very quiet. Inner detail is outstanding.

More to come, but listening to the P1 is already a pleasure.

Go ahead, twist my arm! 😜

Yeah, I'm already getting that impression, Mike! And...its only got like 10 hours of burn-in time on it (let it run O/N with the Constellation turned off...).

Man, it sure is quiet and transparent. Whoa.

Not at all surprised. I've been very happy with every piece of Lumin gear I've had. X1, M1, L1 being current. U1 past.

I definitely recommend the L1 for NAS/music library. Does it sound better than Minim running on something like Synology/QNAP? (I have both) I don't really know. It seems to, to me, direct-connected via ethernet to the X1. But rather than get into endless arguments over whether it should or not I'll just concede it could be my imagination. Rather, what I truly love about it is the simplicity. Copy your music to it, plug it in, and it will appear to you P1, that's it. Minim is a little bit of a pia, imo. Not horrible but, meh.

But did you go fiber in?

Yeah, I'm going to have to see if I configure MinimServer on my Mac Mini server as I'm told it sounds the best, but I am not looking forward to it as it seems it will be a PITA. That being said, I woudn't mind having an L1 music server.

And, I wouldn't trying the amp out, either.

And yes, J, going straight into the P1 with OM-1 specification fiber from the Roon Core via the OpticalModule in the spare bedroom. Everything there powered using Shunyata V14D digital NR-specific PCs and the P1 in the main rack is powered by the amazing Shunyata QR-s power cord powered by an Everest.

So, needless to say, this digital streaming/DAC setup is really quiet. Like REALLY quiet.

So...it sounds pretty d*mn good, even with like...12 hours on it, total. I think it's better than the $40K Linn, even with just 12 hours on it. It's transparency and inner detail is just exceptional. 👌

I feel like I need to up my game on things like power distro. What I have isn't terrible but what you describe I'll guess would be better. I'll take a look at those power cords first. I have the Ayre Lx-5e for power now, and probably the Shunyata is better (the Venom v6 looks interesting), but those are so much more $$ than that Ayre. Maybe I'd do a dedicated circuit and better outlet at some point too, I don't think that would be big $.

I see an etherregen in my future but when I can eventually find one used.

Umm...yes, it would. Power is....foundational. It's more important than speaker cables or IC's.

You need to look at it as a complete system. My recommendation would be to go lower on the power cable specification (for, example, get all Delta NRv2 instead of a 1 or 2 Alpha NRv2) and also get the Shunyata Venom V16 power distribution at the same time, and use the two together because together, they comprise a...system. If you can't afford all Delta NRv2, then get Venom NRv2 and a Venom V16. It's important to have noise-reducing PCs on ALL the components, rather than 1 or 2 more expensive PCs on one or two components. That does not solve the foundational problems.

A dedicated line is all well and good, but a dedicated line will not solve the problem of having EMI and RF on the Romex wiring inside the walls of your home....

    Watch this video....
Shunyata Research Venom 14 Digital power cord demonstration - YouTube

Noise is...pervasive, persistent, and pernicious. You have to get rid of all of it, it doesn't work to just eliminate in one place because AC goes into component power supplies, and...back out, this time with yet more noise from the full-wave bridge rectifiers from the power supplies in the components.

It goes...both ways! Not one way, both ways. That is why it is called alternating current! Doh! 😜

As such, ya gotta deal with it...systematically. Just as I've described above.

This is why you use a Shunyata power distributor, in addition to providing maximal current for DTCD, you need it for noise coming IN to the system from the AC mains, and Shunyata NR power cords on the components...to keep noise from coming back out of those components' internal power supplies, only to be distributed to gear like...source components. Which...you DO NOT want.

It's designed to be a system for very sound reasons, no pun intended.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

Makes sense. I may do it in pieces for financial reasons, but I get that it all needs to be done.

