    Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

Before reading further, please understand that replacing any component inside the L1 may void the warranty. Lumin cannot assure the correct functioning of L1 if not used with the original HDD. Any L1 to be shipped back for warranty repair purpose must contain the original HDD.

The below information is FYI, and I cannot recommend any user to replace the HDD by themselves.

I've investigated the requests of changing the L1 HDD to something larger such as 4TB or 5TB HDD.

Previously I've said that Lumin L1 is limited to 10mm thick HDD. Turns out this limitation only applied to the very first batch of L1 1TB units. Newer shipments, and all those L1 2TB units, have slightly different mounts to accommodate 15mm thick drives, so 2.5" 15mm 4TB and 2.5" 15mm 5TB internal SATA HDD drives also fit.

Opening up the L1 requires three different screwdrivers. When replacing the HDD, please observe if there is any gap between the metal plate and the HDD electronics. If the gap is too little, there is a slight risk of short circuit - in this case, put something non-conductive in between (e.g. folded paper).

One a HDD is replaced, it needs to be formatted as follows:

    PROCEDURE TO FORMAT LUMIN L1
    =====================

Warning: All music or data file on the L1 will be lost after performing this format procedure.
Before performing this procedure please back up all your music files from the L1.

    1. If the drive is not brand new, connect L1 to a computer via USB to delete _ALL_ the partitions in the drive (using Disk Management if on Windows platform)
    2. Connect the L1 network cable
    3. Disconnect L1 USB
    4. Boot up L1 and wait until the RED LED flashes
    5. Hold the power button for 6 seconds

After the format completes, it will boot up again and appears in Lumin app - this may require killing the app and restarting it.

With a <=2TB HDD inside, it will be formatted as FAT32. With a >2TB HDD inside, the drive will be formatted as NTFS, which can be written to using Windows PC. For Mac users, they will have to purchase a third party NTFS software from Paragon or Tuxera, or use a free software which is not as easy. (Do not use command line to enable the disabled NTFS writing function from Mac OS - it really is not meant to be used.)

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

Question - will Lumin ever consider putting bigger hard drives in the L1 on its own? Can one put multiple L-1s (e.g. via a switch) connected to the router and will the Lumin App integrate everything? For me, the 2TB storage is just way too small (probably have over 5TB of music files).

Peter - A great new product opportunity for Lumin - the L2! Double the capacity to 4TB. I would certainly get one, maybe two. I've been so happy with the L1 that I have no interest in messing around with other solutions to store my digital music.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

Multiple L1 can be used on the same network. Each L1 can be renamed so they can be identified properly. However, using Lumin app album view and search is restricted to one library at one time only. Lumin app cannot integrate information from multiple libraries.

For a music collection much larger than 5TB, consider using Roon running on i7 Windows PC with 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD for database and HDD for music.

I think that would be a great product as well. Right now I have no interest in Roon (I don't really need the extra stuff playing music - if I want to know something about an artist I usually have my iPhone right there and it is a quick look-up and not that often). I'm fine with my NAS and I use it for multiple back-up systems with JRiver. If I can get the storage I need from a product like an L2 that meets my needs, I'd buy it.

I would think that offering an upgraded Lumin L1 with higher capacity would make it easier to keep people in the Lumin ecosystem. Moving up to higher level Lumin hardware might be more appealing than trying another brand if the end user already has an L1 system that is plug and play with another model of Lumin hardware.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

I'd be all about a higher capacity L1, especially since using one can give an incremental step (possibly) up in performance, from what I've read, here on Audioshark, if I recall correctly.
I actually kind of expected one to come to market, by now, to tell the truth.

I understand - I keep buying and doing audio and non-audio things and have more and more that I fall behind in listening. However, when one has big files like lots of DSD files, those take up space. That's one reason (although probably not the main one) I likely won't even have hi-rez in the car as it just takes up too much space

    Hi Peter.
I wonder what the reason is that you can not see the L1 hard disk in the network, the way I see the disk in my Melco, or saw the Synology disk.
This was very comfortable to copy files

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

I agree that having SMB service for network file system browsing and copy is more convenient. The rationale for its omission was that SMB is a standard feature of NAS, while L1 was designed to be a zero-configuration alternative to NAS, such that it is easy to use with the least amount of required computer knowledge. (1) USB copy was seen as the simplest way, and it was thought those who needed SMB service can just use a NAS with MinimServer instead. (2) L1 was designed to run the absolute minimum processes, not unlike the concept of Audiophile Optimizer for Windows - this is part of the reason why some users have reported better SQ from L1 than from NAS.

