    Leedh Processing Volume free upgrade

Leedh Processing Volume is now a free upgrade for Lumin product line in Firmware 13. (This feature alone costs EUR5000 from another manufacturer.)

    Lumin, Leedh’ing the way

Leedh Processing comes to all LUMIN players

Leedh Processing is an innovative new digital volume adjustment algorithm that eliminates rounding errors and modifies the digital signal amplitude exactly, without any changes to its shape and free from any kind of information loss.

We are very excited to announce that with LUMIN firmware v13, all LUMIN users now have the option to use (at no additional cost) Leedh Processing Volume Control instead of the default processing algorithm.

WOW!! Read the article. Appears to be a revolutionary technology. Kudos to Lumin as an early exploiter at no additional charge.

That's awesome news! Love the addition I requested a few months ago with setting Volume %!

I like how it was not approved in the thread below...lol

It sounds like this Leedh technology is when you don't use a preamps with the X1. Is that correct?

I think that's going to be an interesting thing to test. Certainly that review by Joël Chevassus suggests that he found that to be the case in his system.
If LUMIN in your only source, it makes sense to give it a go!

I'd be really interested in your findings.

Forgive my dumbness. I have a bryston BP26 Lumin Mini and a Bryston BDA3. Do I still use this Leedh or turn it off And just use my pre for volume control? I have had a electrical issue so I’ve been off line for a few weeks and haven’t updated. Thanks I don’t understand what this does.

The normal way to use LUMIN in this setup is to leave volume at 100% in the LUMIN App. This way there is no volume processing done of any kind.
This was true before and after firmware v13.

You don't need to turn it off.

Hi, I am using a U1 mini, connected via USB to an Oppo 205 as dac. I do not get the Lumin volume control working via the app (Android). Does it not function via USB of is something wrong?
Nb. Its not a big deal as I do not really need the volume control but still like to know if my Lumin is functioning as it should.

Please clarify what do you mean by the volume not working - after you've decreased the volume, it still has the same loudness? Or after you've adjusted the volume, there is no sound?

If you experience difficulty with the app not allowing to change the volume, after you've enabled the volume control and Leedh in Lumin app, you may use Linn Kazoo for playback and volume change.

    Re: Lumin, Leedh’ing the way

So, having a preamp this feature is not working at all?
Or, I can set my preamp for example to "middle.position" and then I can use the Leedh volume control?

    Thanks.

Peter, Thank You for making this happen!

Putting together a second system just became far more affordable.

I have a late-90's vintage Wadia CD player that for years was connected directly to my power amp. There are 4 internal switches that you use to change the output voltage. I found the setting that worked best in my room and allowed the Wadia's volume control to operate in the top ¼ or so. Sounded great.

Now this Leedh volume control will allow a Lumin to go directly to a power amp as well. Even better, though - adjusting the max. volume is done right in the app, no need to open the unit up. Very slick! And from what I've been reading, it appears that there won't be any sound degradation at all no matter what the volume.

This could be a SERIOUS game-changer.

Good point, Calloway. I suppose those Lumins are probably going straight to power amps in more cases than I would have thought.

Looking forward to hearing more impressions of the Leedh sound difference from users with that setup.

Yes. You can turn down the Lumin volume, then set the preamp to unity gain position. If it's not clear what position is unity gain, see if you can determine that experimentally (with care).

Please use the latest Lumin app to disable Volume Control, then enable it again. Make sure Custom Re-sampling is turned off.

When playing music from the Lumin app playlist, reduce volume should cause the U1 MINI USB output volume to be reduced.

Alternatively, you can also try Linn Kazoo app for volume adjustment.

You can choose whether to use it or not.

Scenario 1: You set LUMIN T2 volume to 100%. Use your pre-amp volume. This would completely ignore the new feature - which is fine.

Scenario 2: You adjust volume with LUMIN, set your pre-amp to unity gain (you could probably find out from the manufacturer what this is) and leave it there. In this case you would be using the new Leedh Volume Control in LUMIN.

Scenario 3: You connect LUMIN T2 directly to your power amp, bypassing the pre-amp. In this case you would be using the new Leedh Volume Control in LUMIN.

So it really depends on how much you want to experiment or if you are happy with the status quo.

Edit: Although I see you have multiple sources, which makes Option 2 a little unnatural (resetting the pre-amp volume whenever listening to LUMIN) and Option 3 very limiting.

    Re: Lumin, Leedh’ing the way

If you would like to try Scenario 2, enable the Lumin Volume Control and Leedh Processing Volume, decrease the Lumin app volume first. Then on the Music First Audio Baby Reference V2, increase the volume to 0dB.