Fortunately I only have 3 components needing PCs - the amp, the X1 and the Ayre. Today I have Transparent MM2 something-or-other (Premium Powerlink maybe?) on the Ayre and the amp, and Shunyata something (digital-something iirc) on the X1.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

So...those of you that have a Shunyata Everest or Denali power distributor, or similar (Sigma S12, Alpha A12, Venom V16, etc) and a Lumin P1....for goodness sakes, connect a Shunyata CGC ground cable from the ground terminal on the Lumin to one of the ground posts of the Shunyata GP-NR (Ground-Plane Noise Reduction) system.

Presentation has an apparent ~2 dB increase in "perceived loudness", with concomitantly more quiet background, and is more "relaxed" and organic-sounding, as Hans Beekhuizen says. And, the inner detail and refinement is even better.

    Wow....

If you've got Shunyata power distributors, fer crisssakes, use the GP-NR system on them....😎

    Not a "subtle" improvement. 👌

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

So, I've had the Lumin P1 playing continuously last coupla three days, even when the wonderful Constellation Inpiration integrated is turned off, and I estimate the Lumin P1 has about 60 hours on it at this point. And....it is sounding really wonderful, even at this fairly early point. My guess is it will continue to improve with more hours, and I'll cycle it off for a spell tomorrow to help with forming the caps, but so far...I am very impressed. It has superb transparency, clarity, inner detail, a natural, lovely, tonal palette and excellent rendition of timbre and texture, along with a spacious and wide soundstage (wider than the Linn, for example). And like the excellent Aurender N20 streamer/server, the P1's stereo image has excellent 3-dimensionality and "palpability" to the instrumental and vocal "voices"; there's weight and body to the images and vocals.

Peter has been helpful for arranging for me to get the L1 music server as well, so I'll add that in to the mix when it gets here.

I haven't heard all that many "all-in-one" 1-box streamer/DAC/preamp combos, most notably the Linn Klimax DSM/3, and the P1 fully holds its own with the Linn on pretty much every front, and actually presents a wider soundstage. And for 1/4 the price.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

    Thanks for the report!

To say a few words about L1, it is a user-friendly zero-configuration fanless library device that matches the aesthetics of the Lumin product line. To put music files in the L1, simply use it as a USB HDD to be connected to a computer. Once the USB cable is disconnected, it turns itself into a network library to be selectable from Lumin app (after the automatic boot up scan is completed). This avoids the complexity involved with NAS.

Usually when you use MinimServer or any NAS DLNA media server, Lumin app needs to take time to analyze the library and build its internal database for app use. With the L1, this app-database is prebuilt by L1 as part of its boot up automatic scanning process, so the app loading of L1 is almost instantaneous. This becomes more advantageous when you have multiple control devices running Lumin app (iPad, iPhone, Android).

Although it was not designed to enhance the SQ, some users report improved SQ from the fanless L1 over a conventional NAS (with fan). In addition to the fanless design, its single purpose dedicated to music library may also be a contributing factor.

The other thing that’s nice about the L1 is you can plug it directly into your copper ethernet port, eliminating other intermediary network devices and using a very short cable run, while not worrying about losing access to other, non-audio NAS-stored files. As long as you’re fiber-in to the P1 of course. I think being purpose-built, fanless, and direct-connected probably do add up to better SQ. And as Peter said, “it just works”.

Fwiw, I replaced the HDD with a SDD for one less set of moving parts and whatever signal contamination that might have generated, although I did it more for less things to break down and longevity than anything.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

Another thumbs up for the L1 here for all the reasons listed above. It does sound better, in my system anyway, than minimserver via my Synology NAS. Is it a huge difference? No, but it is noticeable and to an obsessive compulsive audiophile like me, it's important. What I notice most is a slightly lower noise floor i.e. I can hear a little more inner detail in whatever I'm listening to. There's also a slight edge up high (most noticeable on anything with a high range such as vocals or violins) via my NAS that is absent on the L1. Music seems a little smoother with a slightly better sense of flow, forward momentum or whatever you want to call it. Hard to find the right words sometimes. Again, not a OMG jaw dropping difference but a worthwhile one I think. I suspect this is likely due to the lack of other programs and processes running on the L1 compared the NAS. Who knows.