Yeah - It's a fine line, but I gotta admit.. SMB in that L1 would make it an auto win for me in terms of looks, performance, and consistency.

Interesting. Surely file sharing should degrade the sound. In the Melco there is the option of deactivating file sharing and the sound really improves. When you have to copy files, activate the option, when you have finished the deactivate.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

Upgraded my Lumin L1 from 2TB to 4TB today. Process was not difficult and now I can store all my DSD and HiRes files on the Lumin L1 and still have 1.25TB left! I bought a new Seagate 4TB External drive off Amazon for $94.99 and removed the drive from the case. Cheaper than buying a standalone internal drive. Cheap upgrade!

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

It's worthwhile to mention that, at this time, Lumin products support FAT32 and NTFS only.

To use L1 with a >2TB HDD, NTFS file system is used - that works normally with Windows. To use Mac OS, however, a $19.95 NTFS driver software needs to be purchased because Mac OS does not support NTFS.

(I'll see if we can address this limitation such that Mac OS users with large HDD no longer need to rely on an additional paid software - but no promises at this point.)

I know the 1TB Lumin drives can't handle a thicker drive but the SSD you are looking at should be fine since I believe it is only 7mm thick. Hopefully Peter Lei will chime in.

    By the way, the Micron 2TB SSD is $321.00 at Amazon - Micron 1100 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 2.5-inch MTFDDAK2T0TBN-1AR1ZABYY.

Yes a SSD can be put inside, especially since it's a 7mm drive. Although I expect it will work, and I think we have user(s) who've done that, it needs to be said that we never tested such a configuration.

Only the very first batch of Lumin L1 1TB had a strict physical thickness limitation for the drive inside. Later hardware revisions accommodate a drive with a higher thickness.

Thanks Peter. I’ll likely give it a shot at some point. Worst case if it doesn’t work I’ll put back the original drive.

Have you guys considered offering a manufacturer supported upgrade path? you might have some 1TB owners interested in more storage.

Lumin L1 Firmware 2.0 adds supports for exFAT. So Mac users no longer have to buy the $19.95 NTFS software in order to use Lumin L1 5TB.

(The 5TB is still shipped as NTFS. Mac users will need to format it as exFAT manually.)

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

I was asked about moving the files from the L1 to a larger drive. Here's the procedure.

Important notice: Disassembly, replacing the L1 internal drive, or following this procedure void warranty.

(If you have enough free space in your computer drive, copy the files from the L1 to the computer first.)

Procedure to move the files L1 to a newer drive as follows:
    - Normally, a brand new internal SATA drive should not have any partition. However, if it is not brand new, or if it is taken from a portable HDD, all partitions need to be deleted using a computer first.
    - Standby the L1 by pressing the power button once so that the red LED is on
    - Unplug the L1 power, disassemble it and take out the original drive
    - Install the new drive. Power on the L1, it should flash red quickly. Hold the power button for 6 seconds or more, until it quickly flashes both blue and red to format the new drive. (Refer to post #1)
    - Wait for the LED to become a stable blue (with network connected). At this point the new drive is properly formatted by the L1. Press the power button once so that it goes into standby with a red LED.
    - Unplug the L1 power, remove the new SATA drive and plug it into a PC SATA port when it was powered down and the power cord unplugged.
    - Power up the PC and you should see a new NTFS partition. You may need to assign a drive letter to it in Windows Disk Management.
    - Copy the music files to the new drive (from the computer backup, or via USB to the L1 with the original drive reinstalled).
    - Shutdown the PC, unplug the power cord, take out the new drive and put it into the L1 again.
    - Power on the L1 with network connected, let it rescan - wait for the green LED to stop blinking.

I know to remove the drive section you need a 12" philips screwdriver. I don't own the L1 anymore so I'm not sure about the other two screwdrivers. I upgraded the drive twice on my L1 with the last one being a 5TB HDD.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

As for using a SSD inside L1, it may probably work, but with the following caveats:

    1. L1 was not designed to support the higher current that may be required by some SSD. If the SSD draws a higher current than a typical HDD, it may be unstable.
    2. Do not use QLC SSD. It will be a really bad idea to run a database (such as L1 internal database) on a QLC.
    3. Do not use DRAM-less SSD. It will be a bad idea to run a database (such as L1 internal database) on a DRAM-less SSD.
    4. Do not use ultra cheap SSD, or a brand that is not reputable. These tend to be unreliable.

I picked up a Samsung 870 EVO to try in a L1. I believe it's TLC with 4GB DRAM. Hopefully will work well. One thing I like about it is the extra read/write life.