Most of the volume range in Lumin T2 has roughly 0.5dB step. Depending on which variant of the preamp you purchased, you may have 2dB step in your preamp. If this is true, each attenuation step in preamp corresponds to 4 steps in Lumin T2. You may also use a free sound meter app on smartphone to make sure the volume level between the preamp volume (with Lumin volume set to 100) and the Lumin volume (with preamp volume set to 0dB) is similar for A/B testing of SQ.

From a historical perspective, probably somewhere around the middle. From what I can tell, the previous top of the line S1 was announced 2014. The X1 was announced 2018. Lumin might choose to come out with a new top at a higher price and continue to sell the X1 as a current model, somewhat like they did with the A1. From that perspective you might think of it more toward the front of a product cycle with a long tail. Enhancements like Leedh tend to lead one in the direction of a longer life cycle.

I suspect that whatever replaces the X1 will only be marginally better. The X1 is only slightly, but obviously, better than the S1, so it seems we are nearing the top of digital reproduction.

X1 will remain to be our flagship for a long time. I guess it would be like this for a longer time than the period when S1 was our flagship.

We may already have the best ES9038PRO design in the market, since there are X1 customers who also have and compared X1 with other ES9038PRO DAC from famous brands.

By the way, we're not doing a 0.1 hardware version increment and call it a new flagship.

If you're using Lumin A1 (or T1 or S1 or X1) connecting both XLR and RCA simultaneously will degrade the sound quality.

In the Lumin app About function of U1 MINI, you can tap and hold the Factory Reset. Please try it. On boot up, enable volume control again, and check the volume function.

Are you using the USB Output of U1 MINI, without any other output connected?

Does pause in Lumin app work?

Please post a screen capture of the Lumin app About of U1 MINI.

First of all, thanks for your support!
I did the factory reset and enabled volume control again. Still no volume control via USB out (Oppo UDP 205 connected on Lumin U1 Minu USB 1). I also tried via coax connection, and hey, Lumin connected via coax and now the volume control does work. Back to USB and volume control does not work again. Any other ideas?

    - yes only one output connected at the same time
    - song pause does work, mute does not via USB out (it does via coax)
    - screen caps;

Earlier I tested volume controlled USB output to be working in my test setup, and another user also confirmed it to be working for him. So that's very odd.

Which firmware of UDP-205 USB DAC are you running? In UDP-205: Setup Menu and then Select the "Device Setup-> Firmware Information->DAC Version".

You are not playing MQA music, are you? MQA requires the DAC to process the volume, so the U1 MINI as a certified MQA transport will leave the digital stream alone when a USB MQA DAC is detected.

LUMIN - Audiophile Network Music Player - Page 100 - Networking, Networked Audio, and Streaming - Audiophile Style
In my test I was playing back vinyl that had been ripped at 24/382 with an RME ADI-2 Pro ADC. I first played them in my normal mode (Lumin [A1] - TRL Dude Pre - TRL Samson amps - Green Mountain Audio C-3 HX). Then I re-cabled to remove the TRL Dude Pre. All the cabling was Silent Source. I need to do more testing but my initial reaction was that there was more clarity and detail and also more body to the instuments and more dynamics with no apparent trade-offs so far (other than being limited to one source input.).

Scenario 2: You adjust volume with LUMIN, set your pre-amp to unity gain (you could probably find out from the manufacturer what this is) and leave it there. In this case you would be using the new Leedh Volume Control in LUMIN.
..you mean to adjust volume with the "circle control", the master one?
Then let to "ON" both controls in option (APP) : volume control and Leedh processing volume?
In this case the LEEDH is running?

Why you wrote: "if the Lumin volume is set to 100 LEEDH will be not running?

    Lumin, Leedh’ing the way

Peter, would there be any way to use a Bluetooth Remote to control the volume on the Lumin’s? The one thing I didn’t care for when I paired the X1 and amp was having to use the volume control in the app. I have to grab the iPad, unlock it, click on Roon, wait for it to do it’s thing, then adjust the volume. By then, I’ve been blasted by 20 seconds of highly compressed music. I’m a preamp kind of guy, but with a Bluetooth Remote (the kind they sell on Amazon), perhaps it could work.

    Thoughts?

    Yes and Yes.

Leedh is a digital volume attenuation algorithm. At max volume there is no need to attenuate, and therefore no need to use any digital volume algorithm.

I'll relay your suggestion to our team, but iPad has always been the remote for Lumin.

Thanks. iPad is clunky. I would suggest a Bluetooth option at least. You can buy a nice Bluetooth remote on Amazon for $20.