However, it gets really funky when you add a LPS on the L1. Along with the Lumin app I also use Roon via a Fidelizer Nimitra server with its matching Nikola LPS. I swapped out the L1's SMPS for the Nikola (both rated at 12V) and again noted another small but worthwhile uptick in musicality. Music had a bit more weight down low, was a little more dynamic i.e. the graduations between quiet and loud in a piece of music was more life-like. Transient fidelity was another improvement. An example would be the attack and decay on hard percussive sounds, say flamenco played on an acoustic guitar was notably sharper. Have to mention the NAS also sounds better with a LPS than the standard SMPS. I'm finding swapping out all SMPS in my system including router & switch also seem to reap some sonic benefit to one degree or another. I wish it wasn't true 'cause my wallet is taking a beating But compared to the cost of my X1, it's not that unreasonable. It seems the better the signal I can send to it, the better the X1 can reveal the beauty of my music collection.

It's a difficult choice these days as while I love the flexibility of Roon with my file based music, I prefer the sound quality of the L1 with the Lumin app. Btw, streamed music from Qobuz/Tidal also sounds better through the Lumin than my Roon server. Around here, it's Roon for casual listening and Lumin for serious late night sessions especially with headphones.

Puma Cat, I think you're going to like the L1

    Cheers
    Paul

Good quality linear power supplies are key with respect to devices used in high-end audio systems that reside fully in the digital domain, e.g. music servers, switches, clocks, streamers, network bridges, etc. The reason is, as I've described previously, is that SMPS put high-source leakage impedance leakage current (which is a class of AC current) onto the ground planes of these devices. This "noise" on the ground plane causes a phenemenon known as threshold jitter, which impacts timing and has an audible effect on the perceived quality of music (remember, the perception of music is a construct of the brain; all the speakers are doing is pressurizing the air...), as our brains are exquisitely sensitive to timing errors.

Once again, I would refer folks to this paper by professional Ethernet engineer and audio designer, John Swenson, who designed the EtherREGEN and Rendu series of network bridges, and who knows more about this domain than any of us: shorturl.at/otIP9

If you really want to understand what is going on, you really need to read that white paper.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

I want to throw in my two cents here.
I bought a Lumin P1 from Mike at Suncoast Audio about two weeks ago. It replaces the DAC/streamer of my Boulder 866 which I found lacking from a user standpoint. The 866 had replaced a Lumin T2.
I let the P1 play for a week while I was out of town and have now been listening for about a week.
The improvement is shockingly good. I expected it to sound better but not to such a degree. The noise floor is much lower, which lets you hear things you didn’t hear before. Same with separation of instruments- big improvement. Bass is also better. Yet the P1 retains an organic, easy sound. And the remote- a joy to look at, hold and use. The operation of the unit is seamless.
A funny story- I had one quibble with the P1- the volume up/down on the remote only worked in single presses, not continuously. Today a little birdie texted me (thank you Mike) to install the latest update. When I turned the P1 on, it asked me if I wanted to install the latest update. After I said yes, it took about two minutes. And guess what- the volume control operation is fixed. Lumin is truly a first rate company and very good at what they do.

After I said yes, it took about two minutes. And guess what- the volume control operation is fixed. Lumin is truly a first rate company and very good at what they do.
    Hi Dylan,
Thanks for sharing your experiences. I fully agree with your findings. The noise floor is really low, and as such, the P1 has superb transparency, clarity, and inner detail. It also has a very fine rendition of the subtleties of tone and timbre.

"Yet the P1 retains an organic, easy sound."

Yes, agreed 100%. Hans Beekhuizen would use the term, "relaxed", here. And, he'd be right.

With respect to your experience of being able to download an update for the remote, I'm not surprised at all. It's been very clear since I got in, installed, and starting using the P1, that Lumin thinks things through very thoroughly, and then, executes at a high level.

Absolutely, 100%, agree. Also, Peter's knowledge and domain expertise are first-class, also. Moreover, Peter arranged for Lumin to get an L1 for me to use in conjunction with the P1 review for TAS. 👍

I'm super impressed with Lumin...these guys have got it...goin' on.

