    Vintage in Memphis...

Jim Smith (Get Better Sound) suggested I check in here. A 1975 pair of Large Advents is getting refoamed & Dave Eaton is restoring my Advent 300 receiver. I'm returning to the hobby after years away. Eager to catch up and learn more here.

Welcome to the forum 6sigma, thank you for joining.

I had an Advent 300 receiver. Wonderful piece. Oh, those were the days.

And I think one of my older brothers just re-foamed his own Advent speakers.

    Re: Vintage in Memphis...

Thanks, Joe. I'm looking forward to getting acquainted with the folks and the ways of the Audioshark. Through many years my systems ran the range from the Advent gear up through the KEF, B&W, McIntosh...you get the picture. Now my first move upon returning is to get the Advents singing again. I've currently got a genuine interest in how far the equipment has come and what kind of sound is available at some really attractive prices. Again, many thanks for saying hello.

My pleasure. I just texted my brother. He still has 2 Advent receivers, but they do not work. He will not get rid of them.

    Re: Vintage in Memphis...

Mine was working when I powered it up a couple of nights ago, but I know the caps need replacing and probably a 55-gallon drum of Deoxit will be needed for those slide switches. I'll post a photo or two when I get the speakers and receiver back in a couple of weeks. Dave Eaton's experience and knowledge of the receiver convinced me he was the guy to do the updates.

I'll have to get Dave's contact info from you. Maybe I can convince my brother to send them in.

    Welcome 6sigma!

I have two pairs of the large Advents that were refoamed/recapped a few years ago. I'll sometmes break them out and hook them up stacked to my Sunsui AU-717 integrated. Pretty sweet vintage sound.

Though I've had many "high-end" systems, I've been out of audio in any meaningful way for 20 years. Rather than throw 10-20K at a new system, I'm acting as a beginner again. Getting these vintage items in working order will help me decide (again) about all those audiophile issues - digital v. analog, solid state v. tubes, class D v. class A, streaming v. music server...Y'all know the list!
