Re: Kharma Comes To Suncoast Audio

in 2001 i was seeking a more coherent, musical speaker as an alternative to my Wilson WP6.0's. at that point i had never heard or seen any Kharma speaker. but.......i ended up ordering Kharma Exquisite Reference 1D's in March of 2001, then received them in November of 2001. i loved those speakers and they were everything and much more than i ever imagined when i ordered them. how they presented a natural and coherent musical viewpoint established my own sonic compass that i still mostly use today. i met Charles von Oostrom a few times and found him gracious and a genius; every product he designed had that musical rightness. and the finish quality was artful and jewel like.

congrats on adding the Kharma line-up. they deliver the music.

Congrats Mike on picking up the Kharma line. I listened to Kharma at Axpona and was extremely impressed. The DB9-S are beautiful speakers and very reasonably priced. Could you comment on the tweeter? Is that a waveguide around it? What material is the tweeter made out of?

    Thanks,
    Ken

Ken, it’s a Beryllium tweeter, like e.g. Magicos.

    I wonder?
I can’t claim that the Kharma is a tremendous value for the performance offered -- you can get great sound for less money elsewhere. In short, the Elegance dB9-S is not cheap. But its special qualities, sonic and otherwise, appeal to me. The dB9-S ticks off a lot of boxes -- enough that a pair of them might be your ideal ticket to the dance.

In the Soundstage Buyers Guide they summarized them as:

“Kharma’s dB9-S is a real prize in the ultra-high-end-speaker sweepstakes.”

    SoundStageNetwork.com | SoundStage.com - Kharma Elegance dB9-S Loudspeakers

They are a modest sized package, warm, yet detailed, engaging, musical speaker with room filling sound and bass, all the while exuding luxury. For me, I wanted a speaker that was warm and very musical like the Vivid’s and Harbeth’s, but in a more traditional compact form coming in a variety of color options.

We are still trying to expand, but finding the right space is the issue. You also have to understand that we move out the non-performers like Stenheim, T+A and only evaluate items like Estelon. All good products, but we are a business and have to carefully listen to our customers and our gut when it comes to the right mix.

Re: Kharma Comes To Suncoast Audio

I had to stop by Mike's earlier today. I did take the opportunity to listen to the newly arrived and set up Kharma speakers at Suncoast. This is a new speaker line addition at Mike's store and, I must say, its a good one!

I listened to both speakers the S7-S and the DB9-S. While the listening sessions were brief (maybe 20 minutes each), my initial impressions are very positive. I have heard the Kharmas at shows in the past but never in a more controlled setting. The S7-S pair driven by the Boulder 866 and the DB9-S by the Gryphon Essence. I found both speaker models to have a very similar sound signature in that they exhibited a very musical presentation - open, nice stage, nice detail with the right amount of warmth and dynamics. We played Pop, Jazz, Classical, Funk and some Metal Rock. Clearly, the S7-S did not have the punch of the DB9-S but the little guys rock. The DB9-S are definitely a couple of steps up over the 7s.

    Nice addition Mike!

Thanks Mike for sharing your impressions.

To me this sounds very much like the DB9-S with the Boulder 1110/ 1160 would be a great match.

    Mike,

A bit off topic here but could you explain why interesting brands like Stenheim and T+A are not moving in USA? I heard the Stenheim and they we're truly amazing so I doubt its a matter of sound or is it?

Is audio a bit like cars in USA? Are American taste that different from Europe or elsewhere around the globe?

Sure. With T+A it was constant price increases which just made their top level
stuff too expensive. There was also a lot of “T+A, never heard of it”, but I think I was helpful at educating folks on the brand. I am a big fan of the brand, and I had this chat about price increases many times with the owner. He didn’t see it as a problem and I wish them luck as they are all great guys and great products.

With Stenheim, we had it for a year and it wasn’t loved by the folks we demoed it to. Chalk it up to regional differences.

    Hope that clears it up.

LOL. The MBL 101E Mk2’s are arguably the best sounding speakers under $100K. At approximately $70K vs. $40K for the DB9-S, not exactly a fair comparison.

Actually, they are $37,500. Bring a tissue, these Kharma’s will rip your heart out, give you goosebumps and make you tear up. Super emotional sounding speakers.

Apart from being exceptionally good sounding, they also truly live up to their name (Elegance series) in the looks department. A perfect fit for a room or home with a contemporary/modern decor.

Every single person that came into the store this week listened to the Kharma’s. Both pairs were universally loved as in “I want these”. Not one person wasn’t completely enamored and “drawn in”. There was no “not my cup of tea” or “too much money”. Both pairs were LOVED, like people getting up, walking around the speaker, looking them all over and saying “I really really like these.”