What X1 has which the P1 lacks in term of design/hardware/functions and in term of performance/sound quality?

I'm not sure what your question is exactly as it's worded unclearly.

The X1 is a network music player, including DAC functionality. The P1 is that as well as a stereo preamplifier.

As for comparing the sound quality between them, I can't say as I have not heard the X1. The P1 is superb.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

I notice that some differences in the hardware: the X1 has different DAC, solid chassis, and outboard power supply while the P1 has an internal power supply. The P1 also possesses some features from the X1 to include optical networking, Femto clock, and Lundah transformers. My question is that is there any technology which is only reserved for the flagship X1, and is not implemented in the P1?

They're different products with different features and functionality and different intended use-cases, so I'm not sure I would classify one as a "flagship".

Your best would be to ask Peter with respect to any "technology" that is in the X1 that is not in the P1.

Not sure what you mean by "solid chassis".

    Cheers.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

Someone bring their P1 over and we'll compare!

Not sure if it's as simple as, if you don't need pre-amp functions or multiple inputs, the X1 seems to fit the bill. If you do have those needs or may down the road, then it's the P1.

Pricewise the X1 is still more $, and offers "less" functions and a separate power supply so I think it stands to reason there could be some engineering advantages. Whether those manifest in superior SQ, I tend to doubt it, at least beyond what most of us would discern.

Functionally, P1 (using dual ES9028PRO) is an X1 (using dual ES9038PRO) with added conventionl analog and digital inputs (so it can be used with a CD transport or TV), and the linear power supply placed inside. The remote is standard for P1 but an optional purchase for X1.

P1 is priced lower than the X1. So P1 is a great value.

    Re: Lumin P-1 arrives tomorrow

    Update regarding the Lumin P1...

I've been racking up more and more hours on the Lumin P1, and I continue to be more and more impressed with it. I estimate I've got 100 or so hours of burn-in on it, as i sometimes leave it on overnight, with the integrated amp powered off, but the P1 on with music files running through it.

I calculated the other day that by using the P1 with a direct fiber optical l connection, I was able to eliminate a significant number of "devices" from the streaming reproduction chain: no need for an Ethernet switch in the main rack, no need for an LPS for that Ethernet switch, no need for a network bridge, so no need LPS for the network bridge, AND...no need for power cords for those power supplies, AND... no need for an Ethernet cable or a USB cable. That’s…six, count 'em six, fewer “components” overall in the signal path from music server to DAC.

Just yesterday I put all the "networked music server" components onto a Shunyata PS10 power distributor in the "remote music server room", and that brought about a significant increase in audio quality. Things have come a long way since the venerable little Hydra 4.

Anyhoo...the P1 continues to impress me with it's performance for any and all high-end audiophile attributes that we tend to "geek out" about.

More to the point, it just makes MUSIC, and in a most wonderful way, indeed.

Paired with the luscious Constellation Inspiration integrated amp, which I'm still listening to as my dual-mono power supplies for my First Sound preamp only arrived just today after being upgraded with Shunyata's latest CCI-X noise filters, this combination makes for an exceedingly musical "perfect pairing", if you ask me.

More later, count on it, but in the meantime, I'm goin' back to listening to some pretty wonderful music. 😻

    Hi Jim,

I had the possibility to "live" with and test the P1 for nearly 3 months in my system. I was also greatly impressed by the overall performance of the Lumin. I also exchanged with the local importer about the design differences between P1 and X1.

For me the X1 still remains the absolute reference point due to its no-compromise design: billed chassis (important for HF/RF shielding) and even more important for his external XP power supply. Lumin says that the integrated power supply of the P1 is "designed similar" to the one of the X1. However, I'm not sure what that means... (and I did not open the power supply in the P1).

The difference in the used DAC chips 9038 vs. 9028 is soundwise imho less crucial (the difference in actual cost should be absolutely negligible for a 10.000 USD unit). Even the Crystek ("Fremto") clocks used in both unis are just "ok" but not great, but what really counts is the design concept and the whole package - and not single parts (e.g. you can find the same DAC chip and clocks in DACs costing much less than 2000 USD).