Also, if anyone knows the answers/can help with this: I'm going to swing by home depot today to pick up tools to open it up and swap out the drive. I know I need a 12" philips head (but what size?), anything else you can tell me so I grab it while there? Size of the hex wrench (or is that torx?) to open the case, etc?

I couldn’t find the a 12” Philips screw driver locally so I ordered on off Amazon. Message @wklie for the other screw configs. The 12” screwdriver from Amazon had a medium head on it and worked fine. You might want a magnet to magnetize the Philips screw driver when reassembling.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

Project success. Now have a 4TB SSD-based L1. This should last me a while. No spinning platters/read-write heads etc, which I have to think is some advantage.

After disassembly/re-assembly, the process was slightly different than described; I could not format the disk inside the L1 (by holding down the button etc). But it was easy enough with the L1 attached to my laptop -- I just ran disk manager, created and formatted a NTFS volume (partition was already present and disk hardware was seen automatically), and it was then ready to copy music over. Plugged into X1 and immediately recognized, library scanned, up and running.

Thanks to everyone who helped with information.

This may have been caused by the 4TB drive already having a partition in it - this would prevent the L1 built-in format to be invoked.

    Make sure you're running L1 Firmware 3.0.

That's what I figured, so I checked System/Storage/Disks and Volumes where I confirmed the disk was actually seen by the system (inside the L1). After breathing a quick sigh of relief, from there to Disk Management, which confirmed the OS saw the disk and partition. From there it was easy to just create a volume on that partition and off to the races! I was a little worried if the L1 didn't create the partition or volume it wouldn't be able to use it, but that was fortunately not the case.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

There are two recent improvements to L1:
    1. L1 Firmware 3.0 (January 2022) improved its boot up scanning performance and stability, especially for a large drive.
    2. Lumin Android app 4.4.3 improved the automatic detection of L1 library database requiring update.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

Peter (and anyone that might've tried it) - Given that the L1 is UPnP server, could I use it with other devices besides my Lumin that support streaming from UPnP devices?
Does the L1 work if it's connected to a switch upstream of the switch in my listening area?
    Thanks in Advance

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

    1. Yes for music files, because when L1 is connected to the network but with the USB disconnected, L1 becomes a normal UPnP server. I did know of a few people using L1 with competitor streamers, although it is unexpected.

    2. Yes if you only use unmanaged switches. If any of it is a managed switch and you do some VLAN or IGMP setup, it'll be a problem.

I recently purchased a 5TB L1 from Mike and finally got around to reformatting it to exFAT (took less than 30 seconds to accomplish on my Mac) and loading a few albums on it to see how it worked in a non-Lumin player system.

I plugged in the L1 upstream on my network, into a switch that converts to fiber and flows to another switch downstream near my stereo components.

I opened the MControl app I use to stream to my Vitus amp and the Lumin L1 appeared in the Library with Qobuz and my other music apps that MControl supports.

Using the Lumin app, I was able to view the L1 and update the firmware to version 3.0.

I tried to find information on the options for the L1 in the Lumin app but couldn't find answers on the Lumin site.
Can you tell me what "UPnP search" and "Remote Access" options in the app do?

Now that I see how easy it is to use, manage, and load, I will probably get one for my system that has a Lumin A1.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

I’ve been working on correcting tags for the music library stored on my 5TB L1 and have everything pretty close to ideal as far as I can tell. 99% of my library is aiff and art is tagged as folder or Folder dot jpg where it exists.

I’ve done a few revisions to my music library over the past week which included cleaning up tags and adding more music files.

I’m admittedly OCD about my tagging so I’ve returned to my library numerous times as I’ve found things to correct.

One thing I can’t seem to resolve is in the LUMIN app under the folder tab and after selecting “artist” is that the very last artist name by an artist beginning with “z” has always appeared twice with the same 2 albums nested under the duplicate artist names.
No other tab or view seems to show a duplicate that I can see.

Has anyone heard of or resolved this anomaly?

The last thing I tried was resetting the L1 using Peter’s directions posted in a couple of other threads.

Re: Lumin L1 with 4TB or 5TB HDD

One thing I had tested was removing the artist beginning with "Z" to see if it was related to those particular files but the last artist beginning with "W" in the new library exhibited the same behavior.

I have started the hard drive upgrade process on my 2tb Lumin L1. I know the rear panel screws are removed using a T20 but does anyone know the size of the Phillips screws (perhaps #1 or #2) that hold the front panel to the enclosure? Thanks
