Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Hi Marslo
THAT IS NOT THE GOOD ONE.
IT HAS TO BE WW2. That is the dirty little secret and they cost DOUBLE what the 1950s versions do, but still cheap enough. I posted a link to a seller in Arizona who sells them for $88 each. It has to be pre-1946, after that they were not the same (structurally different). I have 1950s version too...I fell into the trap early. LoL
Run, dont walk and thank me later:

I just picked up 2 more for a song...1944 and 1945...to have backups. LoLNORMAN

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
I tested my three rectifiers against each other today.
Output tubes were the psvane WE replica 101.
The Takatsuki 274b blows the other two out of the water with ease. Distant second was the psvane 274b and even further behind the EML 5U4G.
Will be interesting to see whether another recti can surpass this Japanese gem in the future.
I think I' ll keep it...

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
No, not yet. And I am kind of reluctant to spend more on rectis right now.
I am trying to get my hands on a pair of KR242, but haven't got any answer either from Kron nor from Lampi as to whether they can supply some.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Mike, AL will soon get his 2n Dac back with (gen 2, latest firmware update) R2R PCM and DSD, plus PX25 DHTs and the Lampi Kron Recti!
I hear it will be a killer combo!
His HeadDac has Chipless DSD and gen 1 R2R PCM. He will be able to compare the 2 implémentations and give an opinion. Cant wait to hear this.NORMAN

I know this site, but they don't have the 242 listed either.
I also did not get an answer from Eunice at Kron. I tried different email accounts too.
I hope now that Pawel/Lukasz can be helpful.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
What is the difference between the UK and UX socket in the px25? Anyone know? Which would fit with the GG?

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Not sure of the code, but I think its UX. Its the (long) 4 pin config with 2 fat and 2 skinny pins.
"History of tube sockets (primarily in the United States)
The earliest tubes such as the DeForest Audion were manufactured on light bulb machinery and used lamp bases and flying leads. A variety of leads, clips and fittings came into use but it soon became apparent that a base with multiple contacts which the tube could be inserted into was the simplest method of connection. Since tubes consisted entirely of filamentary diodes and triodes, four was as many contacts as was needed and so four pin connectors became the earliest standard. Although several proprietary sockets and tubes were introduced such as the Westinghouse WD11, the first standard basing was the UV four pin base. It had four short nubby pins and a bayonet pin on the side which was for mechanical purposes and was fitted in the socket like a bayonet. Later, the UX base was invented with four long pins in the same spacing and order, so that the tube could simply plug in downwards (assuming the socket was horizontal facing up). This base is still in use on the 811 transmitting tube, the WE 300B and for some industrial and medical electronic uses. Some tubes were designed so they could be used either in the UV or UX ("regular four pin" to us) bases and have both long pins and a side bayonet fixturing pin. UX bases are still made and common. (WE and commercial bayonet sockets had a different orientation of the pin slot. The 300A and 300B are identical except for the orientation of the pin slot so the 300B would fit a certain older WE ERPI unit and sub as a power tube or, with a jumper, a rectifier!-B)"NORMAN

It is the UX socket for it has two thicker and two smaller pins, whereas the UK socket has four pins of the same size.

WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Bill, I LOVE this combo. The Lampi KR5U4G brings out what you would expect from the Lampi EML45 tubes. I could never find the perfect recti for them before. This is it!

We really underestimate the difference tube rolling makes to any audio equipment.
I for one like like my 242 and EML 5u4g setup.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Rumor has it (out of Poland) that the 242 is only suitable with a balanced GG and not the unbalanced version.
Did I understand it correctly that those who tested and liked the 242 did so with a Big 7 not a GG?
Has anyone actually compared the 242 with a px25 in an unbalanced GG?

I have been using the 242's for a few months with my balanced GG. Mike is now trying them in his un-balanced dac......which is supposedly not a good match ?? Fred mentioned to Mike that it may overload the dac ?? Awaiting Mike's opinion ??