I was also happy that Lumin decided to take over the optical input from the X1. In my system with two cascaded switches, connected via an optical cable, it further blackend the background when using to optical connection to the Lumin.

The P1 is a great product and I really enjoyed it in my system. However, if you have the money I can only recommend to invest in a separate analoge pre-amplifer which gives instruments more body and better separation. But this is not Lumin P1 specific, as it is also the case with my TAD D1000 MK2 player-DAC.

    Cheers

Puma Cat , if i remember correct then my Lumin X1 needed around 500 hours before being stable. When i first listened to it i was shocked how bad it sounded when i compared it to my memory of a broken in Lumin X1. Also the updates brought really good bonuses to the sound. I do think that Lumin is really under rated...i also just recently switched to fiber and waouu that is really good , and now there is no black , but only the instruments and performers.
But fiber also puts my interest into improvements in the conversion from ethernet to fiber unit...can it be done even better ?

Don't convert. Find a switch like SoTM that has a fiber transceiver (SFP) port, and go fiber all the way. I use a Meraki today but keeping an eye out for a SoTM.

My X1 sounded great right from the beginning. Better than the S1 it replaced, which also sounded excellent.

Well . i think you eventually will have to convert from ethernet to fiber at one point....i just take ethernet directly from my router to the TP link MC220L and then fiber from there directly into Lumin X1.

I find the Ethernet > Fiber in my system since replacing the speakers and amp. I’ve been using fiber since day 1 with X1 and was the main reason why I opted to get a unit that supports it.

Yes, there is a lot to be said for being able to run fiber straight into the "streamer" or streamer/DAC.

If you are using a FMC, you can try either giving it a LPS or replacing the FMC by a SFP switch.

The cheapest SFP switch range from Trendnet (there are multiple successful reports, but one report of incompatibility), Cisco SFP (not SFP+ ) switches all the way to the higher priced SOtM switch.

    +1

I do also use 2 cascaded Meraki Switches with Startech.com SFP modules and fiber connection in between. The first switch is connected to the router via ethernet and an galvanic network isolator and connects all other devices of my living room. By using the fiber connection to the second switch in the listening room, I keep my audio setup isolated from any RF-noise from the router or the first switch.

When I used the P1, I connected it via a short fiber cable to the second switch which was easy to do and costwise 2 good SFPs + a good fiber vable does not cost more than a decent Ethernet cable.

I also found that at the beginning the P1 sounded a bit harsh and digital. The unit considerably improved over the following weeks and the digital harshness completely disappeard.

Yes, that's par for the course for components. Digital components, in particular, can take a couple hundred hours or more to burn-in. A Fidata server I did a review on last year needed a minimum 500 hours.

Same applies to most cables, as well. Plus cables need time to settle, even if burned in, if they've been moved or re-positioned, or worse yet, shipped on a logistics truck.

The local Lumin importer mailed me that, according to them, burn-in is more than 200 hours for the P1. From my personal experience this seems quite realisctic.

    Exactly the opposite.
Tried two different SFP transceivers; Finistar and gtek both with Corning glass. One day decided to try Ethernet and just noticed more presence, 3D, sparkle and detail and just overall more ease to the system. Each time I switch to fiber the system sounds choked now with just Ethernet. Shrug.

It was mentioned that adding a ether regen might help but it’s just another power cord, power socket and possibly another LPS that I dont have at the moment. I love tweaks but I do like less in the chain.

I’ll revisit again and ping more folks offline and not derail this thread.

    Hi Lumin friends!

John Atkinson has reviewed the P1 in the latest issue of Stereophile.

I fully agree with his review - also concerning the AES-connection vs. network (in my review I connected my TAD D1000 MKII via AES to Lumin).

    Kind regards

A new firmware is released for Lumin P1 - it is now possible to change to digital or analog input (using the Lumin IR remote) even if the network cable is disconnected (with "Network Error" displayed if not in input mode).