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Guys, someone on WBF today asked about DSD 512 on the Lampi...I replied to him with a 242...
Hi, was just listening for a bit at Audiophile Bill's place. We tried the KR45s (which put me to sleep), the WE 101D replicas, and the KR balloon 300bs. We also tried the KR 274b and the 5u4g recti. We also had a Tara Cobalt, a Siltech Ruby double crown lent by a friend (it retails at 18k), and an excellent specially customized Sablon power cord. We also had Tellerium Q's second from the top speaker cable, to compare with the audience 24se.
Trust me, and think Bill will confirm when he comes online, these things made minimal difference. What made the difference was when we put my KR 242 in. Bam. End game. We did a lot of dems on Danse Macabre, and each note had a super grip with the 242s. The attack on each note, the pause, the time intervals, the dynamics swings, were all incredibly enhanced without having to listen for it. The dynamics and bass were superb, with extra cleanliness and resolution, the details in the bass just stood out. Soundstage, immersiveness, throw any term from that audiophile dictionary recently posted, and it was in multiples. The ease of the swing from low to high itself made it musical.
We also heard his Kuzma TT and Triplanar and Lyra Kleos. But over there fluidity in violin aside, the 242 stood out.
This is probably the strongest recommendation I will make since I have been posting about the Lampi. If you have a big 7, forget sending it for a GG upgrade. If you have a GG, forget about the 512 upgrade. First get yourself a 242 pair. If you have the GG, send it back to get it tweaked for a 242. Since Bill replaced his AR Ref 3 and Krell 750 fpbs with the Analog Domain integrated, his gain changed to allow the 242 to play, but we were still getting some distortion on some tracks, while Danse Macabre for whatever reason was playing fine.
10 times out of 10, a Lampi with 242 on PCM will beat a Lampi with other valves on DSD256. Haven't compared the PX25, Elrog or Tak 300b yet, but find it difficult to foresee a bigger jump. But hope that answers your query about 512. You can get it, but doubt that will be the differentiating factor.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
I think that's a blanket statement. Tubes on the Lampi should be matched to the rest of the system. Put 45's on horns and it's delicious. Put 45's on warm speakers, and yes...too much of a good thing.
What speakers did he hear this on?

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
I disagree. I have heard 242s on his Focal Maestro Utopias with Analog Domain integrated 25w SS, on verity audio leonores with Vac 30w 300bs, on excellent sensitive DIY speakers with 300b amp, and I have heard the EML 45s on the verity, the DIY speaker, a DIY horn, and now the KR 45 on the Focals. The 45s have always disappointed me the most. I have also heard the EML 45, but not compared, on the older AG Duos. For me, 242 is one of the highest jumps I have seen in electronics, provided the gain does not cause distortion.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
My second GG came with the 242's, and I have not changed them out with any other tube yet. My first GG/system did get alot of switching out of tubes. I found I liked the 101 D WE copies the best. 300b's were a bit too syrupy for me. My room is heavily carpeted/padded, so I need a brighter detailed tube. So please qualify my opinions with that in mind. The 242's are a very nice tube, for sure. Probably the best all-around tube I've ran across yet. My system could use just a smidge more edge/brightness from the 242......but the soundstage and delicate timbre is there in spades. Just my 2 cents ???

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
First impressions: sounds like it's one notch dialed back from the uber detailed Psvane Replica 101d's. Great separation and imaging. Listening to a familiar tune and depth seems better. I like it. Doesn't seem as fleshy and meaty sounding as the 45 or 300b at first listen though. Very high gain as well.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
No doubt this is a great tube and a must have in the collection of any Lampi owner. But this Lampi KR5U4G recti is making everything sound good to be honest.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
It's a very dynamic tube and when you hear the incredibly fast guitar playing of Paco De Lucia, John McLaughlin, Al Dimeola, you can really hear some incredible separation between the strings. BUT, it lacks the weight and tone of the 45 IMO.

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Ok, 101D replicas were my favorite before. I found this a few notches up in 3 systems I tried, so did Bill in his. Jerry and Marslo too had the 101d replicas as their favorites before the 242. I found it on similar lines - neutral and fast, dynamic, bass and weight, with a few notches higher on each and more refined. You have the Elrog 300bs so those would be different to the KR 300bs, and I haven't heard the Elrogs or the Taks.

WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
I've been going back and forth all night. This KR 242 is indeed a great tube. It has attributes like excellent transients, decay, dynamics, separation and so much more.
Agreed, it's a game changer for Orchestral. Superb!!!
Has anyone compared it to the PX4 or PX25?

Re: WTB EML or KR Audio tubes
Hi Mike,
I have compared it to Px-4. They are very different indeed. The Px-4 is deadly silent tube which yields spooky resolution in my system that exceeds all others. It is weighty like 300b but not quite as rich. The 242 is much more like a supercharged and impressive 101d so they are chalk and cheese. Because Kedar and I like a lot of orchestral, there is simply no tube I have tried that does orchestral like 242. I am hoping the Kr Px25 can compete but bringing even more richness to the mix - will have to hear some soon.
